[NHL] The Official 2025-2026 NHL Season Thread

Since we can safely say that tonight kicks off the 2025-2026 NHL Season, I thought I'd start a new thread.

Looking forward to seeing what Grier can do with our picks.

LFG!!!

I didn't realize that the hockey draft piggybacked right on the end of the NBA draft, but I guess it makes sense!

No Winterhawks and only one Terrier mocked in the first round which is precisely as many ASU Scumdevils are mocked

5 Terriers drafted through pick 73. All to Boston rivals outside Boumedienne. Not sure who my Bs have picked outside of Hagens who is solid from what I saw in the Beanpot.

It's going to be a lot of fun watching how Michael Misa continues to build on the incredible season he just had (2.06 pts per game) in the OHL. The only thing remotely negative that anyone can think to say about him as a prospect is that maybe he's a little too much like last year's number 1 overall pick Macklin Celebrini in being freakishly good at everything? Neither guy has a "best in their class" shot or puck-handling skills or dominant size or speed but there's certainly a lot of value in playing mistake-free hockey and being a threat to score a goal or set one up every time these guys touch the puck. Misa slots in right away as the leader of the second forward line where I expect him to be joined soon by Igor Chernyshov and Kasper Halttunen.

The Dallas Stars advancing to the Western Conference Finals put that traded first round pick the Sharks picked up all the way down at #30 and most of the first round went as projected with the last remaining "homerun" pick, Lynden Lakovic, going 3 spots earlier to Washington. I was hoping for Malcolm Spence or Blake Fiddler at this spot but Mike Grier continues to make impressive selections in the draft and made a more sensible choice to re-stock some of the goalkeeper depth he traded away this year with a guy I know almost nothing about except that he's very tall and plays with a right-handed glove like Yaroslav Askarov. He makes sense as either a future #2 goalkeeper or a hedge against the still mostly unproven Askarov never solidifying that #1 spot.

In the second round Grier passed on both Malcolm Spence and Blake Fiddler again but drafted similar types of players in Haoxi Wang (a 17 year old big-bodied defenseman with a lot of raw potential) and Cole McKinney (a defensively sound Center / Forward destined for a penalty kill type of role, perhaps in the third line). I'm not sure that the Sharks have a top pairing defenseman in their organization yet, so missing out on Matt Schaefer is a tiny bit disappointing, but I'm happy with all of the players that San Jose did draft this year -- especially Misa -- so it's hardly worth dwelling on. In addition to their own pick, the Sharks are owed a first round pick from Edmonton next year (top 12 protected) and will still be looking for a Left Winger to team up with Celebrini and Smith and a top pairing defenseman or two if they can't fill those spots in free agency. Bring on the 2025-2026 season! I didn't end up going to any games last season, but hopefully I'll make it out to at least one of their 4 regular season matches down in LA (at the Crypt or the Duck Pond) this year.

...Meanwhile, over in the National Hockey League, Toronto gives Vegas Mitch Marner virtually for free. Although, to be perfectly honest with you, I do think Vegas is going to be hurting a bit without Hague.

Sometimes I forget Sharks have a beloved Terrier running the club off the ice too. Mike was part of the NCAA championship club during my junior year.

"Sometimes"??? Hasn't anyone told you around here??? Lyin' ain't allowed, Sir! 🤣🤣🤣
Sometimes its good to forget when beloved players transfer into front office positions. His dad worked for the Pats back then as well and was well regarded until he wasn't. 🤣

Sharks kicked off their preseason campaign with a 3-0 shutout of the Knights yesterday. It don't matter that it's preseason hockey...Any win against those dang Knights feels great!!! :p:p:p

Here's to giving us Sharks fans a lot to look forward to in the future!!!

Alex Nedeljkovic should be kicking himself around a bit right now back in the locker room area...All things considered, a great opening game, but man...That was one that got away. In his defense, however, San Jose should've been able to end it in regulation, but for some strange reason, couldn't find the back of the empty net, and then the Knights score on a prayer.

If what I saw for most of the third and into overtime is what I will be seeing for most of the regular season, I shouldn't really have a whole lot to complain about when it comes to the Sharks. A for effort. D- for execution. It'll be fun to see how this team grows over the span of the regular season.

Is it too much to ask for the Sharks to give me SOMETHING to be excited about?
I don't care what, but at least give me SOMETHING!!!

Askarov looked pretty solid last season but so far this year he's been lit up in both of his starts. That's worrying but the bigger issue is the lack of defenders. This current group of vets is probably going to keep the Sharks at the bottom of the standings and other than Dickinson, there isn't anyone else in the prospect pipeline who projects as top 4.

With Celebrini, Smith, Misa, Eklund and the guys in the AHL right now (Chernyshov, Musty, Halttunen, Bystedt) I think the forward depth should continue to get better but the Sharks need to draft or trade for multiple top 4 level defenders to give their goal keepers a chance.

Macklin Celebrini has a hat trick on 3 shots after 2 periods in New York (Rangers). Finally there's something for Sharks fans to feel good about this season!

Losing to the Lakers will always suck, but at least there was a Celebrini game-winner for the Sharks earlier in the day. San Jose had a two-goal lead in the 4th but the Wild came back to send it to OT. Minnesota controlled the puck for the first 3:40 of the overtime period forcing the Sharks to play without a shift change until Celebrini subbed in for Ekland and almost immediately netted the game-winning goal on a breakaway. This was also Askarov's first win of the season.
