You're probably right. I will differ to you when it comes to college basketball, but from what I've seen and read so far, there isn't much to get excited about when picking in the mid-late teens this year. I have no problem with a top 5 pick, because whoever we draft there should be able to step in and help us next year. I don't really see the point in getting even younger than that by taking what could amount to a project later in the 1st round. IMO, aside from our top pick, this team needs to start surrounding its youth with vets(who still have a few years at the top, a Granger/Wallace type), instead of going even younger.
If we had a different coach, and this organization had shown the ability to develop young talent, I might feel differently. Tyreke is getting his time, and so is Cousins. Same as Omri, finally, to a certain extent. But the way in which Westphal/Petrie have developed JT/Donte/Omri(up until a few months ago), by constantly altering their roles and playing times, makes me nervous about drafting someone who isn't ready to step in immediately.
Going into next season, I can see the same type of marketing as we saw this past summer, talking playoffs and "Here We Rise" type stuff. Wins and losses will mean more next year. We will most likely sign at least 2 FA's who can step in and help. I could see it being a mess for a rookie who needs time and patience. We already have one in Whiteside who will need to be developed over the next couple of years, and I'm not confident in this organizations ability to develop more than one youngster at a time going forward. Westphal ahs already shown he would rather bench Cousins for final 16 mins of a game, and play Dally instead, so we can chase our 10th victory of the season. And that is one example of many. What will happen with Donte once Cisco comes back?
Of course getting something for Landry is better than him walking and getting nothing. It will free more time up for JT, and possibly Whiteside. I am waiting to see what Petrie does with our cap space after the new CBA is in play. It's a waiting game, and I'm not crucifying Petrie at this point, and will take a wait and see approach. I'm well aware next summer is when Petire will look to make a splash in FA.
