New Question: Why make a move now?

When should the Kings make a move/trade?

I have been reading and thinking about these many different trade options. However, I wonder, with a new coach, would an acceptable offseason consist of:
1) Re-signing Bonzi and,
2) Making another solid draft selection?

Why make a deal now? Why not wait for mid-season to make adjustments? Sure, it would be better to have the team together for most of training camp, but it is going to be really difficult to gauge how each member of the current roster will fit into Mussleman's system. I feel it is inevitable that a trade go down at some point, but is it better to wait and see or act now?

I'd trade now because we already know about some weaknesses. We already know about things that need to be fixed. We know we need a shotblocker and a back up PG. Waiting and seeing with no changes isn't going to change any of that. Why make a move in mid season when you can make one now?

Edit: When I voted I pressed the wrong button.

Trade now. The earlier you plan, the better you come out of the gates. I believe time is essential in establishing chemistry.

We've got a new coach, likely a new system. Since we're going to have to redo that much, it only makes sense to bring in the new players now as well, so everyone's on the same page.

I say a free agent signee and a good draft pick are what we need before we trade players away. If it's not working as well as we'd like it by midseason...then do something a little more bold.

But, then again...I'm a conservative kind of guy...maybe a bold move is what the KIngs need!

If we want to compete for a title we can't do it with the front line we have now. I don't think a #19 pick is going to change things. Some players may not fit into the new system (Miller?), some may be of value to other teams (KT - Bucks, Wizards) and we have a bunch of expiring contracts that are moveable assets.

The MLE will best be used to get a good backup at PG since big men usually command higher figures.

NO MORE MID-SEASON TRADES!!! Unless we suck at that point, but whatever moves this offseason are going to be made before and are of the "we're making a run now" variety if you listen to the Maloofs.

Trades? I don't know what trades will be involved, but we have the LLE, MLE, draft picks, and of course re-signing Bonzi. Those are on the table first, heck, the Kings could even make a deal on draft day! But whatever happens now I look it as adding, Joe Maloof has said specifically they are looking to add this summer, not tear down.

Not much point in kinda/sorta changing things.

If giving the team time to gel was the intention, I doubt we'd be welcoming a new coaching staff. Time to just go for it, make all the changes, start fresh in pre-season and try to win.

We've got a gaping sucking chest wound up front, and anyone with an ounce of acumen knows it. Heck, so do most people without any acumen.

So when you flat out KNOW you've got an issue, got punked out of the playoffs BECAUSE of the issue, are already in the midst of a major rebuild anyway, you make the damn moves NOW, in the offseason, when moves are supposed to be made. This isn't even a question. Barring a complete windfall ala Sheed for scrubs, major midseason moves are usually a variety of failure -- you make them because you basically ****ed up the previous off season and belatedly figured it out. THIS is when you build your team for next year, not on the fly. Unless, of course, you either lack the vision or the guts to make the moves that have to be made.

I'd actually say both. Deals now, and then deal the expiring contracts at the deadline, when they're more valuable. But deal something, because what we have right now isn't good enough.

Which clearly is not the case. Some very, very ballsy moves that last couple of years.

Until the past couple of years, Petrie ALWAYS made his moves in the off-season. I strongly suspect we're going to be returning to that timeframe...

I think Petrie has had to revise his vision, but I do believe he still has one. And I think he's seeing further down the road than we usually give him credit for. At least, I'm sincerely hoping that's the case.

The idea of waiting until mid-year to make changes makes me throw up in my mouth just a little...

You do that a lot, don't you. :D

I just love that line. I should probably credit Slim every time I use it... but there are some occasions where it just seems to fit.

:p

Why? Well, to revise the front-court by adding some athleticism and defense. Little to none there right now. Also to get an upgrade at back-up PG for Mike, which has been needed and has not been filled since 2003/half of 03-04.

I fully expect those to be addressed, as Petrie has already said a couple times in various interviews.

Based on the FA crop and league exceptions, yes. I think at least one trade will be made. Petrie does most of his work through trades anyway.

Other than SAR and to a lesser degree Brad, our FC is full of uncertainity.

The question I have is will it necessarily take a trade to address those issues???

Yes.

Addressing those issues is not signing a bencher, its getting at least one strong rebounder/shotblocker to be a starter. And to truly change things, one strong starter AND an additional bencher might be needed. Chances are very slim you can do that with nothing more than a middling pick and the MLE, especially with a backup PG needed as well. Guys with the skills we are looking for are valued in the league, and for a reason. They cost. Nor is there any reason to sit around wringing our hands about HAVING to make a trade. Hardly woe is us. We've got spare parts and misfit pieces stacked up to our eyeballs. Hell, a trade would be a RELIEF just to clear up all the clutter and bad contracts weighing us down.

yep, it is virtually impossible that the roster from last season will be repeated some prety major changes HAVE to be made.

You make the trade now, because the first trade you should be exploring is KT for whatever. SAR deserves to start and KT's value will only go down once he starts tanking off the bench again. He's also a perfect candidate to not get along with Musselman.

I hate KT's contract, attitude, etc. but there are worse contracts out there. We need to get rid of him but not for an even more crappy contract.

SAR deserves to start if we can get a rebounding Center.

Actually think SAR makes a very good 6th man. He's never won at a starter, and after watching him all year, I'm more convinced than ever that might not be a coincidence. But off the bench a pure scorer who can put up points in a hurry can really thrive, and actually help you rather than just putting up some pretty numbers. A lot of lower level starters don't really make good benchers (see KT) -- they just aren't dynamic enough at any one thing. But Reef had some very good games coming in and basically just doing the thing he does well -- score. Don't worry about the rest. Just score.

Well in part two of the interview with Joe Maloof on SCSRT, he said they (Geoff and his staff) are actively looking around the league for a PG to back up Mike, and for a big shotblocker to protect the paint! YES! He mentioned how we got killed on penetration last year.
