Pretty big asterisk on that championship given how weird that year was
Asterisk or not, the Lakers are a franchise that builds dynasties. They're not a small market team attempting to hoist just one banner for their fans to remember fondly. NOBODY in LA is going to give a sh*t about LeBron's and Davis's tenure with the team if that lone championship is all they have to show for it whenever Lebron leaves or retires.

Obviously, I have no love for the Lakers, and I'm not exactly LeBron's greatest admirer, but it just seems like such a waste to watch the end of his career on this particular Lakers team.

Pretty simple, actually. They have been paying LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and Russell Westbrook tens of millions of dollars per year. Trading for Westbrook broke the bank. So there is no money to sign anybody really good to help.
"Really good"? That Westbrook signing rendered them incapable of acquiring any players who are any good! The only thing that's gone right for them since they signed Westbrook is Schröder talking himself out of a big contract extension and having to go back to LA with his tail between his legs for a minimum contract.

Thanks, Rob! We love to see it. I love LeBron, but **** the lakers.

They gave up everybody who would have complemented LeBron to acquire Street Clothes™. I mean, I guess it paid off with one championship.
Eh you can’t really knock ‘em for acquiring an MVP level player who got them in a ring year one.

you *can* knock them for giving up on Caruso and Monk for absolutely nothing and opting to go with Westbrook over Buddy. Passing on 3 guys capable of shooting 40% from 3 for the rapidly declining shell of Westbrook whose peak game wouldn’t even have been an ideal with Bron is absurd. And I’m sure there’s worse but that’s 3 Vlade-level errors right there

And to do it all for a season nobody could watch the games.

I mean I'd take it if it was the only Kings trophy in my lifetime but for the Lakers they didn't throw the rest of the decade away to win the covid cup.

Yeah, in hindsight, I appear to have very much underrated Alex Caruso.
