When you make your pick, please include a write-up on why you're picking a certain player and what you think he'll do for your team. Also, please send a PM to the person picking after you once you've posted your selection. There isn't a time limit per se but I reserve the right to bring in a substitute should you not make your pick within a reasonable period of time (allowing, of course, for our overseas participants who might be asleep when their turn comes around).

This is the first mock draft I've run so here's hoping it goes smoothly and you all HAVE FUN!

You're not up for a bit, so hopefully you won't have any problems when it's your turn. :)

Let's roll!

I thought I was gonna pick late. I am humbled to have this chance to finally decide the first pick a Kingsfans.com mock.

So here goes the dice.

With first pick of KingsFans NBA 2013 mock draft, the Cleveland Cavaliers select:

Alex Len from Maryland

nerlens-len.jpg

That game against Noel(Kentucky) sealed the deal for this pick.
Len is a can't miss talent and with that size, Len will definitely help the Cavs jump back into the playoffs.
Although, the kid is compared to Big Z. I think Len will definitely start his NBA career much more effective than Z.
Inspired by Miami's roster weakness which is at PG and C, the Cavs already with Kyrie will now ensure that we will be competitive against Lebron's team by adding a legit big man.
We still keep that SF spot open in case Bron2x is interested to come back. :D

And with this pick, me as the Cav's GM is now opening for any trade offers for Varejao plus our other fist round pick for a veteran SF to complement Kyrie, Dion, Alex, and Tristan.

I'm not really sure about allowing trades. We don't have a lot of time to get this draft done before Thursday, and quite frankly, I don't have the time to keep track of trades, revised draft picks, etc. Let's just keep it simple this year and maybe think about allowing trades for next year's mock.

After much deliberation and a near backroom brawl between FO personnel due to conflicting theories on how to build a team, one side wanting the BPA with the highest ceiling and the other wanting a potential game changing big who they can build around who might not have as high a ceiling as the BPA route, the Orlando Magic surprise many of the self proclaimed "draft experts" and pick

Nerlens Noel, from Kentucky with the 2nd overall pick.

Many in the FO wanted McLemore, due to his high ceiling and potential star level talent. But given the belief Noel also has an extremely high ceiling, is more NBA ready and a potential dominant big is more valuable than a potential dominant SG, who can not only control games defensively but has the talent and potential to be an effective low post option who the offense can be run through at some point, banking on improved development down low on the box, common sense prevailed after seeing what a guy like Hibbert has meant to the Pacers and Orlando finally took the step to hopefully replace Dwight Howard, the prima donna who previously roamed the paint in this beautiful, mid-Florida city. And when your roster doesn't have much talent and you're basically building from scratch, a big man was what Orlando felt more comfortable with as the foundation going going forward.

Due to the shake-up at the top of the draft, the Wizards also have a near backroom brawl. The Wizards have been expecting Otto Porter to fall to them, and indeed he is there. Never did they imagine that Ben McLemore would also be there. The Wizards already have Bradley Beal as a SG, and John Wall as PG. There's a sizable hole at their SF spot, with Trevor Ariza flat out disappointing and Martell Webster injured/also disappointing. Do the Wizards take BPA in McLemore or a "near" star that can also plug a hole in Otto Porter?

With the 3rd pick of the 2013 NBA Draft, the Washington Wizards select:

Otto Porter, SF, from Georgetown.
OttoPorter.jpg

This just works too well for the Wizards. They can roll out a lineup of Wall, Beal, and Porter at their first 3 positions. They can then take the rest of the offseason to really focus on their frontcourt, which is still a work in progress. McLemore was tempting, but Porter is just the fit they need.

With the 4th pick in the 2013 Kingsfans mock NBA Draft the Charlotte Bobcats select:

Ben McLemore, Shooting Guard - Kansas

benmclemore.jpg

This was an easy choice for this front office as McLemore was the best player and their board and fits well on their roster. Victor Oladipo and Anthony Bennet were considered briefly, but they couldn’t say no to McLemore’s upside and how well his skill set fits with Kemba Walker and MKG. Now they look to free agency to add some scoring punch to their front court.

