Kings Sign Bobby Brown

He plans to disorient defenders with his crazy slanted hairstyle.

That's his prerogative!

LOLOLOLOL.........i couldn't stop laughing at this!!! You made my day!!

He also shot .424 and got 2 steals in 6 games. But summer league numbers don't really mean much -- this is a good sign just in that it could/should be a sign that we are going to let Singletary adn Brown battle it out for the backup PG spot, and are going to be content to let young prospects run that position ratehr than signing another hoary old vet to hold it down. That's a good sign for our mentality -- sort of thing tht could cost us some games if/when Beno goes down for a spell, but the way a rebuilding team should be angling. Get young guys out there, see if you can uncover a diamond in the rough.

The old rap on Brown was that he was an amazing athlete, great scorer, but did not think like a PG and could not be bothered to play defense. If those assist totals indicate that he has at least been working on the PG angle (even if the steals might make you wonder if the defense has changed any), there is potential there. The PG stuff is key though -- without it he's just Ronnie Price sans defense. With it he's maybe a legit backup.

All Reggie ever talks about is having the pg score; the pg stuff seems tertiary for him.

Hmmm...not sure about that -- it was Reggie who was complaining the loudest at the beginning of last season about not having a guy who could be a floor general out there, and also Reggie who pointedly ignored Douby in favor of a guy like Anthony Johnson down the stretch. I actually think he has a use for both PG skills and post players -- in many ways having a more traditional approach to the game than Geoff's shooter fetish.

That's a good point. He probably talks about scoring a lot because the pgs we have aren't great scorers, and he'll focus on what they have to improve upon. I don't even think Douby is in the conversation now about pgs, so he doesn't really count. When he was in the conversation last year, Reggie talked about the floor general aspect because Douby was so lousy in that area.

First GP plucks Beno Udrih away from the T-wolves and now Bobby Brown away from the Hornets. Good move Geoff!

Petrie had to do something because of the crappy draft he had.. We let players slip away because he was too afraid to make a move.

I know. He could have moved up and gotten Chalmers perhaps and done a lot more. Heck, he could have taken Richard Hendrix (49th) instead of Ewing Jr. Hopefully, Brown works out if Singletary not ready just yet or totally flops.

Maybe Geoff is going to keep both Bobby and Sean. If they both prove to be able to play at the starting position and be a reliable back-up, then the Kings will trade Beno to a team that desperately needs his services. Does anybody think that’s a possibility? Just a thought.

Singletary is the biggest question mark among the three listed PG's, IMO. He was a second round pick that many thought might not be drafted at all. To think he is going to be starting for the Kings at PG in 08-09 is well, rather laughable at this juncture. He first needs to make the team, then we'll see if he can play in the NBA. Brown is more of a proven commodity and is simply better overall than SS at this time. We'll see just how much better if he also makes the cut out of training camp. Beno Udrih is proven NBA talent and obviously starts, playing a helluva lot of minutes - baring some unexpected event or miracle of miracles.

Sorry I should have been clearer. I wasn’t saying that Sean would be starting, I was talking about him being a back-up while Bobby (since people are so excited about him) becomes the starter (if he can play as a starter). But both have to prove that they can play on the big stage. If they can prove their game, then can (or do you think) Beno will be traded? Or is this a move (adding Bobby) that just gives depth to our PG position?

I like Beno, so maybe I'm biased. I don't think the Kings gave him a max multi-year MLE for nothing. Kings management and Coach Reggie think he can be an excellent PG for this team for several/many years. Reggie said last season that he and Udrih were starting to think as one and he trusted him as the season went on. There's now confidence in him at this point and much less confidence in his two backups - again - if one or both ever make the squad. My prediction is the same. Beno starts in 08-09 and plays a lot of minutes because he's a helluva lot better than what and whoever is behind him on the bench. Going further, I think SS is on the bubble big time and that's why GP went out and got Brown - he saw that Singletary may not be ready for prime time now or ever.

Well don't forget that if Bobby were to play very well we might not be able to keep him. He got the dreaded "2nd year player option" which I am pretty sure means we don't get Bird rights to him.

Since both of them only have 1-year (partially or fully) guaranteed contracts (excluding options), IIRC, I highly doubt we are trading Beno anytime soon. ;)

Edit - didn't read STK's post, he beat me to it.

having 3 young pgs 1 having a little experience the other 2 with potential is way better than having 0. I like the fact they are not signing some 30 year old has been.

Sure. If they both have talent, then of course keep them both. Beno is a good bet to get injured during the season, so you'd have one of the younger guys being a starter and the other the backup. The last thing I'd want to see the Kings have a 12 year pg on their roster.

I think he'll keep all three point guards. As I stated before, Singletery could be a candidate for the D league. If we have an injury, you can call him up. In the meantime he would be playing and getting experience.

Am I right in believing that Petrie has never yet sent a player to the D-league? I can't find any confirmation, but I don't recall any player actually signed to the Kings being sent there.

With Justin Williams, I believe he was playing there unaffiliated when we signed him.

Anybody remember any of this better than me?

No, Petrie hasn't sent a player to the D-League yet. I don't think he likes the fact that Kings' have very little say over how the coaches of the team use the player. The object of sending a player there is to help them learn how to better contribute to your team. If the coach there uses him differnently, then you don't gain anything other than minutes.

Maybe with the Kings now having a team in Reno, he will be more likely to use it.
