Mayor Johnson statement after meeting w/ Maloofs

“I appreciate the Maloofs for meeting with me tonight. We had a candid and productive conversation about our mutual goals and interests. I made clear that our community wants the Kings to stay, but we are fully aware that this is ultimately their decision. The Maloofs understand that regardless of what they choose, I will join with other leaders across the region to fight for what’s best for our community. This includes developing a new entertainment and sports complex, with or without the Kings. I fully expect to continue an open, direct and proactive dialogue with the Maloofs as we all move forward.”

KJ does not sound optomistic one bit - in fact, resigned. If Kings move and a new arena somehow by astonishing miracle gets built, we better hope at least an NHL team wants to move to Sac because it will be a money loser big time w/o a major sports franchise tenant. Surely, no NBA team will be allowed anywhere near this pathetic town for decades if Kings bail.

At least not until David Stern's reign as commish, which would be sometime around the second zombie scourge sweeps over Earth, rendering the arena discussion completely moot as everyman fights for their lives.

KJ's response was very canned...and not at all positive. Come April 18, I think those of us who live in Sacramento will be talking about the next great event at Memorial Auditorium we'll be attending!! Stockton has a shiny new arena and sports complex for God's sake, and we can't get squat!!! Greeeeaaatttt.....:(

And realtively poor West Sacramento helped get a beautiful little baseball stadium built, when Sacramento failed. Good grief!

Comparing the costs of Raley Field and the Stockton Arena to a new NBA arena is like comparing buying a car to buying a home. 40 million to 300-450. Not remotely the same thing.

If you'd settle for letting the Kings go and having an 10,000 seat arena like Bakersfield and Stockton - with minor league hockey, arena football, and lots of seats open for Sac St hoops games ... just wait, its probably coming down the road.

If that's not what you want, you are comparing apples to oranges. We have every right to be upset, but if you are going to compare arenas - cost matters.

Maybe West Sac can fund an arena for an NBA team. :)

I doubt West Sac can make the numbers work, but if they could spend 200 million on a project... they would probably try to expand Raley field and get the A's to come here instead of San Jose ... not build an NBA arena.

I am thinking that it is time for for West Sac city officials and Rick Tripp to be in the same room.

There's no way you could expand Railey Field to be anything the size of a moden state-of-the-art MLB stadium.

Why would it be pathetic that the city finally got its act together? Too little too late for the Kings, sure, but why simply throw up your hands and resign yourself to second-class city status forever? No, that would be the pathetic thing to do.

West Sac Population: 44,162
Sacramento Population: 466,676

466,676÷44,162=10.6

Doing some rudimentary (and I mean caveman-esque) math, Sacramento has a population 10.6 times greater than West Sac. Why then, couldn't one compare the costs of a 400 million dollar arena to a 42 million dollar baseball stadium? Per Capita, it's about the same, give or take a few dollars, so lets use another excuse.

Because it NEVER gets its act together in this sorry two-bit town. In mid-late 1980s it was proposed that river waterfront ajacent to Old Sac be redeveloped. Studies were commissioned, Sac city leaders traveled to places like San Antonio with its beautiful River Walk to examine, explore, etc. Now a quarter century later NOTHING has happened - at least on the sad Sac side. However, in West Sacramento (Yolo County) they proceeded to develop that bank of the river and today it's sparkling with many new facilities (parks, condos, boat launches, thriving tourist related businesses, great views).

Now there's TALK again of somehow getting it together among "local leaders" - but like past pathetic decades, it's just more talk at this point. http://www.kcra.com/news/27063874/detail.html

I'll believe it when I see the first shovel in the ground to accomplish something, anything.

Wow. Spike are you just trying to throw out non-sense or do you really think our broke city can fund a 400 million dollar arena without raising taxes on local and simply chooses not to?

Yes, you are right. Every city gets 10 bucks a person to build an arena. West Sac used all of their 40. Stockon could have spent 300 million, but chose to spend only 40. Bakersfield could have spent over 300, and also spent 40. Fresno had almost half a billion dollars at their disposal, but built a modest 10,000 seat arena.

Caveman indeed.

My point stands. Saying "Stockton got an arena done and we can't" is either not looking or the underlying facts or being dishonest.

Actually, Raley Field was built to be expanded later, if need be. I REALLY wish former River Cats Owner Art Savage had lived a few more years, I'm pretty sure he would have been able to bring a new arena to Sacramento...he was just that kind of person, who loved Sacramento enough to bring great things to our area.

Rick Tripp doesn't have any land in West Sac. If Tripp is going to pull off a last second 90 ft. full court heave miracle, it will happen in Rancho Cordova. I still don't think his plan stacks up to much though, and wouldn't be enough to keep the Kings/Maloofs from moving.
