I think you're overrating Melo a little bit. He's not top 5 in the league, IMO, top 5 in his position maybe. With Favors, they're giving up a top 3 pick (a big at that) without even letting him show what he can do in the court. Harris >>> than Augustin, and at least 1 future first round pick, I think that's too much.

Prokhorov has been looking ot make a spalsh ever since he bought that team, and I think the realization of just how much of second class citizens they are in teh New York area has been setting in. He's basically looking for an anchor tenant. A name player to draw fans and other name players and establish that he's serious. Cost is secondary. Maybe even tertiary.

I agree that this could be a move that would possibly lure big name free agents in the future, but if the team still get more L's than W's, that would also be a negative for attracting FA's and drawing fans. Moreso if Favors proves to be a beast in another team and the future first that they gave produces a future superstar....
It looks like the whole thing rests on whether Carmelo will sign an extension to go to New Jersey, and in the end, how can he not? He can be quite sure that he won't get as much on the free agent market next summer (with the new, or eventual, CBA) than he will now. His two favored destinations (the Knicks and the Bulls) appear out of the question due to being unable (Knicks) or unwilling (Bulls) to meet the Nuggets' trade demands. New Jersey puts him in the NYC market (eventually Brooklyn) and he becomes the centerpiece of an up-and-coming franchise with an owner willing to spend whatever it takes. So the franchise isn't called "the Knicks". So what? If Anthony comes and Prokhorov follows through, the Nets will likely become the #1 NBA franchise in New York, seeing as the Knicks have spent every post-Ewing year trying to pee that title away. Kidd or no, the Nets have never really given them a run for their money, but with Brooklyn, and a new stadium, and Anthony, and a billionaire owner...well, that's a heck of a run. It won't be Amare, it will be 'Melo owning the town. I don't see how he says no.

I really think if the rumors are true that this is a poor deal for the nets. They are giving up way to much in both a top top draft pick(PF/C) and a good point guard for what I consider an allstar caliber player. I can also see this as one of those trades that could look terrible in hindsight. Lets not forget that its not like the nets are going to be contenders this year or next and by then Carmelo might have had enough and will want to leave again like right now, while rookies are stuck for around 7 years to let the city and team grow on them.

I can't see him signing if he doesn't understand CP3 is gonna join him in the not so far future really.
Let's hope he stands his ground and show no fear of loosing money.. it's a 'who blinks first' situation.. if he does that he'll be able to come to the Knicks for the initial offer (AR/Gallo+Curry and 2014 pick)... cause at the end Denver will say 'he's not giving up, we better get something out of this'
