Press release just issued:

KINGS EXERCISE OPTIONS ON HAWES, THOMPSON, AND GREENE FOR 2010-11 SEASON

SACRAMENTO, CA ---- The Sacramento Kings today exercised the fourth-year option on center Spencer Hawes and third–year options on forwards Jason Thompson and Donté Greene, it was announced by Kings’ President of Basketball Operations Geoff Petrie.

Hawes, currently in his third NBA season, was selected by Sacramento in the first round (10th overall) of the 2007 NBA Draft as an undergraduate out of Washington. He has averaged 8.2 points (.464 FGs, .324 3FGs, .660 FTs), 5.3 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 0.90 blocks per game in 148 games over his first two seasons.

Thompson was selected by the Kings as a senior out of Rider (12th overall) in the 2008 NBA Draft. He averaged 11.1 points (.497 FGs, .692 FTs), 7.4 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game in 82 games in 2008-09, becoming just the second rookie in the Sacramento-era to play in all 82 contests.

Originally selected by Memphis in the first round (28th overall) of the 2008 NBA Draft as an undergraduate out of Syracuse, Greene joined the Kings after being acquired in a trade with Houston last summer. He averaged 3.8 points (.326 FGs, .260 3FGs, .853 FTs) and 1.6 rebounds per game as a rookie in 2008-09.

I'd rather get some consistent and intelligent play from him. Kings are betting on potential but their patience string is getting shorter I'll bet.
I agree. He needs to see meaningful minutes though.

Maturity develops now, but consistency and intelligence develops with meaningful playing time. Hopefully, he will mature enough to earn that PT.

The obvious important one is the last -- should put down the dump Greene fires for a while. If we didn't believe he had a chance, we would simply not have picked up the option year. Happens all the time around the league.

Then again we DID sign Mikki, and Beno to a 5-year deal

Petrie has admitted to making mistakes......

....in the past, sort of. I hope his decision to excercise the option on Greene isn't another one. I know he needs playing time to prove himself, but it looks like the way Omri is playing in the pre season that could cut in on Greene's playing time. He's got to play smarter and it has to start now.

and Garcia and trade for Nocioni and trade for movable parts and draft Hawes and draft Quincy Douby and sign Rahim...I could go on, but whatever.
And draft Martin, and draft Peja, and draft Grant and Smith, and Funderburke, and trade Richmond for Webber, and sign Vlade, and trade for Christie, and draft Williams and then trade him for Bibby. Then he aquired Pollard. Then he signed Jon Barry. Then came Bobby Jackson, and I could go on forever. Then he drafted Evans and Casspi. And before that Thompson and Hawes. I didn't even mention mad max or Jackson, or Bonzi Wells.

Many players have passed through the doors of ARCO. They wern't all sucesses. But to only mention the the failures is not a fair judgement. We see what we want to see. I haven't been that thrilled with the past few years. But I will judge a person on his body of work. By his own admission, he's made mistakes. But he has had a body of sucess. Call it what you will. Luck? Or skill? If he can build another team of the same caliber, then that question will be answered. Until then, don't just have selective memory..

Just an observation - this thread is about Hawes, Thompson and Greene. The never-ending discussion about Geoff Petrie is already underway in a number of other threads.

Oops sorry. My point was that we shouldn't be jumping for joy that Greene got extended because it doesn't necessarily mean he'll turn out ok.

I don't think anyone was jumping for joy. Personaly I wouldn't have been surprised if they hadn't picked up his option. But I can understand doing it. It just gives the Kings more options and the ability to keep him at a relatively low salary if he suddenly explodes into a significant contributer.

If they don't pick up the option he becomes a restricted freeagent next off season and then you run the risk of getting into a bidding war and maybe paying more than your willing to pay, or not, and losing the player.

In truth, its really much ado about nothing, and was to be expected..

The only thing it really does is remove any anxiety the players may have been feeling about whether or not they were going to get their options picked up. With a young team, you really don't want to put any added pressure on them. Their focus needs to be on the game, not on whether they'll have to be looking for a job at the end of the season.

I would have been surprised if they hadn't picked up Donte's option. He's really cheap (right around $1M) and has only had one year to prove himself. Even Douby got his 3rd year option picked up, though his 4th year option was turned down. Every other Kings first-rounder since Peja has gotten all four years, though J-Will, Hedo and Gerald all ended up playing their 4th year elsewhere.

I just picked up on the last 8 years. I was selective to prove a point. However, if I were to choose the good in that time, the list would be very very short. Even your own list included stuff way in the past, or things that have yet turned out.

I've seen some glimmer of hope that Donte may be starting to "get it." PW has acknowledged that he has seen some improvement. He seems to be mostly foregoing the ridiculous chucking jump shots early in the clock of last year. He just seems a little more focused and like maybe he's beginning to pay attention.

He was very young at 19 and he admitted he should have stayed in school at least another year. I doubt it helped to play for Theus or Natt last year. PW seems to have taken on a serious teaching role with this team and seems more calm and in control. His players seem to know what he expects of them. The new coach may be of real benefit to Donte.
