Kings to Anaheim? Details on a Proposed Plan

As far as the potential TV problems go, I wonder if the Anaheim franchises could get together and start a sports network.

It's possible but from everything I hear, Fox Sports Prime Ticket, the cable home of the Clippers and Ducks, would just switch over from the Clippers to the new Anaheim NBA team and the Clips would have to find a new home. Here's to hoping that the Clips just move to Anaheim and we keep the status quo.

One problem with all the Anaheim teams being on the same network is that LA and OC are most definitely served by different cable operators and so there would be no reason for Comcast or anyone other operators in LA to carry the Anaheim channel in the basic tier unless the per subscriber costs were very low. Not to mention that Time Warner who serve my mother-in-laws house in OC are the toughest to negotiate with on these sports channel deals. While Comcast often holds out to the last possible minute they eventually cave and events aren't normally blacked out. Time Warner has actually blacked out major sporting events to get the deal they want.

The problem with the Grizz is that it's pretty expensive to get out of their lease right now. When you tack on a relocation fee to the amount it would cost to break the lease, it makes the whole relocation endeavor not pencil out. OTOH, if they are still struggling at the gate in 3 or 4 years, when it becomes a lot cheaper to leave, they will be a relocation candidate.

Same with the Pacers. They have a new, short term lease. If they don't find a long term one in 3 years, they could be on the move as well but I agree with you, the Hornets are the team that needs to go ASAP and then the league needs to make an effort to work it out in Indy and Memphis. The big hurdle is done in those towns as they have first class buildings.

Yeah, I wouldn't figure the Grizzlies to be moving in a year or two, but they're a possible candidate for an eventual move.

The Kings and the Hornets may just be Anaheim's only hope of getting a franchise within the next few years. So that's why I'd be excited if any team came here since their opportunities may be limited. Stern is being a big baby over the whole Hornets leaving thing. Come on Stern, get over it, it didn't work out.

I think it's more that a large percentage of folks just aren't basketball fans. They often can't see, or don't want to see that a new arena and having an NBA team can be beneficial to the region as a whole, not just basketball fans. They have no interest in the sport or the team so they couldn't care less if they leave and they'd actually rather they leave than have their "hard earned tax dollars" pay for an arena they don't figure benefits them. That's the mindset. I can relate because there was a time 10 years ago when I would have had the a similar attitude.

No, you're right. I've never been to Sacramento- only driven through it on trips to Nevada City (love that town sooooo much) and Grass Valley to visit family so I don't don't the exact demographics there. But by reading some of those stupid Sac Bee comments and others I tend to think that Sacramento and the surrounding region have lots of retired aged folks that are basically dead heads and entertainment isn't really a big deal for them. The thought of having tourists and a vibrant downtown just scare the heck out of them. One thing is no new taxes for an arena... I get that... but to actually want the team out is another. I couldn't do business in a place where I'm not wanted by the majority. Another thing I can't stand is that there is a perception by some people that the Maloofs are spoiled playboys and greedy and are bad guys. What got them in big trouble was the timimg of the Palms expansion. If they would of left it alone they would have been in good shape while still owning the beer distributorship. They are not the only Las Vegas casino owners in trouble. Anyways, I really hope something happens regarding a new arena but I have a very bad feeling that theres nothing to beat on that dead horse anymore. :(

. The typical sports fan in OC doesn't care about anything beyond the Angels.

Are you forgetting about the San Diego Chargers?? Orange County is flooded with fans.

There are lot of fans south of Anaheim that would go to the games. An hour drive from the the greater SD area to the Honda center is much quicker than 2 hours going to Staples.

I was wrong thinking the city of Sacramento had civic pride. I've read these comments before and can't understand why a large percentage of folks from Sacramento dislike their own team and its owners & want them out?? If it wasn't a large percentage then the voters would have said YES on a new arena. If the citizens really wanted their team to stay they'd work together. So sad.

When the team is winning, the civic pride is golden...while we suck, and are continually looking for a new arena/home...the NIMBY's are out in full force. All the outlying downtown areas have people that still think Sacramento is a cowtown...a sleepy little city...and always will see it as that, and don't want to listen to ANYTHING that might take a few cents a year out of their pockets. If/When the Kings leave...I'm done with the NBA...case closed.

So if there would be a fan base an hour south of the Honda Center, wouldn't it be more realistic to move them to SD and avoid the territorial thing? I know SD can't get a new stadium for the Chargers, but I'm sure the city would be more inclined to this rather than a $600-700 million stadium??

Not that I WANT the team to move...but I'd rather see them move to SD than Anaheim...so we wouldn't have to put up with that stupid rally monkey that city digs up for their team every time they fall behind...sports in Anaheim has always seemed like just a novelty than anything else to me...but I could be wrong.

The rally monkey is strictly an Angels gimmick.

I don't think they suitable arena, and two NBA teams have already failed there.

Just a reminder, they are THE Sacramento Kings right now. I don't care if you are a Kings fan only and the city means little to you. Much of their identity has been built here in this town by these fans who live here. Many on this board are those people. So stop and think before you do what amounts to pissing on our doorstep and root for what has become a huge part of our lives to walk away to your doorstep. It could happen some day or not at all. But I sure would be a little more respectful of another city's situation like this.

A post after my own heart. Thank you.

A guy called into Grants show yesterday and brought up that he thought 3 teams would be too many for SoCal. Grant said that there is no area in the country like SoCal and that they would easily be able to support 3 basketball teams. He used NY as an example. NY has 3 hockey teams, 2 baseball teams, 2 football teams and 2 basketball teams and it isnt a problem. SoCal is a huge spread out area and would easily absorb another NBA franchise and their new NFL franchise with no problem.

Id bet behind closed doors Grant has already resigned himself to leaving sac in the near future.