With the 5th pick in the 2013 Kingsfans mock NBA Draft the Phoenix Suns select:

Victor Oladipo, Shooting Guard - Indiana

Phoenix needs everything they can get and the way to go here is BPA.
Olapido, while somewhat lacking in shooting, is an excellent athlete, a great defender and does many things that do not show up on the stat sheet. Every rebuilding team should be delighted to pick this guy on this year's draft.

With the 6th pick in the 2013 Kingsfans mock NBA Draft, the New Orleans Pelicans select:

hi-res-158798964_crop_650x440.jpg

Anthony Bennett, power forward from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Big discussion in the war room, the final choice was between Bennett and Burke. We decided to go with Bennett because we think he has an incredible offensive talent, and he could create a scary big men duo with Davis. The Pelicans need someone able to score inside and outside, Davis and Lopez are defensive players with limited offensive game, and Anderson is just a shooter. I also believe he can play a little SF, so the coach will be able to play different lineups and create miss-matches depending on the teams we play.

Burke was in consideration, but we have Vazquez and we believe he is our PG for the future.

With the 7th pick in the 2013 Kingsfans mock NBA draft, the Sacramento Kings select:
treyburke.jpg

Trey Burke, point guard from the University of Michigan.

With the new ownership, coaching staff and front office, all talent on the team is being evaluated. Obviously, we need a defensive-minded big and an all-around SF. With hopes that Noel, Len, or Porter would fall to us for talent and need, we had to go with the BPA. With Tyreke's contract situation and DMC seeking a max-deal, a lot of evaluation has to be done. What we are excited about with Trey is his leadership skills, all-around game and his ability to run a beautiful pick-n-roll. With DMC and Burke running the pick-n-roll, the Kings can make major waves.

We considered Dieng and some others, but felt they would be a reach with this pick. Also, trades were off the table, otherwise we would have moved up, or moved down, or traded players for picks. With Burke being drafted, (even though it isn't allowed, if this happened in real life) we would definitely look to move Tyreke to the 2 or sign-n-trade him, and trade Marcus Thornton. Remember, new front office, new coach, new ownership= new culture and new team.

With the 8th pick in the 2013 Kingsfans mock NBA draft, the Detriot Pistons select:

Caldwell_Pope-Kentavious-Georgia-12.jpg

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, SG, University of Georgia.

With a bevy of combo guards filling both back court positions, SG is the position that best fits the value vs. available players at pick #8. Detroit's biggest needs being a 3-&-D SF, does not fit in this draft position, so they go for a very solid all-around SG. He has above average shooting percentages from all areas of the floor and is an outstanding rebounder for his position. Solid on the defensive end if not spectacular. A possible modern day Joe Dumars.

Just a note: I have link the player's name on the draft board to either: a) the KF Scouting Report done by our own members, or b) Wikepedia. I urge everybody to check the KF Scouting Reports (in the Prospects forum) as they're incredibly well done and worth reading. :)

With the 9th pick in the 2013 Kingsfans mock NBA draft, the Minnesota Timberwolves select:

Screen-shot-2012-11-20-at-5.53.56-AM.jpg

Shabazz Muhammad, SG/SF, UCLA

This really wasn't a difficult decision in Minny - with the board going mostly as expected, the Timberwolves' clear need here was a SG and the only competition for Shabazz went at #8. Minnesota isn't going to worry too much about Muhammad's inability to pick up assists over his freshman season, what with Rubio running the offense. Shabazz's job will be to shoot threes, drive, and cut off the ball, three things he is quite capable of doing. Barring a free agent signing Shabazz moves into the starting job right away, so the 'Wolves are hoping for a Rookie of the Year candidacy - he'll certainly shoot enough, so if he makes them fall he'll be in contention.

It's very late here and I don't have the time to do a write-up/post a picture, but I'll come back tomorrow and edit this post with the relevant info. I'll just briefly make the pick so as not to hold this thing up!

