[Game] Kings vs Bulls, 12/29/11 Game Thread

The Game Thread Dude
Hey all. Since it seems Piksi is still refusing to grace us with his presences (How dare he? Hum.) I guess I'll have to do some of these one again (Don't expect me doing too many significant game thread posts anymore though because my schedule has tightened up considerably and I would actually rather spend my free time watching the games rather than writing about them- Hey, I never claimed to be a sports journalist.).

---
Well two games into the season we are either the greatest Kings team to grace the court at Broke Fraud Braclet Pavilion since THE team or the worst team to lace them up since the instatement of the 24-second shot clock depending on which game you watched and who you asked about the games.

So which version of the 2011-2012 Sacramento Kings do I think is closer to reality? I think I'd have to lean more towards the first one. Now before you pull out the pitchforks and hand grenades and run me out of town, let me justify myself.

We are a young team full of young, inexperienced talent. Part of being inexperienced is laying the occassional big fat egg such as what we saw in the Rose Garden last night. Ultimately though, there probably aren't going to be too many nights where Marcus Thornton, Tyreke Evans, and Paul Westphal all decide to suck simultaneously.

Considering the fact that our big men were apparently the only players on the team who bothered going to Portland, Westphal's stupid, stupid infatuation with ridiculous smallball lime-ups was infuriating to say the least. Gerald Wallace was able to beat us up by going at the smaller dude defending him, putting an even smaller person on him probably isn't going to work any better.

Lost in all the chaos of the Portland Massacre was the fact that Demarcus Cousins, or My Favorite Monster (nickname trademark pending), continued upon his path of dominance, making people look simply silly on BOTH sides of the court several times in the game. Keep it up big fella.

Tonight we play the Bulls, a team favored by some pundits to win the NBA championship. With Derrick Rose and Rip Hamilton (albeit this is the old sucky version of Rip Hamilton, who would appear to be doing his best to impersonate a naked mole rat with a goatee as seen above) and Ronnie Brewer in the backcourt, it's going to be important for our own backcourt to not completely blow when it comes to pretending to playing defense.

In the frontcourt, Carlos Boozer will continnue to be a better version of Carl Landry, but that's what we got the Chuckwagon for anyways. Demarcus will be matched up against Joakim Noah, who of course will also be taking on a bad hair day as is customary for him (For serious, someone get him a Head & Shoulders commercial already!). As Noah is a good defender, this gives Boogie a good opportunity to work on his moves (and no, I don't mean the Dougie). This is all assuming that he somehow manages to play more than half of the game tonight. Taj Gibson is a nice back up big man but we've got two of those in JJ Hickson and JT.

On the brightside, Loul Deng isn't Gerald Wallace so there's that.

I'd be remiss if I forgot to mention the fact that we've also got another sellout crowd in Arco to support our guys/ bring the thunder.

AWARD TIME

TDM (Tony Delk Memorial Award): GW and Nick Batum sheerly for the fact that they are actually SFs
LW-VC (Luke Walton Vacuum Cleaner Award): No one. Maybe the entire Kings backcourt. Just because.
JHA (Jason Hart Award): Travis Outlaw. Somehow Donte Greene isn't looking all that bad at this point.
SAR (Shareef Abdur-Rahim Award): Isn't Kurt Thomas eligible for the Early Bird special at this point?
MM (Mikki Moore/Minnie Mouse Award): Reke
RA&1 (Rafer Alston And One Award): Isaiah Thomas for exceptional driving into the heart of the opponents defense every freaking time-ness
WTF Moment of the Game: Lack of tall SF in line-up results in GW killing us, which results in us putting in 5'9" Isaiah Thomas to counter the problem.

SPECIAL BONUS AWARD:
Bill Walton Award for Broadcasting Excellence: the entire Portland Trailblazers TV crew. Bravo lads, bravo.

Match-Ups

Reke vs Rose - One of these men may be stupid but the other had to falsify his SATs to get into college.
MT vs Rip - I doubt that that mask is ever going to look cool.
Salmons vs Deng - Passing is overrated anyways
Hayes vs Boozer - Probably only time that Boozer is taller than who he's playing against.
Boogie vs Noah - Let's try to play more than 30 minutes this time, shall we?

Jimmer vs the 3-Pt Line - Did Peja cast a curse of the sharpshooter?
Westphal vs Isaiah Thomas - Can Westphal resist the allure of giving the super small dude a full thirty minutes of playing time?
Me vs Slow Japanese Internet- Will I be able to actually watch the game?
Sacramento vs Anaheim - This stays up until we've built the new arena.

My final Prediction
Kings 97 Bulls 95

GO KINGS!

