Would you prefer him jump on the first few offers even if we get screwed? People (not specifically you) are starting to sound ready to make trades just to make trades and in a few months those same people will dissect and complain how the trade was awful.
Getting “screwed” is perhaps in the eye of the beholder. People (in general, but not necessarily you specifically) seem to pile on Morey for ridiculous demands, but who’s to say McNair isn’t being equally stubborn? As others have pointed out, there is a difference between value and price. Perhaps the value of our pieces are a lot lower than Monty has established in his mind (as crazy as that sounds given our recent state of play). Yes, he could wait to win a trade on paper (or in his mind based on his perceived asset value), but that day may never come and we’ll be left with our current poo poo platter.
I feel like the main issue is that we seem to be a terrible team looking to make our terrible team better for a push for the playoffs this year. That just usually doesn’t happen. In the current NBA, you usually see (1) bad team sell players for picks, (2) good teams buy players for picks, (3) bad team absorb contracts for picks, (4) good team sell bad contacts with picks. Rarely do you see (5) bad team sell player to another bad team for player, and probably even more rare do you see (6) bad team sell player to good team for a player. Why? Because all trading partners each want to “win” the trade. When trading a player for another player, it used to come down to who’s better in the eye of the beholder… I think your 20 ppg scorer is more valuable than my 10 rpg defensive big. However, now that there are advanced statistical metrics that make it easier to normalize and assess the relative contributions to winning that two different types of players may have, it’s much tougher to rely on the eye of the beholder argument to valuing the trade winner. To fill those gaps, value through draft picks or salary dump is needed.
So, long winded way of saying, I doubt McNair will ever get to a winning trade if the goal is to (1) find a team to dump our players (that currently contribute to losing basketball), to get (2) a player good enough to make our team better without (3) giving up enough draft capital that would be required to make our trading partner happy. We can keep waiting for that to happen, change our stated objectives for making the playoffs this year, or make a trade that likely results in us “losing”.
