Jerry Reynolds is Special

Jerry is an absolute delight and the perfect counter to Grant's NY style. His Indiana country boy schtick is coupled with his amazing knowledge of the game back to and including being a coach a couple of times. And he is truly humorous. The younger anti-Jerry KingsFans.com crowd can be partly excused for their attitudes about him by likely not listening to the 29 other talking pairs on NBA TV games.

Over the years my wife and I have collected "Jerryisms", those amazing tidbits that pop out from him without thinking. He is 60% of the reason we always listen to Kings on satellite. Grant is very good but he is complimented big time by Jerry and his knowledge base.

When you listen to all the other broadcast pairs on NBA TV, he and Grant are in the top 3. They are not blatant "homies" like many, they know the game and share compliments about the opposition when warranted.

And BTW, we both are educated (BS and MS), live in suburbia, opposite politically and both love listening to Jerry 100% of the time.

I'm basically with Capt. Factorial on this. I like Jerry. I think a lot of people take some of his remarks as being serious, when he is actually being very unserious. Does he get carried away with comparisons sometimes? Sure.

But in a world of full of self-important, self-congratulatory blowhards, Jerry is about as real and genuine a person as you'll find on air. He's always kind and I find his enclyclopedic knowledge (usually accurate) of players and the league pretty amazing.

I like him for a lot of the same reasons I like Gary Gerould.

I had League Pass for a year and actually became much more impressed with Jerry and Grant. Whoa, there are some bad announcers out there in NBA land!

I have to watch all the games on league pass, so at least 50% of the time I get someone other then jerry and grant , and I have to say sacramento fans have nothing to complain about here.. I think they work because they are so different.

If I had to rank announce teams IMO it would go something like this ..

1) Celtics ( Sorry, Tommy is my boy .. not to mention the red head from needham, (Tommy's wife who has been battling with cancer, died yesterday ) and then Mike Gorman is also a great play by play guy
2) Nets .. great team there
3) Knicks .. only thing I even remotely like about New York
4) Kings

and then the rest are pretty bad ..

Yes! Yes! and YES!! You and your wife are my two new favorite people, Dude. BTW - I am also educated (BS).

I like Jerry Reynolds more than Gary Gerould. At least he doesn't sound down on the team all the time.

Now that is just...wrong.

Precisely while Gerould is so good actually. He's honest.

And unlike Jerry, he actually knows the game. I get a chuckle out of people acclaiming Jerry's knowledge of the game. I coould give a damn about most of his down home shucksterism (I'd probably be insulted if I thought it was aimed at me as blatant pandering, but since its not, its amusing enough). But his basketball acumen, when filtered throught the homer vision, is just sad. If you know, makes you yell "shut up Jerry!" at least half a dozen times a game. Then he covers it up by playing the rube. Give Jerry Steven A. Smith's delivery and we;d all be sitting here talking about what an idiot he was. Give him Barney Fife's and he's "harmless" and "knowledgible" as he talks about the unimportance of shotblocking, how John Salmons is a better SF than Ron Artest, and how having your centers out at the three point line doesn't make much differenc eot your offensive rebounding because its just as easy to run in for them. It is indeed a shocker he won 25% of his games as coach. He should stick to the jokes.

I find this a little amusing. A bunch of nice folks here who have no hope of ever getting paid a dime for their basketball knowledge running down a guy who's been drawing checks from the same NBA team for nearly 24 years. He's lasted through countless GMs, several owners and more head coaches than anyone can name without using Google to find them all. Jerry may be country, but he isn't a hick and has more common sense and hard knowledge than you guys give him credit for. Yes he overhypes some guys that probably shouldn't have, but he's probably made more good decisions for the Kings and Monarchs than bad ones. He's been a little lucky along the way, but you have to be to stay in the NBA. He might annoy you as a color guy, but I find I can't stand listening to most of those guys anyway. They aren't there to fill the viewer with knowledge, they are there to entertain and make the broadcast fun while trying to give a little insight on the game. That is what color guys are supposed to do. If you get him off camera, you would find the guy knows his stuff.

Oh please... They let Elgin Baylor run the Clippers for twenty-two years. You going to defend his "hard knowledge," too? Isaiah Thomas ran two franchises and an entire league into the ground, and he's still getting paid by the Knicks.

Contrary to sentimental opinion, not everybody who holds a long-term position in an NBA front office is qualified/deserving of the job. All it takes is an in; you don't necessarily have to be knowledgeable to get in, and you certainly don't have to be knowledgeable to stay in.

Having been made to listen to Reynolds' notion of "color commentary" for several years now, and having seen what he's done to my team in an executive capacity before that, I am disinclined to attribute to "hard knowledge" what could just as easily be attributed to having friends in high places, and knowing how to work the system.

My grandfather is 91 years old... Even when the kings games aren't on he talks about how much he hates Jerry Reynolds...

"What's he looking at? Why is his head always turned sideways like he's looking at Grant but looking above the camera lens out of the corner of his eyes?"

A few days ago my grandpa was complaining about something so I just said "Tell them how much you hate Jerry" and he went on for like a half hour.. Gotta love my grandpa! :)

Old guys tend to rant about stuff.

Manys of our Kings fans act like old geezers; some are, some not.

Much as working within the entertainment business for 25 years may not indicate strong expertise in that business, incessant ranting by casual observers is clearly irrelevant and signifies nothing.

don't like Jerry that much he always seems like a Captain Obvious to me and saying some stupid things like comparing K-mart to Jordan lol
Gary Gerould could have been a much better colour analyst than him

you are correct

Gary Gerould could have been a much better colour analyst than him

Agreed!!!!!

I just wanna thank everyone for giving me both sides of the Jerry Reynolds topic. I will never be a Reynolds fan but I guess there are some that say they like Jerry. It all boils down to a matter of opinion I guess. If I had the power, I wouldnt want Jerry Reynolds in my organization. Jerry does have an extensive backround on the kings, but I cant stop laughing when he speaks. Hearing him say Beno Draino or Tazmainian Sloveinian (spelling), or Brad B52 Bomber Miller always gives me a chuckle. All I know is that I will never drink the Reynolds Kool Aid.

This was my first post and I see Im on a cool forum....................

The Howdy Dootie = Grant was to funny!

Jerry will always be one of my favorite color anylasts. I hate Grant.......he is a complete NERD. The only time I like Grant is when he gets excited. But Jerry is a very amusing person. I'm very glad we have him, he is probly one of the reasons I'm as big as a Kings fan as I am.

P.S. Is it just me or does Grant act very rude to Jery. Whenever Jery is saying something Grant will just say "sure" in a very nostalgic and rude way.

You use the handle "showtime" on a Sacramento Kings board and you call Jerry Reynolds retarded?

That's my showtime basketball.

I have a copy of that magazine thanks to a good friend. It's in wonderful shape.

I have one that's not in such wonderful shape since it left it sitting on a glass desk next to the window thorugh the summer. Has a very distinct angled fade across it where the sun hit it around the edge of the building. Unique looking though. Should be worth more. :D

Amen!!! I don't think Sac fans understand how good we have it. We have the BEST announcing team in the league. I am sorry if you disagree but I think it's the absolute truth.
