Sounds like a PR gaffe. If McNair was going to replace McClish as part of his reorganization, that's fine. But the Kings should have realized that due to past trauma, Kings fans may freak out about solid people getting released. Probably needed to address his release outside the scope of COVID-19 budget cuts.
