Don't Make Me Use The Bat
Well, a post I made in another thread got me thinking of doing another one of these, and seeing that Ron is about to return tonight, this seems like a good early break point to take statistical stock and compare to what comes after. It is of course very early, and so that disclaimer applies as always. However it applied equally well when I did this last year, and the year before, and yet those numbers were still broadly indicative of the way things were going to go. So here goes, and we'll see how things compare with Artest/Beno/Hawes and Justin all increasingly in the mix from here on out:
Team Stats First 7 Games (w/ league rank)
Points/Gm: 94.3 (22nd in league)
Opp Pts/Gm: 103.4 (27th in league)
Scoring Margin: -9.1 (26th in league)
Field Goal%: .433 (19th in league)
Opp FG%: .477 (27th in league)
3point%: .326 (20th in league)
Opp 3pt%: .383 (23rd in league)
Free Throw%: .841 (2nd in league)
-------------------------------------
Rebs/Gm: 35.4 (30th in league)
Reb Margin: -7.4 (28th in league)
Assists/Gm: 14.4 (30th in league)
Steals/Gm: 7.9 (14th in league)
Blocks/Gm: 3.0 (28th in league)
Turnovers/Gm: 16.4 (14th in league)
Fouls/Gm: 21.9 (13th in league)
Opp Fouls Gm: 25.0 (4th in league)
So, we are last in the league in rebounding, last in assists, 28th in blocks, 27th in Opp FG%...jeesh, looks a lot like last year. Perhaps not surprising given that we have largely the same team as last year. And last year we did two things well: steal the ball, and draw fouls. And this year htose are still our only strenths, although the steals/turnover for us have only been middle of the pack sans Ron.
Individual Notes
1) In a secret to nobody on this board, Kevin Martin is 3rd in the league in scoring at 27.0ppg.
2) In another ill-kept secret, Kevin is leading the NBA in FT attempts by a wide margin, at 12.1 a game. Second is LeBron at 10.8, third is Arenas at 10.0.
3) In what may be less known, Kevin is also 2nd in the league in minutes at 40.9. Here's hoping Ron's return can cut that back a tad. Side note: John Salmons is 18th.
4) Kenny Thomas, Mikki Moore and Shareef Abdur-rahim are making a combined $18.5 million this year. Kevin Garnett is making $23.75mil. See? We got a bargain!
5) We have exactly one player in the Top 100 in rebounding in the league this year (Brad). Cisco is our next best, at #108.
6) John Salmons currently leads the team with 4.0 assists a game (even more sad #2 is Cisco at 2.6). In 2003-04 no fewer than FIVE Kings averaged more than that mark: Vlade, Webb, Brad, Bibby and Christie.