This could bed a bad one for us, tough matchups, defensive rotations and fastbreak defense will have to be much better than against the blazers. Please do not play a Jimmer, Thomas backourt unless were playing the Lakers. Give garcia a run in the 2nd unit, at worst hes a good defender that can knock down the open 3. Also please stop making random subsitutions, if a guy is hot, leave him in there until he tires, or slows down. Your not gonna get a guy going playing in 4 minute stints. I think we will compete, but will go down in the 4th, if the bulls play good d. prove me wrong kings

Hmmmm. I think it could go either way. Either be a great game for the Kings, or a bad matchup of the other night. If they run some pick and rolls, screens, etc, move the ball, I think your scoreline could be pretty damn close.

If they play small ball and use Fredette and Thomas in again at the same time....Nope.

It could be a complete ****show, though, the back to back to back game schedule has been killing a lot of teams.

Also, side note: has anyone noticed that the refs this season are calling a ton more charges and offensive fouls? Or is it just me?

I understand Chicago has an even tougher defense than Portland. Evans, Thornton and Salmons better have a game plan that works or we're donesville.

Who knows how this game is going to go. Like the Blazers, the Bulls hang their hats on defense so let's hope we come prepared for their defensive pressure this time around and hope that it's not overwhelming when they try to trap our guards outside of the three point line. I expect Deng to be in the post versus Salmons because he has I believe 3 inches on him? Rose vs Tyreke is going to be a goody, I'm hoping Reke doesn't get crossed up this time around. I like Hayes vs Boozer match up and Noah doesn't really concern me as far as offense is concerned. DeMarcus will have to box him out and hustle because Noah is relentless on the glass. If we are going to lose this, let's at least lose it on a close one and not a total collapse, please...

We have to stop looking at individual matchups. This team needs to play as a unit on both sides of the ball.

If the Bulls take the Kings seriously, then the Kings will see another team that doesn't let you have your first option on offense. Will the Kings learn in a couple of days what they hadn't learned against Portland? I doubt it. But hopefully one of these days the light bulb will finally go on.

You have to remeber that most teams have had the same core players for years now. Our core (Cousins, Tyreke, Thornton) have basically played together for 10-15? games, with injuries to tyreke last year. That and our role players are constantly changing. Hopefully this year we have finally found a core of stars and roleplayers that we can keep together for this year, and get a full training camp next year.

Also with having a core group of players set, hopefully Westphal runs an offensive system and sticks with it, the best teams run their offensive sets like human nature, right now we look lost if the first option is taken away.

Matchups (as well as just looking tired) were key to that Portland mess though. When you looked up and down that lineup they had out there, the only defensive weakpoint at all was Aldridge, who just so happened to be guarding our worst offensive player. While if our guards were on their game they could still have scored a lot more than they did, there was no obvious matchup to exploit, and with our weakest starters playign aginst their two main guns, we couldn't put pressure on them to have to defend/get in foul trouble either.

Chicago is a great defensive team and could cause us all sorts of problems again, but overall we matchup better with them personnelwise. Reke is too strong for Rose, Thornton too quick for old Rip, Hayes is a strong stump to play against Boozer's strong stump. Etc. They are a much better team than us and could squish us, but when you look at the matchups there are things you could do this time that weren't obvious in the Portland matchup where we would have been better off with our 6'11"/6'11" Daly/Donte forward pairing than what we had.

This game is at home. This may make a big difference. As clueless as our offense looks, if Marcus and Jimmer had been hitting outside shots, the game against Portland would have been different. There really is such a thing as a team mentality or attitude and when things start to go bad it can spread. Witness our free throw shooting or any team's free throw shooting for that matter. When the first few go in, the next few seem to go in no matter who is shooting it. Whne a few are missed, it sets the tone for future misses.

This was a team meltdown and these things happen even with great teams. I'm not ready to concede this game to Chicago.

I think that's what he's saying, no more trying to exploit matchups only to have it blow up in your face by Westphal. Westphals answer is far to Nelly for me sometimes, at least Nelly knew how to work it though.

hi im new to this forum but am i right in expecting very little from this game...

It's against forum rules for me to point you in any "not-legal" directions, but I think NBA Tv has their free broadband pass, I think (but not positive) they'll show the game, or at least video after the game.

oh i dont meen illegal (unless watching a replay is illegal??) im just going to miss the game and dont want the 2 min one on NBA.com

is there one i can get which you pay for???

NBA League Broadband is paid for! I think they have package/monthly deals for teams or games/month. The program is free until the 8th of january though, so you'll get about a week of audio/video for free :)

Just make a username and you can do it on NBA.com.

I predict an atrocity of a basketball game on the King's Part, Bulls lost to warriors and have had rest due to short travel time. Derrick Rose will absolutely torch any of our guards since the team has not been playing that long together I expect alot of confusion on team defense and pick and roll defense.

I expect boozer to have atleast 20 just from bad pick and roll defense (maybe a horrible matchup where outlaw or salmons is on boozer or something)

Five minutes in and I am already enjoying the Chicago announcing team a thousand times more than the Portland chuckleheads

Former Raptors announcer Chuck Swirsky. You know NBA LP has the Kings announcers on.

Try to listen for the bulls coach yelling "weak! weak!" and the bulls guys yelling "ice ice ice!"
