Kings Shapiro may be charged with hit run felony

A strange story. It wasn't exactly hit-and-run. It was more "bump and get out of the car and make sure everybody's OK and call it a day when the victim leaves but fail to inform the police". Seems like a really tough one to justify as a felony, whatever the laws on the books say.

The only thing that seems strange to me is that it's really news. I can't make out from the article if it's standard procedure for the reporting officer to "forward and recommend" the law they believe best fits the incident or if it's just the article trying to make it a bigger news story. Would be a shame if he was convicted of a felony over this. Accident happened, he checked on the kid to see if he was alright, hugged him after what we can safely assume was a check to see if he was ok, then left. Shapiro has always seemed like a good guy.

I can't speak to the legalities, but as a mother and grandmother, it concerns me that they just left the little boy to go on. I would have tried to at least reach a parent. Probably should have called the cops, too. This was a little boy, not an adult. If an adult insisted they were fine, I might accept that, but children aren't really mature enough to make that kind of decision about their health.

First, Why is an 11 year old out in a busy area like this alone? The picture is alta arden and fulton. Second, you don't ride your bike in the crosswalk. Your supposed to walk your bike if in the crosswalk.

11 years old....using a crosswalk is pretty darn good imo.

I agree with kennadog...this should be a reminder that we adults need to watch out for children, especially tonight.

Hit and run?
He stopped, got out of the car, realized he wasn't hurt, even gave him a hug. The kid and his friend got back on their bikes and rode off.

Yet, he was hospitalized? Get out of here with this crap...

The mother then says that Shapiro never called to apologize. First off, I'm sure he apologized to the kid if he gave him a damn hug. Second...apparently it was a "hit and run", so Shapiro never had the kids' phone number, so no way of contacting them. And if he DID have his phone number, that means they did exchange information, which in turn means it wasn't a hit and run now was it?

Bicycle Safety Guidelines

Wear a bicycle helmet. It is the law for persons under 18 years of age.
Ride with the traffic flow.
Ride in a straight line.
Ride to the right if you are moving slower than other traffic, unless you are turning left, passing another bicycle or vehicle, or avoiding hazards.
Stop at stop signs and red lights.
Use a light, reflectors and reflective clothing during darkness.
Wear bright clothing during the daytime.
Ride to the right if you are moving slower that other traffic, unless you are turning left, passing another bicycle or vehicle, or avoiding hazards.
Keep a safe distance from parked cars.
Use proper hand signals when turning, stopping or changing lanes.
Use extra caution when it is raining, and allow extra time to stop.
Cross railroad tracks at a right angle.
Walk your bike when using a crosswalk.
Do not wear headphones on both ears while riding.
Keep your bike properly maintained so it is safe.
Do not drink and ride.
Ride defensively.
Use hand signals.
Be alert for road hazards.
Watch for cars at cross streets and driveways.
Obey all traffic signals.
Use lights at night.
Keep your bike in good condition.
Ride in the same direction as the flow of traffic. Keep right where practicable to allow vehicles to pass.
Be aware of parked cars and watch for car doors that may open.

The bolded parts are the main failures for bike riders.

Pedestrians

Pedestrian safety is a serious issue. A pedestrian is a person on foot or who uses a conveyance such as roller skates, skateboard, etc., other than a bicycle. A pedestrian can also be a person with a disability using a tricycle, quadricycle, or wheelchair for transportation.

Pedestrians may have a right of way, but they lose every time with a car. Bicycles are supposed to follow all the traffic laws like every other vehicle. If in the cross walk you should be walking.

I bet if it was the kids mother on the bike instead of the son she would flailed on the ground claiming every bone was broken as soon as she saw it was a Jaguar. I could be wrong but I just have a feeling she might be one of those people.

I don't want to appear cynical, but its hard not to. Ironicly, it would have been in Shapiro's best interest to flag down a police officer to validate that the kid was alright. When I lived in St. Louis a million years ago a similiar incident happened to my wife when she hit a sheet of ice and slid into a boy on a bike. She got out and checked to see that he was alright (she was also a registered nurse), and after determining that he was, they both went their separate ways.

Of course my wife wasn't driving a Jag and didn't work for the Kings. Technically, Shipiro should have had an accident report made out, but on the information we have, it appears that mommy is seeing dollar signs via a lawsuit. I'd love to see the medical report!

I, too, think Mom's seeing dollar signs. But that's another reason Shapiro should have called the cops. The cops could have verified whether the kid was okay or needed a doctor. Its all too bad.

No doubt about it.. just from reading over this lightly its hard not to feel for Shapiro.. Accidentally being involved in a car accident, checking on the boy and to the best of his knowledge the boy was fine physically, and then proceeding to hug him.. Should he have left his contact information or alerted authorities? yes. But allow someone to make a mistake.. and yes it does seem like the mother sees a payday in this.

Technically, the kid is at fault too and should be charged. He was riding his bike not walking.

Who in the world brings charges against an 11 year old kid riding a bicycle? I don't care if he was in the crosswalk. I mean, seriously? Charges?

The hard part with this is that we don't know the demeanor of the kid. When I was 11, if I felt fine I wouldn't have wanted to wait around for the police when I just wanted to be elsewhere. Most 11 year olds I know don't have a lot of patience.

I had a friend back in the 80s (who was 14 at the time), that got a ticket for not stopping at a stop sign on a back street. Most people don't realize that bikes are supposed to follow the same laws as cars.

Yes, I too have gotten a ticket for running a stop sign on my bike. And yes, I knew I wasn't allowed to do it when I did it. There's a big difference between a ticket and bringing charges in an accident. I mean, should this 11 year old kid be sent to Juvy because he rode his bike instead of walking it across a crosswalk?

Some of you in this thread are being too friendly to Shapiro. He hit an 11-year old kid who was riding his bike in a crosswalk and didn't bother to make sure the kids was taken care of. He negligently drove a car, failed to stop, and hit a kid in the crosswalk.

I don't think you can accuse the mom of seeing dollar signs. Any money the kid gets would need to be put in a trust account for the kid until he reaches maturity. The mom is probably more concerned with making sure her kid's medical bills get paid, that he get the care he needs and that Shapiro is held responsible for his negligent driving. It's not uncommon at all for a person to experience onset of pain days or even weeks after a traumatic event.

1) you aren't supposed to ride your bike in a crosswalk.
2) He was good enough to get back on his bike with his friend and ride off like nothing happened.

Medical bills? Jesus...he didn't run him over. If the kid rode off after the accident, it was most likely a love a tap/bump and he tipped over. Happens all the time if you ride your bike in the city.

I don't see the problem with what he did. Everyone makes mistakes and he and the kid are both lucky the kid didn't get hurt. How far was he supposed to follow it? The kid got up, was perfectly fine and rode off with maybe a couple scratches or bruises. I can possibly see calling the parents but what good is it going to do?

"Uhh yeah so I just hit your kid while on his bike. Everything is cool and he is fine. Actually he wants to just leave right now but I wanted to call and make sure you are cool with me hitting him. Oh you aren't? Ok well here's my number, I look forward to hearing from your lawyer".

You think this crap would have happened back in the day? People are just sue happy now and are looking to take other peoples money any way they can get it. If this was a dude in an 89 Corolla, the parents wouldnt give a crap.

I wonder who the kid's mom has as an attorney...

Just sayin'

The article says the attorneys name.

And it's certainly not me, if that's what you're implying.

You're also not supposed to hit people in cross walks.
Something tells me you do not have much medical training. That's not uncommon with trauma.
