List of free agents for 2009 and 2010

Well.. according to the radio interview some1 else posted on here. The Maloofs stated they may very well sign 2 veteran free agents. I would imagine signing 2 as opposed to just 1 would be to just fill our rosters for cheap. Could this mean the Maloofs are committed to saving money for the 2010 year where we'll also have more money to deal with? Kenny's expiring plus the money we saved could potentially net us an all-star in 2010.

Every year all the players get raises. In 2010 we'll have all of our current 8 contracts plus the 2009 draft choices under contract. That's 11 players getting raises. Even if the raises are 8% with is average, that a $4M increase in payroll. That's more than half of the money saved by K9's expiring salary. So, your not getting much in Free Agency for the remaining $4M.

But, you don't even have to worry about it because K9 will probably be traded during the 2009 trade deadline when his expiring contract will be the most valuable. If we get anyone of value it will be at the trade deadline. We'll have our core 11 contracts and 2 or 3 short term fillers that we'll add at the beginning of next year. We'll also have (my guess) about $4M in cap space because we won't resign any of our expiring and only offered Veteran minimum contracts to the 2 or 3 players we'll add.

So, at the trade deadline will have K9's contract, 2 or 3 filler contracts & about $4M in cap space to trade for a decent Vet player.

Except Nocionoi. As I recall, his contract was front loaded and actually decreases each year.

Um we kinda have to sign at least a couple of free agents. There's a league minimum on roster size.

Maybe we should hire the Warriors scout that gets all those good developmental players for the minimum? Those guys play better than our starters.

None of these free agents are going to help us in the long term. Lebron, Wade, and Bosh are not coming. Everyone else is either too old or not good enough to lead the team. I think the smart thing to do is to go the way of Portland and Seattle/OKC. Just focus on acquiring as much young talent as possible. By the time we develop our own young players in a few years there'll probably be another generation of star players we can consider.

2009 Restricted FA's

I would go after these youg players with our "slightly more that mid-level" cap space in the following order:

1. Ramon Sessions - PG
2. Ray Felton - PG
3. Marcin Gortat - C
4. Jarrett Jack - PG

These are all skilled you guys (all under 26) who can be had for all or part of this cap space. Of course this depends on what we get in the draft. I think if we fall out of the top two picks (3rd or 4th at worst) we call New Jersey about #'s 11 & 20. This gives you a better choice of the second tier PG's in the draft (ranging 6-16) and some bigs that might slip on draft day. That would probably produce 4 serviceable bench guys (or 3 and a player stashed overseas for later.) Run all these young guys through summer league and keep the best ones around. Trade Beno, KT (or Noch)and a young gun for a veteran or a bigger expiring contract.

PG - Sessions, Ty Lawson
SG - K-mart, (a Vet or D. Green or D. Summers)
SF - Garcia,(a Vet or D. Green or D. Summers)
PF - Thompson, A. Daye
C - Hawes, BJ Mullens

Fill out the roster with salary cap casualties, go into full rebuild mode and get another top pick in next years "potentially" stronger draft. All of this would likely put us where Portland was last year. A.K.A. - Young and tlaneted with some hope for the future. I guess I had more to say about this that I thought. Sorry I strayed off topic.
