Malone fired

He held on to Roger Craig so tight like he was the last slice of cake on earth. And that was before he became an owner of a major sports team so Craig meant so much more to him then.

Vivek lives to be admired. Like one of those "god king" figures that wants their subjects to worship him. He wants that kind of attention on him.

Vivek is thinking, if this style of play catches on and what I implement works out, oh my oh my. How many worshipers will I have?
Not bad.

The clowns in the front office don't want Karl, a coach who has more wins than our entire franchise...

they want Mullin to go out there and implement their ideas of uptempo gimmick ball and 4 on 5 defense and whatever else this basketball mastermind has up his sleeve

In hindsight, all of these moves speak more towards sabotaging Malone's chances, don't they?

That lineup still had holes, but definitely would have been a tough team to play every night. In that lineup, you have 3 players who could drop 30 points on a given night, meaning there wouldn't be too much of a drop-off when Cousins fell.
It just really got me thinking man. I remember we were all hyped for a Ben/Tyreke backcourt and so was malone. When he was foolishly let go we convinced our selfs it was right cause that's what fans do. But no franchise would let a 23 yr old player who can get you 17-5-5 walk over 2-4 million dollars.

Yup. If Mullin is really hired, then you know it is all due to Vivek's scheme to put in a total rookie who has no plays of his own in order to use him as a puppet.

Vivek probably wants to coach the team himself if he is allowed, ha.

Malone was bashed for giving Nik a chance to win the game as a inexperienced rookie. Seems funny now that Vivek and PDA are trying to change the game with a rookie HC.

As silly as that sounds, I think if they pass on his desperate hat in hand bit, that is exactly the reason for it, and that's really quite remarkable given the complete lack of experience in the front office. Maybe Phil Jackson or Pat Riley can come on down from their offices and flash their fistfuls of rings and say that's not how we do things around here. But for anybody int he current front office to do such a thing is a remarkable display of hubris or naivete.

Especially when you look at the salaries that are paid to other players recently. Gordon Hayward got max or near it, Rubio got more money than Tyreke and a few others as well. Tyreke at $11 mil was a bargain in today's market and you could've easily traded him for assets later if he really doesn't work out with Cousins being the main guy. But our FO chose to just give him away for basically nothing.

The more I think about it, the more it seems probable.

It is very possible now that Vivek went bizerk when he saw Josh Smith have a good game against us and demanded we unload assets to trade for him. Malone argued against it and that was the final straw.

Vivek may be working on getting a new coach and then trade for Josh Smith right after. oh my

Alright, interview just ended. Here are my notes:

Don's golfing in Maui, sounds like he's enjoying retirement.

Not interested in Kings coaching job, chuckle, chuckle.

Would do anything for Pete and Mully, they helped him about 8 years ago and thought they both got a raw deal in Golden State.

Can Mullin be a HC in nba? "Absolutely, got the whole package, been a GM, been in basketball his whole life. Great communicator, players would love to play for him. He'd be a great selection if he wants to do it"

Biggest challenge for rookie HC? - lot of things to have to learn, on the job learning, need to make a lot of decisions instantaneously during a game. Would take him a while to learn. Better to be an assistant for a while before becoming a HC because you learn those things.

He loves the warriors, they are his favorite team. They are playing Nellie ball. Also watches Mavs for Dirk and his son.

Worked for Cuban, who likes to be involved, how would you take that as a coach? "its great to have an owner involved and who cares. Only problem with Cuban was whenhe wanted to make all the decisions. Made it more difficult. Has a personality where he wants to run everything he's involved in. But an involved owner is good."

Ever get to a point where its his way or your way? "yes, a few instances like that. He was behind the bench and wanted to be involved like an assistant coach. That was a little difficult. Some owners dont understand what goes on there, but I dont think your owner sits behind the bench does he?"

4 on 5 cherry picking strategy? "have situations where you can have a player take off after someone shoots, but leaving someone down there? No, thats not going to work on the pro level"

And as he's going off, unprompted he says "you know George Karl would be a great coach down there. He's worked with Pete and he's a perfect selection"

Surprised Kings havent called George? "No, the hard part has been done, there's no hurry in this. You've got a pretty good young team. You've got 2 of the hardest position to fill, filled. A nice PG and a good big man. Won't be long before we're a playoff team.

You know whats I find ****ing absurd?

