Kings-Mavericks game thread 11/29

Is the finals appearance all you are basing your opinion of him on? I have to disagree. He's going to screw up any team he touches.

No, I like his intensity, and I think he toughened up a soft team. All a coach can do is get his players in position to win a championship. Avery got them there. Some chokeness and bad reffing were all that stood in the way of the Mavs winning a championship.

He made some really stupid decisions in that Warriors series, but I'm not much worried that he lost the Mavs. They're a bunch of pansies.

I'd rather have an intense coach than someone who doesn't give a crap.

use them for garbage minutes, and they start playing like garbage. GO FIGURE.

if MY morale and hope is destroyed...i'm sure they're none too thrilled either.

And yet, even at the end, Spencer Hawes refused to quit, and blocked a shot, tried for another block and Jason Thompson went to the floor diving for a loose ball.

I guess I'm just way too old because I thought those were the kinds of things a coach hoped for. Instead, Theus sat there looking like a mortician.

I can't agree more. I had actually asked for a ticket package from my husband for a Christmas gift because I was really getting excited about the play of Hawes and Thompson. After the last two games I have withdrawn my request. Don't want to take the chance that the games I would be going to would be the lack luster vets getting primetime minutes and knowing how Reggie is so inconsistant I am bound to spend money I can't afford and end up being very disappointed.

Avery would be the man if you could even get him to come. NBA Finals, 67 win team, you could hire Reggies, Musses and yes, Eddie Jordans for the next 1000 years and never get that stuff.

Weak league, built team, he steps in and takes over and runs things similarly, they succeed. He goes on to coach his way, they fall apart. Avery hasn't proven he can build a team up like the Kings.

And for that matter, say what you will about Flip, but he's been to the Conference Finals something like 4 times now, and missed the playoff maybe three. Maybe he won't get you over the hump, but we are so far form the hump it hasn't shown up on the horizo yet. We just need a pro who's proven he can win once we get good enough to do that again.

Flip, with all his faults, took a team that was stacked to several conference championships where they choked them away. Those were pretty damn talented teams. They could have made the ECF with Stevie Wonder on the sidelines.

Avery didn't get them there. Avery took a playoff team to the playoffs. He hasn't taken a lottery team and done anything. He was an assistant with Nelly, took over Nelly's stacked team and when he started doing things the way he wanted, it fell apart.

The Fire Theus thread was started a LONG time ago. And this thread (Now I am pissed) is being merged into the game discussion thread since it's pretty much in the same vein.

I'm going to continue to lobby for Tom Thibodeau. We need a teacher for the young guys, and Thibodeau is a defensive mastermind.

Musselman was supposedly a defensive mastermind also

I'm tired of all these project coaches

We need someone who is proven and I am willing to take to Avery. At least he will scream straight back at Mikki and Brad.

We've got a thread in the Personnel Moves forum that talks about possible replacement coaches. You guys might want to continue that portion of the discussion there since this thread will be closed and moved to archives before the next game.

:)

No, he took over Nellie's stacked team and made them BETTER. Specifically they started playing defense, which would be welcome in these parts. They were far more serioius customers under Avery's watch than they ever were under Nellie's.

Guys who have coached top teams should never be underestimated. It was the mistake made with Adelman -- people think its easy, but its not something that everybody can do. Avery's Mavs were the best the Mavs ever were. He deserved all the accolades. The legit question is if he is one of those coaches who is doomed to wear on his team. That would make him an appropriate choice for a team alreayd in the hunt looking for an extra kick, but not for a rebuilding team that would need him to last 4-5 years before you could get off a legit shot.

I just dont understand this. How can Theus not see the determination and hustle he gets out of his young players?

Maloofs, PLEASE go give Reggie a mandate that Hawes and Thompson both MUST PLAY 15-19 minutes of the 1st half and Green and Brown MUST get 7-12 minutes in the 1st half. Then figure out how many minutes you have left and dish it out how you want. When Hawes and Thompson are not in the game we have nothing inside as far as defense goes. I like Miller as a player, but not taking Hawes minutes. We simply must get Moore out of there. This is the first time I have EVER SAID THAT. But only after watching this team play when Moore was injured, and now watching them when he has returned have I reached this conclusion. And more because he is taking valuable minutes away from the young players.

Someone said it a few minutes ago. Give them garbage minutes and they play like garbage.

They can not have that same attitude when the game is over as they do when they game is within 4 pts in the 3rd quarter. I know they are professionals, but in the end, players are players and the games are still basketball games, just like when they were playing in college ir even HS. Tough to be super competitive in a non competitive (blow out) game.

I am simply rambling right now I am so pissed.

OMG!

Our fearless courtside reporter is inside the Mavericks locker room, fawning all over Jason Kidd!!!!!

Wow. Just freaking wow... I am done with her. This is NOT what I want to see. I don't give a freaking rat's patoot about how Jason Kidd feels about the chances of the Mavericks, etc. We've fallen so far that we're now reduced to interviewing opponents after they blow us off the freaking court???

That sucks.

You are not alone by any stretch of the imagination. I am beyond frustrated because we have kids who need to learn and develop and they're not being given an atmosphere to learn anything but how to be lose impossible games.

HEART AND HUSTLE - That's what I see from Jason and Spencer every single freaking game and yet it seems as though they get no recognition for that kind of effort.

