Kings Defense Finally top 10

#1
The Kings, even with that horrible defensive effort against the lakers, have finally moved into the top 10 (10th) defensive teams according to the overall defense stat at NBA.com(Bpg,steals,rebounds). Interesting to see their rebounding differential go from almost -7 a game down to -2.6 hope the trend keeps up. Mike and Brad have really been going after the ball and shown a real commitment to helping the team get better at rebounding.

I looked at those stats we are getting outrebounded by -2, out blocked by .8 and stolen by .2. Thats about 20 teams outdefending/outplaying us in those areas.

The real defensive stat would be opp fg% which we are 16th which makes puts us in the middle.

I'm confused... Would you post a link to where you found the information that puts the Kings in the top 3rd in defense? It just sounds way too good to be true.

I think the team is succcessfully slowing down the game and getting more rebounds, this translates inot fewer points alowed, and a less embarassing rebound rate. Lets see it this can contenue to improve.

You guys have it wrong. When you load the page, the RPG/HME column is highlighted showing on which stat the teams are ranked. The Kings have the 10th best RPG. Click the column header to see how they are ranked in the other stat solumns.

Pretty bleak.

Okay, so the Kings are (reading the categories from left to right):

Rebounds (-2.68) -- 27th best in difference over opponents
Blocks (-0.86) -- 23rd best in difference over opponents
Steals (-0.18) -- 16th best in difference over opponents

That's not very impressive...

:(

Well hey..... that means there are 3 teams worse in rebounding, 7 in blocks, and 14 teams worse in steals....

Could be worse:p

Ohhh ok.. I didn't see the page before... Not really impressive, I agree. But I believe they'll get better. (trying to keep the optimism!) Go Kings!

In the big granddaddy defensive stat of them all -- Def FG% (i.e. basically how hard it is to shoot against you) we remain a middling team:

.441, good for 15th in the league.

The devil is in the details for us:

Opposing 3pt FG% = .355 (22nd)
Turnovers Forced = 14.0 (22nd)
Rebound % = .484 (t26th)
Steals = 7.4 (20th)
Blocks = 4.0 (26th)

We do not have a single player averaging 1 block a game. All 5 of our starters average at least 1 stl a game. But none is better than Bibby's very modest 1.36, and nobody off the bench even averages 1/2 a steal a game.

Numerous other elite teams are weak in one or more of the above areas (for instance the Suns rebound as poorly as we do, Minnesota is 29th in the league in steals etc.), but it is our consitent mediocrity/suckiness across the board which is troubling. There is not a single thing we do on the defensive side of the ball better than average. Nothing to hang our hat on. We lack the athleticism to harass and disrupt teams on the perimeter, and the verticality inside to block and alter shots once teams drive the middle. Our rebounding is improving a little, and we may still have the personnel to improve from within on that front and become a solid boarding team. Otherwise...not many defensive answers on this roster.

Rebounding

Whoops misread the stat. My bad, but the reason I posted the stat was primarily to show our improving rebounding, which I think we all agreed is at least one of the major problems the Kings were having. I followed the differential since the beginning of the season and it was as bad as -6.9. I was trying to compare them to themselves, as oppose to the rest of the league. But Brick is right opp fg% we are 15th. Middle of the pack opp fg% is pretty good, considering we were as bad as 26th in that stat earlier. It's all gotta get better, but rebounding and opp fg% are key for us, those are the stats I'll be watching.
