Kings/New Orleans proposal

Entity

Hall of Famer
Ok here we go again

Kings out
Kenny Thomas
Andres Nocioni
Beno Udrih

Kings in
Peja Stojakavic
Emeka Okafor

Well the rumor for Okafor early in November was said to be nixed by the kings because of the long term contract of Okafor. No doubt he would sure up our frontcourt. We did NO a favor with Armstrong earlier in the year maybe the owe us I don't know

New Orleans get a big expiring in KT and Noc steps in for Peja and they get a good backup pg for paul.

now if money is our problem with Okafor 5 years 62 mil actually with this year half over its prorated so figure 4 years 53 mil

ok if Beno and Noc were to stay term with us that is 35 mil owed to them.

Peja is expiring next year so that just 15 mil. We saves 20 mil for us. Therefore parlay that into Okafors contract with all the money and we get Okafor for 4 years 33 mil. Which is less than we would pay Beno and Noc for the next 3-4 years.

Note all figures are excluding this years salary. which would actually still be about the same plus or minus 2 mil or so.

Hornets will not deal Okafor. They achieved their goal to be under the luxury tax treshold by dealing Armstrong, D. Brown and B. Brown.

They have no incentive to trade their only real C unless they get better and shed salaries in the process.

I also don't think that Kings will commit any major, long term money to anyone due to the uncertainty of the next CBA.

The last thing any team would want to do is commit to big, long term deals for anyone until they know the framework of the next CBA. Thats why I think we will not take on ony contracts that run past 2011 and won't commit to any long terms deals with FAs until the new CBA is sorted and we know where we stand.

The most realistic option from our perspective is probably Dalembert. His deal expires in the summer of 2011 and he addresses a need.

Not only do I see the Kings not comitting to long term deals, I also don't see many other teams doing so which makes the likes of Nocioni and Beno practically unmoveable.

we are already commited with Beno and Noc. New Orleans is already commited with Okafor. We are trading them to each other. Nobody is taking on a longer contract then what they have. New Orleans does save about 10 mil this year with KT expiring though. We save in the long term with the Peja deal for Noc and Beno. Hell Petrie can do his ole buddy Peja a favor and let him walk and sign with whoever he wants to before his knees and back retire him.

we have absolutely no use for Pedja and he makes a gazillion in the next season

I would take Okafor but not if it takes taking Pedja's contract.

Paying Peja for next year is 20 less than we will pay Noc and Beno if they stay term. If somehow Noc and Beno came off the books next year Peja is still only 2 mil more than thos 2 combined for next year. But like I said Beno is 4 years and Noc is 3 for a combined 35 mil. Peja is just 1 year at 15. The math tells the story.

But why would NO commit to long term money with Beno and Nocioni.

They would save some money with the deal but their team gets significantly worse. They lose the only C that they have and get some bad contracts in Beno and Nocioni at 2 positions where they have plenty of cover.

Beno is of no use to them with CP3 and DC playing really well. Nocioni would be added to a long list of average SF in Posey, Wright and even Mo-Pete.

This deal makes no sense for the Hornets. They receive some bad long term contracts and an expiring for one of their very key players (Okafor) and the bigger expiring thats coming off the books next year.

complete money breakdown

next 3 years
Beno and Noc combined 35 million

next year
Peja 15mil

next 4 years
Okafor 53 mil

coming in 53 + 15 = 68mil
leaving 35 mil 68mil - 35mil = 4 years 33 mil

our expected salary without hilton,May,Udoka for next year is 37.5 take away beno and noc 13.4 mil that is 24.1 mil add Peja 15 mil and Okafor 11.5 that is 50.6 mil in salary for next season with a full lineup

Evans/sergio
Martin/Garcia
Casspi/Greene/Peja
Thompson/Brockman
Okafor/Hawes

in contrast to this years salary which is 63.8 mil

so yeah we spend 33mil more over the next 4 years with Okafor but we also have quality depth in the frontcourt. Then we can draft another big and have time for him to develope and see what things look like when JT and Spencers contracts are up.

They got more money commited to Okafor than they would Noc and Beno about 33mil more. I don't know why that wanted the KT for Okafor deal but they did for a reason. With Paul out maybe they want to start tanking a bit for the draft. They aren't a playoff team and with Okafor gone the get worse and then can get a big in the draft or trade for it. They are in danger of being a few million in the lux tax again next year. this would save them Okafor's contract 11mil and another 2.4 with Peja.. droping them well below. So New Orleans is saving money significantly. they could actually parlay Noc for Beno into an expiring or posey or mo pete. they would have 4 contracts under 7 mil "moveable pieces":D

I'd do it for sure, I think that Okafor would give us that 'rock' down low that we're missing...I wasnt the biggest proponant of it earlier, but I would have no problem with it now due to our ineptitude down low. I would still like to see if we can trade Martin for expirings/prospects/picks though...but maybe that's being a little greedy.

I think Martin would be a summer deal. Try and do a sign and trade of one of the FA or like you said some prospects maybe even a draft day deal. Think about it. Martin and the 6th pick for the #1 pick.... John Wall. Then you can let Sergio's 3 mil qualifying go bye bye and put that to Wall

Wall/Evans/Garcia
Evans/Garcia
Casspi/Greene/Garcia
Thompson/Greene/Brock
Okafor/Hawes/Thompson

then sign some fillers for emergencies..

I'm not sure if I want Wall or not still...I dont think we need an 'AI' type running our team. I say we need to focus on getting another solid veteran...not sure who...but would rather just keep Emeka/Tyreke/Casspi/Greene/Garcia and get another veteran big man, I would LOVE for us to get Camby. Yeah yeah, I know he's 35 going on 50 it seems, but he's still putting up great #'s, and getting a defensive minded big to contribute off our bench with such a young team couldnt hurt. I'd rather keep our pick and take Aldrich if he's there and add to our young core AND our rebounding. Should be VERY interesting how this all pans out...trading deadline in t-minus....

do you wave Pedja after such trade ?

surely, you won't waste kids minutes on a guy that has "no future."

are you going to sit down someone that you are paying 15 million ?

Actually I would. With petries admiration of Peja and the organizations really. i would be a nice jester to release him and let him pick the team he wants to play for to maybe get a ring.

As long as it isnt 'that one team', like Mitch Richmond did in 02'...that killed me to watch him win a ring in 'that' uniform.

More then anything do I want Okafor... I would trade a LOT to get him on this team.

That being said...there is no reason what so ever for us to have Peja here. Maybe if we trade for him next year at the trade deadline to get rid of some pieces that we don't want. But not anytime before then...

They point is not having peja here. I don't want peja. he saves us money and gets rid of 2 players that have longer contracts that we don't need. Peja can be released and go to Orlando for all I care.

I like this idea. Even if we didn't release Peja there would still be a way to get him some minutes for the rest of the year and he becomes very movable next year as an expiring contract. We would be be getting rid of two players that either directly or indirectly were taking minutes away from the young guys and replacing them with one player in Peja. So even if we kept him term there would still be more minutes for the younger players.

The main point isn't Peja and really shouldn't be the deciding factor. Its the aquiring of Okafor and ridding ourselves of two long term contracts. Our frontcourt improves greatly and except for Peja, we get a little younger overall. Lets not forget folks, Peja isn't chopped liver. He's not the player he used to be, but he can still shoot the ball and he's great to have on the court at the end of the game when the other team is fouling to stop the clock. He's still one of the best freethrow shooters in the NBA.
