Kings eventually move to Seattle?

I know the arena cal expo deal is far from decided, but if it doesn't work out, there's a very good chance the team moves. I know it's not in the picture short term, but a few years down the road, could you see the Kings moving to Seattle and becoming the new Sonics franchise? They have a better market, a venue that could possibly result in a better lease deal financially, and a city that has a long history of supporting a NBA team.

Edit: why was this moved? This has nothing to do with the new arena at cal expo, it's a discussion based upon the premise that it doesn't happen.

Could be Seattle, San Jose, Anaheim, Kansas City or Las Vegas. I'd put my money on San Jose and Las Vegas.

Even though I doubt the kings move, I'd be ecstatic if they moved to Anaheim. Doubt Stern would like having 3 teams in the greater LA area though. I'm hoping for either the kings or the hornets to move to the honda center.

Seattle has the same problme Sacramento has -- no suitable arena. So until they sack up and address that issue, no, neither the Kings nor anybody else are going to Seattle. They have now done the very thing that would have been so dumb for the Kings to do -- lost the team, and still have to build (or rebuild) an arena. So you have to build the arena anyway, but now without any help from a team or an established main tenant. That's wise.

I really don't see a franchise in LV. It's mainly a tourist town, and with all the other entertainment options, I don't see how they draw the fans unless they have a brothel lottery each game. I also don't see the local population supporting a franchise there.

As for Anaheim, it's a definite possibility, but I don't think 3 teams that close would be a good idea.

Financially, Seattle just seems to work. The city had a horrible lease deal with the team there, and I think a deal could be done to make it financially benefitial for both parties. Not only that, but the Maloofs don't have to buy the damn thing. It's also a bigger market, and I think after several years, the city might welcome a new franchise to remake the Sonics ala the Browns.

Anaheim doesn't have the established fanbase that Seattle has, and by that I mean there's already two teams that grab the attention down there. In Seattle, they have a long history of fans that don't have a team anymore. There's no NBA competition.

With that being said, I think Memphis might be another option to move there and become the Sonics. I just don't see a city like Seattle not have a team and a city like Charlotte try to get a new franchise right away once the hornets left.

I think the city of Seattle made it clear who they would like to stay when the Mariners and Seahawks built their comfy homes with retractable roofs...

I really can't see Seattle. Las Vegas or Anaheim would seem to be better possibilities.

I doubt it. They wouldnt have 3 NBA teams in the same metro area. Also, Vegas having a pro team would ruin sports. No need to even state all of the problems with having a team there.

I saw that someone brought up Kansas City.... Kansas City has the new Sprint Center and Omaha has the newer Qwest Center (Missouri Valley school, Creighton, even gets 20,000 fans a night, which is more than most 'BCS' schools) but they wouldnt move a team from there and bring it back. That would be just stupid.

Yeah, what kind of weirdo would do that?

Davis was promised a new stadium when he moved the raiders to LA but city or county never kept its promise so the angered Al Davis moved the team back to Oakland. With the new stadium being planned in LA, don't be shocked if the raiders return to LA once again.

All I know is about KC is that the arena is amazing and whatever team will have a sweetheart deal with it. The team will be part owner in the arena they get to keep all the revenue from their games and for all non-game events like concerts, family shows, etc they will get 50% of that revenue with AEG.

I really don't want the Kings to leave, we arn't to the point the Sonics were at, but we are getting there.....PLEASE PLEASE BILLIONAIRES MAKE A NEW ARENA!

Ah, good. The annual TDOS "the sky is falling" Kings are going to move thread. Somehow it just doesn't seem like summer without it.

People really need to quit jumping off the cliff every time something like this hits the press. The "teaser" by one of the local "news" broadcasters when the Seattle story hit the wire was irresponsible journalism at its very best.

Let's wait and see what happens with CalExpo before we continue the lemming-like march to the sea.

This thread wasn't about "Oh NOES! Kings are teh bye BYES!"

I was just discussing that if they leave town, would Seattle be a frontrunner for a new location. That's all.

And I'm simply remarking the same kind of thread - more or less - has been a part of every off-season since 2003/2004. It's just a tradition. No offense was meant about you starting the thread. Sorry if I expressed it too strongly. It was partially in response to the teaser "Seattle has lost its NBA team. Will Sacramento be next?" that I was really objecting to more than anything else.

:)

People seem to be forgetting the problem with markets sharing pro franchises. KC has the Chiefs and the Royals. Who wants to the the 3rd fish in a small pond? Same thing applies to Seattle but a bit larger market - 3rd fish in the pond still and no arena. The other factors are slowly changing too. Where Vegas seemed to be a booming town not long ago, they are now hitting a downturn that seems to be gaining momentum. The OC really is a separate market from LA. They have the people and the money. The problem is that they also have the NHL and the owner who wants to own an NBA team in the Honda Center. The Maloofs and Ducks owner Henry Samueli kind of have the same idea to own two pro teams and have the clout to keep the city of Anaheim feeding money into the Honda Center. By the way, that building is 15 years old now. I suppose they both could share the building, but I doubt it would be the ideal situation. The Maloofs have the best possible deal if they can run the arena and profit on all the booking dates and not just NBA games. There is also the TV market to consider too.

It's not going to happen.. ;)

I would love to see Sacramento get a football team though.. I am sure Sac fans would sell out a football team for years and years. Or even Baseball. I know watching the Rivercats is almost as good as watching the A's (since it's such a good farm program). Sacramento deserves a Major League team after showing the support we have for our minor league team all these years and setting attendance record after record.

So No to the Kings moving, and yes to a baseball, or football team! :D

While I think both are unlikely, it's a better possibility that Sac would get a baseball team before a football team (especially with the NFL still out of LA). But a baseball team seems more probable taking into account the annual attendance numbers for the River Cats.

Then again, considering how difficult it is to get a new arena for the team the city already has, I have a tough time seeing a new stadium for a team not even in the city going any better.
