jerel McNeal on the kings summer league team

would you be happy if he makes the team?

It could be a solid late addition -- when somebody started a thread about picking up undrafted players, of all the undrafted littles McNeal was the guy I was most interested in. Undersized (Douby sized) but he's another tough player and his focus is defense. His big problem is that since he is Douby-sized he's a SG stuck in a PG body and defending bigger SGs could be a problem strengthwise. But this is where having a strong 6'5" defense minded PG could come in handy -- you could bring McNeal in at SG alngside Evans, and have Evans guard the SG while McNeal guarded the PG.

With the sudden obvious change of focus to defense/toughness in these young guys we are tagging, you have to think that there are several former coaches of ours who choked on our softness watching this and thinking, what the hell took you so long Geoff? I'm a little nonplussed myself. Did finishing as the worst defensive team suddenly jar Geoff awake? Or is this just more reactionary stuff -- react to the bad defense last year, but not actually demonstrating any real committment as soon as the immediate crisis is dealt with and we return to mediocrity. The other alternative of course is just that somebody over at Kings' HQ finally forwarded Geoff a link to my stuff and he suddenly saw the light. ;)

If there's one thing I love about you Bricky, its your humility. :D

I think the draft shows some flexibility by Petrie. You know the one word I didn't hear from Petrie prior to the draft when describing those attributes he wanted? Shooting. He's not blind. He could see that we had a bunch of guys who could shoot, but with major deficiencies elsewhere. Now that doesn't mean that he would go overboard and draft Thabeet (:D) who couldn't score in our lifetime, but it does mean that he gave more weight to physicality, toughness, athleticism, etc when he chose the Kings draft picks. I'm sure he didn't like the experience of getting sand kicked in "his" face every time he watched a Kings game.:)

I think that the undrafted segment is the perfect place for Geoff to look for undersized shooters and other tweeners, so I fully approve of this move.

one thing. his strengths says that he is a solid passer. He averaged 4 assist a game. Just wondering what current NBA player would you compare him to in terms of ability. I saw where it says is a good 3pt shooter and defender as well.

well usually this time of the year he is depressed at what moves we are making and the decisions that are being made. For the first time in 4 years Brick actually seems upbeat about the future. To the point that he writes 2 paragraphs about an undersized sg being invited to join our summer league team.

yep Kingsfans thats the sign. Things are turning toward the right direction. :D

I haven't seen him play much, but I've heard his name in college basketball talk. Always glowingly about how hard he works, the leader he is, and just what an outright stud.

Scouting report: Tough, undersized two, with some possibility at the point who was a standout in the Big East in a guard oriented offense.

Sounds a little like Randy Foye, no?

Give him a shot.

I would also like to give Josh Heytveldt a chance. I would hope he has learned one of lifes lessons by now. He can shoot and board. Runs the floor pretty well. Could be a steal.
