Jason Thompson's foul issues

Much as getting rid of him or whatnot is silly, so is trying to minimize a real problem -- our 6'11" PF is shooting 39% from the field, and 80% of his shots come in the paint. In fact few of them are even post moves where he has to beat the guy -- most are follows or setups from teammates. That shows a rather disturbing lack of touch around the hoop. Like Reke, we may have to put him on a dunk only diet. Or just start feeding him a valium before games, because I think so many of his problems stem from the same basic problem -- he runs around out there like he's just scarfed down a box of cocaine powdered doughnuts before every game, and never settles in and takes his time to get things right. Always in a rush at everything.

On offense that kind of thing can be worked on for sure. Give him some clear out plays and have him practice them over and over again like Alonzo Mourning style. Some designed plays like that that allow him to get robotic would be a start. Hustle is good but at his size restraint is as important.

That and hopefully time will calm him down some. BTW first post.

You'd think we'd recognize this for what it is ... The Francisco Garcia syndrome. Maybe we should just make him do 1-on-1's Cisco for about two hours right before a game.

Look at how he runs and look at his footwork and you'll see a similarity with Dennis Rodman. A little bit of polishing and he could become a Rodman type player. No post moves on offense, mediocre at best in finishing around the rim, but a monster in rebounds because of quickness and determination to get the ball. Of course, he also has to learn not to be so foul prone when defending.

Rebound, rebound, rebound....and he will be great.
Not in Rodman's style. Rodman was a pogo stick, who wasn't able to go up and take rebounds away from bigger players. He was able to play volley ball and bat the ball away from bigger players. And, since he was quicker, he could get back up faster and so he could take the ball away. It wasn't unusual for Rodman to tip the ball up 2 or 3 times before he eventually got the rebound.

JT has no height to his hops. 100% of his dunks last year were ASSISTED. That means he NEVER went up for a Offensive Rebound, came down with it , and then went up for a Dunk. And, he only shot 50% for his tips last year. And, his Tips and Dunks accounted for 36% of his shots, and 46% of his shots came from outside. So, basicly he has no inside game of his own.

He has shown a little more low post moves since he started without Spencer. Creating his own dribble and driving to the basket, and some use of the left hand, along with a baby hook in the paint. But, it's still early in his low post development, and so far mildly effective. But, we are never going to see any thunderous dunks at the end of JT's drives and post moves. He just doesn't have the length or vertical leaping ability.

We should be doing that only with Spencer. JT is going to need time to perfect those moves and game time isn't the time to practice them. JT does exactly what he's needed to do, shoot the midrange jumper at a high percentage and cleanup on the boards. Trying to make him our center when we already have a better one, is senseless. And, forget that he played center in college, because obviously he used his size and didn't spend the time developing a low post game.

Don't think he was suggesting make JT a center, just that we settle his game with some post moves -- PFs are allowed to use those too. ;)