Once Kevin is healthy, I'm sending an email - or 50 - to the front office, demanding to see a lineup of Udrih, Martin, Garcia, Thompson and Hawes as starters for the rest of the year. If Salmons doesn't like it, tough. If Mikki or Brad have a problem with it, too bad. I also want to see Bobby Brown with major minutes. Our old guys should be coming off the bench - NOT STARTING.

If Reggie Theus can't learn to walk the walk, I'll give him a ride out of town myself. Talk is cheap. I want to see our kids get a fair shot at being the best they can be.

I am not a happy camper - and I'm usually one of the biggest optimists on this board.

so our young guys get to play once the vets get us down by 20 every night. thats one way to do it. FRT

I am also one of the optimists here. I try not to be to negative because I understand where this team is at. Hard to get really upset losing those close games when you look at who our players are(Young).

But what we have seen this last few games is just BS. I have been a supporter of Reggie............ up until right now. If he doesnt get big minutes to the young kids, Ill be sending some emails of my own, as well as jumping on the fire Theus bandwagon that I have absolutely refused to even consider, up until this minute. I think Theus job absolutely should not depend on wins and loses. But he will waste an entire season if these young kids are not playing big minutes. And THAT should get him fired by the halfway point.

Didnt he hear Joe Maloof saying that his Job is basically on the line and they want to see the kids playing????????

hello Reggie, play the kids darn it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Maloofs have said that they want the team winning, and they want the kids on the court. The former isn't really possible, so you think Reggie'd at least do the latter, it's not as if anyone can prevent him from completely succeeding at it.

But no...

Yeah this type of garbage is the reason I don't watch any post game or pre game stuff anymore. Angela Tsai makes me want to duct tape my eyeballs and ears shut.

I'm not sure I at all would have wanted our own players interveiwed after that game, so whatcha gonna do? ;)

Not have a post-game interview? Show reruns of Hangtime? If you had seen the interview, I think you'd better understand my pique. "Our" reporter was literally fawning all over Jason Kidd. It was embarrassing...

Honestly i think by the time Christmas time rolls around things will have changed if these type of games become a regular for us. Whether Reggie is fired or a trade occurs i think something will happen.

Yeah, i really hate her too...i see her reading her lines not just in between camera cuts but even while the camera is looking at her. She is flat out bad. If you gave her each NBA team name, i bet she couldn't give you half the cities that each team is from.

watcha gonna do? we are in a recession

No, he took over Nellie's stacked team and made them BETTER. Specifically they started playing defense, which would be welcome in these parts. They were far more serioius customers under Avery's watch than they ever were under Nellie's.

He had 3 full seasons with the Mavericks. He took over near the end of the 2005 season. He initially got the team to play defense in 2006 (which anybody would seem better after Nelly), and they reached the finals and that was the end of the honeymoon. In 2007, they won 67 games in a weaker west, and got kicked in the first round by the Warriors. After that, the team starts to unravel. There's unrest, players disagree with his methods, Cuban is upset at some of his decisions, they regress to a 51 win season, and get destroyed by the Hornets 4-1 in the finals. 3 years.

Looking at the big picture, and not just one year, it's clear that he took what Nelly had built, and done something with it for his first year. He hasn't proven he can build a team from the lottery. He hasn't proven he can develop youth. He took a team that had won 58 games the season prior, got them to 60 wins and the finals, they lose in the finals, and it's all downhill from there. About half the coaches in the league could have done that, because any coach that takes over from Nelly gets better defensive play. Look at Doc Rivers. He was almost fired, had one of the worst teams in the game, but when he gets a stacked team, they are the best defensive ball club and win a finals, and he's suddenly a great coach.

After reading articles about Avery and some of the stuff that happened, I wouldn't want him in the same state unless he was coaching the Lakers. When one not only alienates players, but causes them to make ultimatums to the boss to be traded or have the coach dumped, you don't want that kind of guy holding the franchise's future in his hands. He hasn't proven anything yet. Reggie Theus is more experienced in rebuilding a lottery franchise than Avery.

No, he didn't deserve the accolades in my viewpoint. He didn't have to do that much because the team was ready for a change at coach and it was already a contender. And the defensive improvement wasn't as great as people here are making it out to be. And he only lasted 3 years before players turned on him and he got fired.

Again, I didn't get to see the game.. but it looks like again that I didn't miss much. Some interesting notes from the box...

1. Down by 8 at the half, 19 after the 3rd?? What is with this team and that flipping 3rd quarter?

2. ***JOHN SALMONS ASSIST COUNTER*** >>John Salmons now has 2 assists in his past 110 minutes of play...

3. Beno was our high scorer with 13, yuck.....

4. ...and he also led our team in Reb, assists and steals...

5. We were 0-15 from 3 point land. :(

6. Mikki had more minutes than JT and Spence.

7. Donte Greene took the 2nd most shots on our team tied with Beno (12), only second to Salmons (13).

8. Jason Terry threw up 21 shots off the bench. Scored 24.

9. Jason Kidd DIDN'T have a triple-double. SWEET. ;)

10. Kings had 2 techs. 1 for Mikki, 1 on def 3-second Vio.. [Note - points didn't come back to bite us this time]

11. Mavs bench: 62 points. Entire Kings team: 78 points. AGAIN- YUCK.

Nothing else looks noteworthy.

thats right, come to the dark side.

This belongs nowhere, but because of the 3pt disparity tonight, I looked up our 3pt% thus far

"no outside shooting" salmons is 43% from downtown
laHawes is coming in at 42%
B52 Bomber @ 39%
While Kmart is shooting 26% before the injury from 3.

Wacky wacky kings...
