John F. Salmons

John Galt

Starter
Is anyone starting to make room on their plate for some crow when it comes to Salmons? He seems to be a pretty good player based on early returns. I know it's early but if not this year, then probably next year and most certainly the year after that he will produce more than an aging Bonzi Wells.

Is it possible Petrie and those other couple gms were right about him after all?

In 71 minutes he's 9/18 for 30 points, 14 boards, 6 assists, 3 steals, 3 blocks.

The preseason bright spot I think!

Let's revisit this at the All-Star break. Until then, let's try not to forget that this is preseason; many scrubs have been made to look good in preseason.

I'll give him credit when it matters. Remember, he's putting up numbers against the opponent's scrubs.

Salmons is putting forth effort and he's rapidly working himself into some decent minutes. And that's why Petrie brought him here.

Petrie has the insiders advantage on Salmons.

For all we know CWebb could have seen how good he was at practice and told Petrie to pick him up. We don't know, but the point is Petrie has access to info far beyond that of even the most avid fan. If Petrie made the deal the guy has to have something going for him.

I'll give the kid some credit. I don't expect him to start so if he can give our second line an advantage over other teams 2nd line I'll take it.

Time will tell if he earns his salary but so far so good.

I have to disagree, George. I think you can get an idea of things like focus, effort, etc. from pre-season, especially in basketball.

It's way too early to start serving any crow. Let's see how they do in ... oh, I don't know ... maybe one or two REAL games first?

geez ppl this preseason is preseason crap has to to stop. Now if the tables were turned and Salmons looked like an idiot out there doing nothing you guys would be all over it saying i told you so and how you were so right. But the guy does good and all we get is oooohhhh uhhhmmmm duhhhh its only preseason what a crock of ****.

Errrr......

If a 4 year veteran can't perform well during the pre-season games then there would be something seriously wrong.

While I have been very pleased in what Salmons has shown so far in the pre-season we also need to keep it in perspective. As GGG said, Jason Hart was impressive during the pre-season last year but was pretty crap during the regular season.

As far as Salmons is concerned, so far so good but lets hold of a bit before we annoit him as this great steal of the free agency.

i never said he was great. All i said is if the tables were turned and he was doing aweful the nahsayers would be all over it saying he was crap and the preseason defense would not be acceptable if that were true. you know it would be like all of you do. Same as it is with Amundson and Talyor they are dong aweful but no once in those threads bashing them has anybody said its just preseason.

Double standards are so blatant around here its become a joke.

And why should it be? He's not playing big minutes against quality opposition in a game that matters in the preseason; both teams are going deep into their benches, all game long and, as Salmons is a reserve, he's going to get most of his minutes against scrubs. That's why "big" numbers in the preseason are not valid. And that's also why, if he were NOT putting up said numbers, that every criticism would, in fact, be valid.

Salmons has played well for the most part. First game not really, first half here as a starter not really. But otherwise, he's played well. But its preseason, and that can basically never be stressed enough. Last year Jason Hart looked good during preseason and we all know how that worked out. Meanwhile Mike Bibby looked godawful, and yet went on to average a career high 21ppg. Think its far better for Salmons confidence, and given his attitude in the past, committment to the team, for him to show well here. But as a predicator of anything you just don't know.

I know it's been said, but I'm going to help hammer it home:

P-R-E-S-E-A-S-O-N!

Just like bad things (like Ron's shooting) cannot deter us too much (although when we look @ his shooting since leaving Indiana - it isn't pretty), good things like Salmons should give too much hope.

I'd like for him to do well. I'd like for us to not remember Bonzi Wells by the end of the season, but he's got 80-some-odd-games to show that (and hopefully more games than just that)

if you want to compare him to Bonzi that will only take like 40 games as bonzi was hurt most of the season. :)

Really i do understand the argument of the preseason games. But on the other hand most ppl werent even expecting that much so some credit is due to him. He looks controlled and don't look to be playing out of his mind to get the numbers he is. It looks like its all coming in stride and coming easy to him without much effort. that is what I am looking at. It would be different if he was 100 mph every where and getting into everything but he isn't he is just playing his game. Its alot different when your not watching AI and C-Webb handle the ball 95% of the time.

I agree. Bonzi was in a contract year and played a shortened season. He played out of his mind, but I, personally, think it was an abberant year for him and not the norm. It'll be interesting to see him in Houston.

I'll give him the credit he deserves. He's played quite well. Of course, I wasn't really trashing him before he came. I was quite ambivalent to it.

That's not fair and it's not true.

Besides, did I miss the post that explained when and where you were annointed as the post continuity editor?

People change their minds all the time. In addition, if P then Q doesn't necessarily mean if Q then P.

I know this must grieve you but PRE-SEASON means the time before the regular season starts. And, looking at the calendar, it's pretty clear that it's PRE-SEASON. That means we take the good and the bad with a grain of salt because the main objective in PRE-SEASON isn't to win the game. During PRE-SEASON the coaching staff uses a lot of combinations to try and determine which players will be on the roster once the regular season starts and how those players' talents can be used most effectively.

This isn't a college class. There aren't mid-term exams and people aren't graded on consistency in their outlooks. It's sports. We can change our minds within the course of one possession. We can have different opinions on similar situations. We can have similar opinions on different situations.

We don't know what would happen if the tables were turned because they aren't turned.

Watching Philly closely last year, I can honestly say that Salmons is not a bad player. That being said, he isn't anything close to a good one either.

i never said he was great. All i said is if the tables were turned and he was doing aweful the nahsayers would be all over it saying he was crap and the preseason defense would not be acceptable if that were true.

Sure they would. And they'd be just as wrong for doing so.

you know it would be like all of you do.

"All of you", huh? Sheesh, don't deal in absolutes or anything.

Same as it is with Amundson and Talyor they are dong aweful but no once in those threads bashing them has anybody said its just preseason.

Amundson and Taylor have about... oh, NOTHING to live up to. Salmons was the one we chose to sign over Bonzi. He's got the huge long-term contract, he's the only one with any particular expectations, and he's the only one likely to see major playing time. If the other two average a combined four points per game this year... that's EXPECTED. If that were Salmons, it would be a dispapointment. It's hard to believe that a intelligent guy like yourself can't see the difference there.

Double standards are so blatant around here its become a joke.

"Around here?" The world is full of double standards. If you only see them in certain areas you're being terribly deceived most of the time.
