Kings, Jason Thompson agree on new multi-year contract

By the way, J. Jones tweeted that JT's first year salary was around 5.25 mil. I wish they'd make up their minds. Hopefully the Kings will disclose the total terms of the new contract.

No no, we don't do that. That's rude. Far better to have swirling speculation, fussing, squabbling, halftruths, occasional outright lies and anything else rather than just delivering the information straight.

With Jason Thompson officially signing with the Kings, the front office might be able to might have more freedom to make deals. Thompson's cap number for next season is about $5.25 million.

(Aykis Note: With 7.5% max annual raises, that comes out to 5 years, $30.5 million. Ailene Voisin reported yesterday that the 5th year is just $2.5 million guaranteed.)

Great deal. Amazing deal.

I could never understand why "terms of the contract were undisclosed". Isn't it something you would want fans to know about? And won't they find out eventually year-by-year?

The breakdown should be(assuming 7.5% raises) :

Year 1: $5,250,000
Year 2: $5,643,750
Year 3: $6,067,031
Year 4: $6,522,058
Year 5: $7,011,212 ($2.5 million guaranteed)
______________________
Total: $30,494,051

So that's 6.1 million per, 5 year deal - and could be 6.5 million per, 4 year deal (if we don't pick up the 5th year)

Great deal.

That is a great deal and considering what sort of deals are getting thrown around during this free agency period, its a bargain.

Here is another hint in the bee article that the deal is around $30 million

Thompson makes it official – Strong forward Jason Thompson signed his five-year contract that will pay him approximately $30 million.

So with the recent revelations that The Kings could have had Elton Brand for just over $2 million, and can get Scola cheap, how does committing to JT for 5 years, $30-something million sit with some of you guys now?

This was exactly one of the reasons I didn't want JT at that kind of money - he simply isn't as good as many other guys, and giving him that contract (when we know what his ceiling is) takes away the Kings options now and in the future. Now they're stuck with JT.

Does anyone here actually think that JT is a better player than Scola or Brand?

I am fine with signing JT. If I am going to have a guy coming off the bench, I want it to be a guy that will be around when Cousins hits his stride. There is also something to be said for creating a sense of stability to this team. As we drafted TRob, I don't think there was any reason to think we would need anyone else. The criticism is a bit retrospective as the Kings committed to JT before Brand and Scola became available. As a general rule, if we are going to build our team off the castaways of other teams, we might as well fold up and try to get a hockey team to come here. Maybe MLS would want to come here.

I think JT was a great signing and I might still want him over Brand as Brand is on the downside of his career. I don't know that much about Scola and it is all moot. An "I told you so" note adds very little unless chest thumping is that important to you.

WTF?
How does labeling/dismissing anything as an "I told you so" post help or change anything?

I don't, and didn't, think JT is worth what they paid him - not just in money, but in him being on the team - I think someone else could and would do better, and I've been consistent on that for years!

Chest-thumping?!
It happened a few days ago! And it was too early in the process to sign him - EVERYone said we should wait, going back to Jan 20th of this year - that was the whole point of not extending his contract back then!
So the Kings wouldn't have to pay him more than he was worth - so they could wait and see what the competition was going to offer him before they had to pony up their historically-too-high contracts for their backups.

So pointing out how the Kings probably made ANOTHER mistake, in a long line of re-signing mistakes, is now being "retrospective"?
Except this time it was against their own stated plan, to wait to see how things played out.

I'd much rather have other teams veteran, proven "cast-offs" than to cement the "stability" (which I see as FAILURE) for the next 5 years.

The amnesty market doesn't change the free agent market at all. JT was signed to a good contract for a free agent big, and he's a perfect example of an NBA 3rd big who can also give you some center minutes. The amnesty stuff is just random and temproary.

Omar Asik was just signed to an $8mil ayear deal by the Rockets, who then turned around and amnestied Scola off an $8mil a year deal. They are separate markets.
