[Game] Kings vs. Bucks, 4/3/2021, 7pm PST 10pm EST

Supposed elite defender Richaun Holmes has spent the last week getting absolutely destroyed by Jakob Poeltl, Zombie Marc Gasol, and Brook Lopez

“ONE OF THE BEST TWO WAY CENTERS IN THE LEAGUE!”

I like Holmes, but that take is laughable. Dude’s a solid hustle big who likely doesn’t start on a good team.

It will be interesting if Fox continues to play spot SG as much as he did in the first half. He was doing a lot of the standing around bit where the defense plays like 5 feet off of him. I get the fatigue thing but I'm pretty sure it's proven, he's the one behind any success, not the half court system, lol.

He also had like 6 assists and only played half the game. Gasol’s never been a huge stats guy.

He played 28 min, w/5 pts, 6 assists and 5 turnovers. More to the point, I don't think too many people claim Holmes is an "elite" defender against guys 2-3 inches taller who outweigh him by 20-30 lbs, as all three of those guys do. I think Richaun Holmes is not among the Kings' big problems.

21 pts on 10 shots - no free throws - by Jrue Holiday? *That's* absolute destruction.

Yeah, I think this run of going up against some big boys has tired Holmes out a bit as well. He's been a little more flatfooted and slower on the reaction the last few games.

This is certainly a take from the guy who thinks Whiteside is good.

What Gasol did do was pound on him though. Holmes is getting worn down by the size difference during this run. No doubt.

I think the more concerning part of Richaun's play the last week or so has been how every single fundamental skill seems to have completely abandoned him. I don't think he's boxed a guy out in a month.

Most of the good centers in the league are going to outweigh him and be bigger than him though, which is going to be an issue if he completely refuses to play smart, controlled basketball on both sides of the court.

Waltons answer is to answer superior size is bully ball. He wants to get Barnes involved more so the plays they run for him are post ups. But this is now with him at PF. Even Middleton can match him size wise so the advantage is moot. When playing this small the Kings advantage is with speed and finesse, not strength. If Barnes is matched up on a big the advantage is getting around, not through the opposition. Facing back up out of the post up is the move, not to flash down under the rim and seal the defender against a bigger team. Some of the calls man, just make no sense.

He's banging against bigger guys - often much bigger guys, like tonight - on most nights. His minutes have also ticked up over the last few weeks. No, he's not an elite defender, though he'd be more effective if our perimeter guys could stay in front of their men better.

It's harder than it looks when you're doing against players stronger and bigger than you. Holmes is probably in that 225-230 range on his biggest day.

A lot of that is by design though. Holmes and Metu switch onto the guard on most pick/rub situations, which is something smart coaches are absolutely starting to take advantage of.

And, again, he spends so much time hedging against penetration from the perimeter that he often looks out of position.
