Mike Bibby at Thundervalley

#1
I saw Mike Bibby at Thundervalley at Sat night. Seemed like a nice guy, he was with his boys, I was suprised that noone was swarming him for autographs. He was right in the middle of the Casino talking to a couple guys.

THe reason I am posting this is because of what he was wearing on his wrist. He had on a braclet that looked more like a arm sheath you would see the scorpion king waering in ancient egyptian times. It was almost the length of his forearm and completley encrusted in diamonds. It looked absolutely ridiculous. My buddy and I were talking about it afterwards, and no matter how much money we had we would never adorn something like that on our bodies.

I don't even know why I am posting this really I just thought it was about the stupidest piece of jewelry I have ever seen.

That's funny you mention that, I was watching VH1's Fabulous Life of Billionaires (Mark Cuban was on there, grrr) and they spend their money on some RIDICULOUS stuff! But if you're loaded, why not?!?

My buddy saw him at Golds in Natomas. He did a set, sat around and talked with his buddies for 10 minutes, then did another set. He's an equipment hog. We hate equipment hogs at the gym.

the trolls have left the building..

back on topic, what some people think is gaudy others think are cool.

for instance, i'm probably in a minority in not liking diamonds. some people like bibby apparently think diamonds are really cool.

It's not aboutstyle. It's about showing off how much money that you can waste on a diamond just because you can.

lol i saw bibby in a 07 S600 w/ his son yesterday........... but back on topic if u r loaded..... y not???
Why not?

Because it's completely ostentatious and unnecessary and there are a lot of hungry people in the world who would love to have even one of the diamonds on that ridiculous jewelry so they could feed their family for a year.

Thats why not.

So Mike should give them all his money instead of spending it on expensive stuff? Is that what you're saying?
Yup. That's exactly what I'm saying.

Come on. There's such a thing as social responsibility. Those blessed with the most resources also have the most responsibility to do good. You don't see Bill Gates walking around with diamond grills and jewelry and he's a hell of a lot richer than everyone who wears that crap.

I dunno man. It's his money and he should be able to spend it on whatever legal thing he wants to. It wouldn't bother me. I mean seriously yeah Bill Gates doesn't walk around with all that stuff but you don't see him giving all his money to feed homeless people and such right? He just has it saved up or something.

No, you're right, you don't see Bill Gates giving all his money to feed homeless people.

You could buy a lot of gaudy jewelry with $27 billion dollars. Or you could try to cure AIDS. I guess both are equally admirable...

Well umm I guess you're right about Bill Gates then.

Mike isn't Bill Gates. He has a lot of money but Bill Gates has A LOT more. Would it be a nice thing if he donated most of his money to charities and such? Yeah. But guess what most basketball players don't so are you going to be angry at all of them too?

Nah not angry, but I'm simply saying that I find the notion of "bling" pretty offensive to humanity. I understand why athletes do it though - a lot of them come from no wealth and so when they get it they don't know what to do with it and they want to show it off because they are insecure about it. That's all I'll say on the matter.

No, Bill Gates isn't often out in the casinos rockin' the million dollar bling. Instead, he's spending time in his $140,000,000.00 mansion that's been tricked out with the highest of high tech accessories.

I realize that Bill Gates has donated a tremendous amount of his fortune to various charities and foundations, but don't let the bowl cut fool you into thinking that he doesn't enjoy his money.

Have you seen Bill Gates house? That is his "gaudy armband" it's HUGE and thats an understatement. Bill Gates gives a TON of his money away no doubt, but he uses it just like Bibby, some people just show they have money in different ways.

Also, who says Bibby isn't giving his money to charities etc?

I think most of you have missed the point of my original post. I don't care if he spends his money on jewelry. This thing was freakin ridiculous looking, if he had them on both arms he would have been a blinged out He-Man (for those of you who remember the cartoon). He was dressed in and outfit that looked like it cost 20$ at the swap meet, and a arm sheath that had to of cost close to a mil.

In regards to giving money away to charity, e.g. Bill Gates, the best thing bill gates can do with his money is keep Microsoft as one of the best companies in the world and keep creating jobs so people can create their own wealth.

In college I saw a PBS special where they interview Ted Turner of TNT etc. and TJ (dont remember last name) of sierra microprocessor and Ted Turner gloated about how he gave 1 Billion dollars that year to various charities, TJ came back and blasted him for wasting that money and not using it to create commerce and give people a chance to earn a decent wage. Turner and his liberal agenda got up and left the show in a huff. It was hilarious, because TJ called him a *&%$in idiot on National Television.

Queensfan, thanks - that is a cool link - I didn't realize how much he donated. Pretty impressive!
If you enjoyed that one you might want to track down the much more comprehensive Time Person of the Year issue where they honor Bill and Melinda Gates as well as Bono for their charitable contributions.

The impressive thing about Bill Gates is that the man doesn't just give huge chunks of cash to worthy causes, he makes charity and philanthropy his second job, travelling the world looking for worthy causes, interacting with some of the most destitute people on earth, and studying the issues that need the most attention from the types of people with the resources to address them.

And regarding the notion that "the best thing Bill Gates can do with his money is create jobs" - this is utter BS. Any economist worth his salt will tell you that there are certain things the free market can't account for. Tell me what Microsoft creating jobs in America does towards ending the AIDS epidemic in Africa? Bill Gates seeks out worthy causes and invests heavily in them - these are public goods with massive positive externalities. If the third world countries that Gates supports had properly functioning, non-corrupt, democratic governments, his charity wouldn't be needed, but he is filling the role of entire governments with his contributions to areas that need funding but won't get it from private individuals due the fact that their beneift is spread throughout the population and not accrued to the person financing it.

Anyways, my point is, at least there is some function in having an amazing house. I'm not defending living in excess, and perhaps Bill Gates DOES splurge on things - but I will stand by my point that if Bibby or anyone else has so much money that they can afford to literally waste it on the most absurd crap imaginable, they'd better be doing a hell of a lot for others or else their lifestyle is, IMO, indefensible.

You are, of course, entitled to your opinion, but you're operating within a double standard almost as large as Gates' estate and Mike's bling combined.

There are other possibilities. It might have actually been some kind of joke within Team Dime. You don't know if it was real or cubic zirconia. If it was that ludicrous, I can't help but wonder if it was some kind of joke gift, especially since SATURDAY WAS MIKE'S BIRTHDAY!!!!!

Here would be the distinction, if there is one -- bling is designed to shove your wealth in somebody else's face on completely useless items. Its like a gold plated yacht. Trashy and arrogant.

The world's nicest home, however, is generally yours alone to enjoy (and friends etc.).

There's just something wince worthy with intentionally walking by a janitor who lives in a rent controlled roach-pinfested studio apartment with his wife and two kids, and who was unable to pay for the treatment his mother needed before she passed last year, with a completely impractical gaudy trinket on your arm that would/could completely change his life if he had it and could sell it, and is worth more than he'll earn in 40 years of degrading backbreaking work.
