Maybe Kings trade #5 as piece to get a Vet Big

Trading a 5th pic for a stick of chalk like oden, or the only #2pick to ever be sent to the D-league? No thanks. If you trade that pick, you better make damn sure there is not much helpful talent (for the kings) left at on the board that is worth being a #5. If Favors, Cousins or Aminu is gone, then yes, i would trade the #5 to Phoenix in a heart beat for Lopez and/or Dragic. If they go for it, i'd throw in benu (if they would take him). Lopez will be a defensive centerpiece for his team for a long time, and dragic is the perfect backup PG. He does what Tyreke does (get into the lane and either finds guys, makes a decent shot, or goes to the line), just obviously not quite as well...and he makes much less the Udrih.

However, I have a feeling the Cousins will be available at #5, and if thats the case, you have to grab him. From what I can tell, Wiz (Wall), 76ers (trade or Favors), Nets (Turner), Minnesota (Wesley Johnson), Sac (Cousins).

BTW Haywood is a FA. He made $6M last year and is likely to get less next year. Get him for $4-5M.

Taking the assumption that the Kings might want to trade for an experienced player in lue of someone that they might have to wait to develop. And assuming that neither Cousins or Favors is available when we pick at five, then who might they go after?

After going through every teams roster and what their team salaries are for next year, and then also looking for a team that seems locked in to little or no improvement because of salary restrictions. I kept coming back to the same team and the same player. New Orleans and Okafor.

New Orleans team salaries last year added up to 69.5 mil. Which put them into the luxury tax. To make matters worse, their projected salaries for next year is 71 mil. They have one of the best players in the league in Chris Paul but no ability to put enough good players around him to move off dead center. Their probably good enough to make the playoffs if everyone stays healthy, but thats about it.

The three biggest salaries on the team belong to Paul, Peja and Okafor, in that order. I doubt Paul is going anywhere. Peja has one year left on his contract, but at this point, he's amost untradable. That leaves Okafor who is signed for 3 more years and is due 12 mil next year.

So the question is, would you trade our 5th pick and Spencer Hawes, for Okafor and New Orleans 11 pick in the draft? I don't know if they would be willing to do it. And I don't know if they would want Hawes in the deal, if all they're looking for is cap relief. But if they were, would it be a good deal for us?

That's not a bad idea if there is someone there at 11 that Petrie really believes in. It crossed my mind the other day that Peja has about the same $$ left on his contract as Nocioni except Nocioni is spread out over 2 more years. I wonder if they would do a Peja + pick 11 for Nocioni swap. That would get them under the tax line this coming year and would probably save them somewhere in the neighborhood of 10M. We would get the pick and have a large expiring contract to either use at the deadline or let expire for even more cap space in 2011.

Excellent idea. I hadn't thought of that one. We'd have Peja for a year, but then we would be free and clear. It would all depend on how desperate they are for relief. It would certainly be worth a try.

I think it would be a bit complicated - since Peja has an option on the one remaining year of his contract, he can't be traded until he actually picks the option up, and I think that's usually a July 1 thing. And that turns out to be after the draft, so we'd have to have the whole thing set up and waiting to go, with New Orleans picking for us but not consummate the deal until a bit later.

It's actually plausible for the simple reason that it pulls the Hornets under the luxury tax, probably giving them about $5-6M to work with, while only costing us about a net of $700K. But it would take up some of the Hornets' projected cap space in the following year, so I don't know if it's a no-brainer for them. Peja's expiring is a nice expiring. (They may even be able to do better than Nocioni with it.)

From our side, it would probably end any hope of chasing after a big-name free agent (not that that's necessarily a bad thing), and at the same time give us some serious room next offseason (we'd be at about $23M not counting rookies/other players we sign this offseason) and with that #11 pick, if you pull a Xavier Henry or a Paul George...that could be a real winner of an offseason.

I would have to say no. Robin is a solid player, and I actually really like Dragic, but you don't trade a potential star for a couple role players. Favors has too much upside. And he fits perfectly with this team.

Dragic is almost literally a clone of Beno anyway. Watch them both play, and tell me you notice a difference in the way they play. I dont think you can.

I see a fairly noticeable difference. Dragic doesn't play off the ball nearly as well as Beno - I haven't seen him just catch and shoot or stop and pop etc. From my observations Dragic is quicker and tries to get to the rim more on pure speed (as compared to Beno who usually uses a spin move and then finishes). Most of Dragic's shots are also off the dribble in a half court set, so I have yet to assess his ability to just pull up and shoot on a fast break. Dragic is also somewhat more of an annoyance on defence.

thats a pretty good idea to get another lotto pick. we'd be able to get even more capspace next offseason.

Add me to the "No" group. I like the idea of adding youth to our team rather than a player who’s not even close to being that pick.

I rather see Petrie try to swap picks between the 1st – 3rd pick (and I know that's probably not going to happen) rather than giving up a pick to a team that is more than willing to trade their bad players for a young guy who has potential.

Well if your only thinking short term, then your right. But if you thinking long term it could be a very good move. I have no idea what the FO of the Kings mindset is, but I would think its to improve the team as quickly as possible in order to put butts in the seats.

I was thinking the same thing yesterday when Dragic unleashed an exact copy of one of Beno's Slovenian spin moves into the paint,

A lot of similarity in their games. I think Dragic is a more creative passer than Beno, and looks to be a little quicker defender.

^^^You know, as I was typing that post I thought to myself "it seems like I have heard this before."

Next time I will provide an appropriate reference.

I’m not necessarily thinking about short term or not, my frame of mind is..if we can get someone young(ish) and a really positive for the team (to move forward) then I’m all for trading our 5th pick, but I’m not interested in Haywood or Dalembert.

Hopefully this isn’t contradictory, but I would actually like to see us keep the 5th (or like I said before move to a better pick) pick and hopefully get someone who can dominate and grow with our young core. I know that might be hard for some fans to watch and be patient but I think the reward could be much higher.

And you’re right, this all depends on what the front office is thinking, but I personally think we either try to get a better pick or we keep it…I think Geoff and the Maloofs like this road and I don’t think they’re going to change it just yet. But I could be wrong. It’s going to be a interesting draft/summer. I can’t wait.

Dragic is also quicker offensively than Beno. I like the kid. Not only does he show the athleticism and skills you want, but he really competes. The kid doesn't back down.

If we were a team like Memphis, or LAC, or Minny that continually busts on their draft picks I could get behind this idea. But our GM is GEOFF EFFING PETRIE. He's proven to draft gems time after time. You don't trade the #5 pick unless it's a no-brain type deal. I.E. Chris Bosh SnT for #5, Nocioni