Vivek can't close on the guy that he wants, a guy he's spent how many years with? Mullin is seriously 'resisting' the job? So they fire Malone with Mullin basically in the front office before they know if he wants to coach or not?
most of the things coming out of the Kings brass lately have been ****ing absurd. They certainly don't know how to go about running an NBA franchise

The irony of it all is, Tyreke's size and skills fit perfectly with this "positionless basketball" we keep hearing about, along with this run and gun mentality. Who gets out on a break and flourishes more in the open court than Tyreke does? Very, very few.
And you DON'T want a scorer like IT to fit that system?

most of the moves they have made have been strange and contradictory to the things they say. We want defense! *trades all defensive players, draft Nik Stauskas*. We want to run! *let IT and Reke walk*

This whole scenario is starting to remind me of Daniel Snyder and his infinite messing with the WA Redskins. You can't turn over practically the whole roster, bring in a coach for a little over a year and expect to make the playoffs. The Kings don't get blown out anymore. In fact they lead a lot in games they have lost. That is a function of keeping the same group together and people knowing what the other guys are going to do, believing in the coach and learning how to win. It takes time in the NBA because even teams with losing records have plenty of talent.

The more I think of what just happened to Malone the crummier I think it is. Blinded sided, low class, and Cousins finds out via some media site. Bad ownership and bad management. Malone deserves better.

It reminds me of one time I worked for a big, famous consulting outfit. We found out that our office was closing the day the movers came to take our furniture.

I think Corbin will coach as long as he is acceptable. The flighty FO could grind that to a halt quickly. I think talks will begin with Karl and he can enter the picture when he wants. My goodness Pete/PDA, the intelligentsia of the NBA are all saying Karl would be great. If you don't value their input, you are screwed up. As happy as I am that you kept the team here and are building something great downtown, you will have burned away all the goodwill that earned you.

We are seeing the problems with a rookie owner, a rookie GM, and a rookie coach. Real difficult and perhaps we shouldn't expect a smooth move upwards. However, I expected a smooth move upwards when we had such great November. How November couldn't be described as anything but great is beyond me.

Then suddenly, as of this afternoon, it could all turn very bad.

Those of you who know Karl better than I (everybody, I presume), tell me his negatives. Seriously. I can think of some humorous negatives but real life negatives.. What I understand is that he is a player's coach. Hasn't had a losing year in a long time. 2 decades? He has already said he would coach the Kings.

There have been miscommunications since this crew took over. It's like one side doesn't know what the other is thinking or doing. I remember several of us pointing out inconsistencies. In this case their actions don't fit with what was available to them.

Exactly this. To tinker with the roster as much as Pete has over the past year and not give Malone a chance to actually coach his team is inexcusable. They may as well have never given him a shot in the first place. Nearly the entire roster Vivek inherited from the Maloofs is gone. Malone spent most of his first season trying to coach a revolving door of acquisitions. I would say that it takes at least 3 seasons to tell if a coach's system is working or not. Unless he outwardly picks fights with your franchise player or shows no improvement 2 years into the job, firing him before that 3 years is up says more about you and what you value than the job the coach was doing. It seems to me these guys want to run the team from the front office and they wouldn't have been happy with any coach that has their own opinions.

Thanks for the write up. I know a lot of people around these parts don't respect Don Nelson but I do. He's a very smart man and believe it or not does know basketball. Not that I want to see this team be the Warriors of old or anything like that of course. It would be a blunder at this point not to at least talk to Karl in some capacity. Hopefully Nellie gets in Mully's ear and tells him to just stick to being the owners butt buddy and let an Karl take the boulder.

An interesting note is this will be the 2nd time Mullin has been at a retirement ceremony in which the owner is booed (The first one being his retirement ceremony with the Warriors)

And then afterwards the fans looked like raging idiots. Especially considering how things turned out. Not that trading a player and coach assassination are the same thing.

Honestly, the only negative that Karl has is that he doesn't have experience actually winning an NBA championship. The guy is an absolute stud of a coach. He one of my top 5 favorite basketball coaches in existence. I remember watching a nuggets training camp episode on nbatv a few years back and being blown away. I sincerely hope that Malone's replacement is Karl. Only good will come of it.

Given Pete's past relationship with Karl and the fact that Karl's offensive style perfectly fits the style that the FO wants, not hiring Karl will be a clear sign that the FO is only looking for a yes man that will be glad to cower in the shadow of a billionaire owner that is thirsty for NBA 3.0