With the 10th pick, the Portland Trailblazers select: Steven Adams

steven-adams-file_original.jpg

Pretty easy choice. Portland are looking for a rim protector, and even though Adams is a project, he's one with considerable upside on the defensive side of the ball. It was between Adams and Zeller here, but ultimately I went with the better fit in theory. His stock has risen a lot over the last few weeks and it wouldn't be a shock to see them take him here.

Well, the night was late, but I'm here to do my duty. Unfortuantely, DimeDroper stole my pick. Smart man! Anyway, the 76'ers, with the apparent departure of Bynum, are very thin in the bigs dept. So with no futher ado.

With the 11th pick in the draft, the 76'ers select: Cody Zeller

With Hawes having only one year left on his contract, the 76'ers need help up front. Zeller has the most upside of all the big men left on the board. Since I had a picture of Adams ready to go, I'll see what I can come up with tomorrow for Zeller.

With the 12th pick, the Oklahoma City Thunder select: C.J. McCollum

c.j.mccollum.jpg

With Derek Fisher, Ronnie Brewer and Kevin Martin all free agents this summer, the Thunder may have a need for a backup guard off the bench. I think they would love Shabazz here, but McCollum could possibly fill a need.

In reality I am pretty sure Dallas is going to trade this pick. Rumour is they want cap space to make a run at Dwight Howard and Chris Paul. However I will pretend as though they are keeping it for the purpose of this exercise.

Dallas have 4 players under contract. Two others have player options and the rest are either restricted or unrestricted free agents. I really have only two options here; pick best player available or pick a super project to develop in the D-League or overseas. Theres no point at trying to look at whether the prospects will "fit" as at the moment the Mavs roster is so bare there is noone to compare to.

Therefore with the 13th pick of the kingsfans mock draft the Dallas Mavericks select:

Michael Carter-Williams
MCW.jpg

We were really tempted by high risk high reward players and seriously thought about going with an international prospect such as Gobert, Adetokoubo, Karasev or Nogueira. In the end we rolled the dice with Carter-Williams and hope that his passing and defence are as good as advertised. We're hoping that the syracuse system hasnt masked weaknesses in this department.

With the 14th pick, the Utah Jazz, select Kelly Olynyk, center Gonzaga.

The Utah Jazz will most likely not resign Al Jefferson and Paul Millsap, so they will need a good backup for Enes Kanter and Derrick Favors. Olynyk seems like the typical Jazz player, tough and hard knosed. Not a great rebounder but he can provide shooting and scoring as backup. The Jazz will most likely go point guard with their next pick. There are plenty of second tier guards available or perhaps a trade with a certain team we know and love for a hometown hero. :)

With the 15th pick in the 2013 NBA Draft, The Milwuakee Bucks select Tony Snell.

Although this may be considered a reach, Monta Ellis opting out of his contract with us hints that he likely won't return. In order to replace his position, we are going with Snell who can provide multiple things right away to this playoff team. HE can help fill in the three point shooting they will be missing from Monta (and hopefully at a more efficient rate) and he will play much better defense than Monta has. We consider this replacement as a win-win, and Snell should pair up with Jennings better than Ellis did.

I hate to be a nitpicker here, but we're currently on pace to get to pick #22 by the time the real NBA draft starts.

If we assume that there won't be much activity during 8 "sleep hours" (not a perfect assumption due to time zone issues, but...) we'll need to get 2 picks per hour to actually finish. Any suggestions?

I was just thinking about that. Would someone like to volunteer to make the pick for Boston?

EDIT: I think next year we'll start the draft a lot earlier, to make sure we get through it. :)

Both imabored and KingsCitizen were on the board earlier, but have now apparently left. Since they would be next up after Darth Divac, it probably doesn't make much sense to make the Boston pick and just get hung up again for the night.

I'm going to be around all day tomorrow so I can monitor things much more closely. I don't want to deprive anyone of their turn, but it would be nice to at least get through the first round.

Does anybody have any other suggestions?
