Meeting Day - April 3, 2013

If I'm a NBA owner on that committee I've got to be thinking this is the last chance for Sacramento, but Seattle will eventually get a team sooner than later. NBA needs to support its small-market teams and this would be a great example of doing so.

Well lets face i, Hansen has sent up a BIG message saying "If you want to sell your team for an outrageous price and move it to Seattle call me."

Mastrov just came by to thank us for being here to show our support. #BestInTheWorld

Observation from covering him 5 years: Mayor KJ shows emotion based on the day's developments. Today, he is as jovial as I've ever seen

Aaron Bruski ‏@aaronbruski 14m

KJ acknowledges that California law AB 900 was discussed today. AB 900 is why Sac is on pace for an arena in 2016.

Rob McAllister ‏@Rob_McAllister 2m

The NBA 3.0 may be the key for Sacramento. Making the pitch like that sets the tone that Sac group will do more for NBA as a whole

Brian Windhorst ‏@WindhorstESPN 21m

Considering this looked like a done deal Kings were going to Seattle in Jan., it's says a lot Sacramento has rallied to make it a toss up

Ron Wenig ‏@RonWenig 3m

It's clear Sacramento came in with a plan to wow owners with talk of globalization, NBA 3.0, etc. Their enthusiasm was palpable.

Stern speaking now. You can hear it on @CBSSports1140.

Stern says both teams made excellent presentations. He said the committee has asked for more information in some areas. The committee concluded it is really quite complex.

Chris Daniels asks that with the term sheet Sacramento has been able to come up with, why isn't expansion an option? Stern says it's just not on the table at this point. Daniels keeps trying to tilt Stern into a Seattle response, but DS isn't tumbling. "Sacramento has been a great and supportive market for the NBA with plans for a new and vibrant building." Chris Daniels did not look happy with the answer. ;)

We aren't going to get a final answer today, folks, but I cannot help but feel the tables are leaning our way. Neither Stern nor Adam Silver would make any comment that would indicate they are not seriously considering the Sacramento proposal.

Stern came on.... Lot of questions.. Fact both cities laid everything on the table. BOG committee asking for more information Also when Stern says that it is beyond economics to be considered here... Deposit from Hansen is contingent! shows me that sacramento will keep the team. Keep believing everyone!!!!

Does that mean that there IS an issue with something else, or does it mean that that's no longer an issue?

It means that the offer price is NOT an issue.

Stern earlier had said that the situation was complex and that the committee had many issues to discuss. It's a good sign for Sacramento and the prospective ownership group that their bid to buy the team is not among them.

Thought it was interesting that Leonis was part of the owners group today according to Stern. He was never listed in any of the lists.

That probably helps a little since he and Vivek are pals and he can relay info from Vivek directly to the other owners.

Must...resist... compulsive urge... to check.... Sonics Rising.

oh god...

I promised myself not to do it, but did just for the sake of it.

So, one of them thought it was a HORRIBLE sign that Mastrov was thanking KJ for doing such a great job of organizing and doing the majority of the gruntwork.
Most of them of course saying Hansen's presser was short and sweet, no "fake " hoorahs that KJ was having.

Such a toxic environment, that sonics blog...

I am thinking a MT. Rushmore style statue of KJ and the four whales in front of the new area would be good! :)

Carmichael Dave and I were talking last night about a fountain with four whales. Maybe we can have KJ in front of it holding a basketball, too (and somehow incorporate Mike's hat!).

We saw him leaving the hotel and showed him our signs. He didn't wink or give a thumbs up or anything, but did seem supportive.

Gosh, this is exhausting. Thank goodness KJ is our mayor!

A little downer when Stern said it might go past April 18th/19th meeting. This is nerve-racking. Sounds like arena details and timeline may be crucial.

Per Rob McAllister at the Sac Bee:
Q: What kind of delay will we see if the owners do not make a decision by April 19?

A: It appears the wait will not be long. Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver said in New York Wednesday that the league owners understand this cannot drag on. There are schedules to consider if playing in Sacramento or Seattle, there are sales of season tickets and the securing of corporate sponsors cannot all take place late into summer. A decision will need to be made for the health of the league and fairness to the two cities no more than a few weeks after the April 19 meeting.
I may be hairless before summer.

The one thing I didn't like about Stern's presser is that he said something to the effect that he wouldn't influence too much the other owners.... In my belief Stern is on our side, given his relationship with KJ, our arena efforts and Seattle's lack of political will 5 years ago, and would have liked to have seen him advising the other owners

My feeling is that Stern is always careful to point out how it the decision of the owners. He's been doing it for years. In the end, though, things always seem to happen the way that he wants them to go. I think he's got a lot more pull than he advertises.

Welcome home Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson tomorrow morning at Sacramento International Airport. Please arrive at Terminal A (old terminal) by 11:00 AM as he arrives shortly there after. Wear Crown Downtown shirt.

I can't shake the feeling that the roles are reversed with Sacramento acting like the Big Market (ownership group of four California billionaires, a forward thinking, rockstar mayor and talks of globalization, 21st century modernization in arena models and fan experience and "NBA 3.0") while Seattle is pulling a Small Market routine (Our arena is farther along, we have 44,000 season tickets guaranteed (we swear), you owe it to us after stealing our team)

I smell maloof...
