Donte's potential at the moment is far above Rashard just due to his defense. His mentality has completely changed this year. You can see that he gets more excited and pumped up after making a defensive play than he does after making an offensive play.
Last year Donte sat at the 3pt line and missed shot after shot. He always said when interviewed that he saw himself in the mold of Rashard but with more of a 'to-the-bucket' mentality. The problem is that we never saw that on the court.
This season, he's taking defense first, then offense. And to be honest some of his takes to the basket are things that no other player in the Kings uniform can accomplish due to his length and athleticism.
I'm completely in agreement that in order to reach his potential he needs to become consistent with his outside shot. But that doesn't necessarily mean it has to be a 3pt shot. I know out of college he was a 3pt gunner, but he can easily reach his potential if he plays with-in the 3pt line and spends more time in the post and at the rim.
One other thing:
Look at his statline in Today's game against the Suns:
2 points
5 rebounds
4 assists
2 steals
2 blocks
1 turn-over
Oh, and that's just in 17 minutes of play.
I'm going to be honest here. I don't need him to be a 20 PPG scorer. If he can consistently bring lock-down defense, aggression towards the rim, some passing and rebounding, he will be a major asset.
What is difficult is that he's a completely new player this season. Had he played like this last season, I'd say that his potential is just as high as Tyreke's.
I think that Tyreke will be the better player because he seems to be the far steadier player, and I have doubts that Donte will ever reach his full potential, but if he can show the same growth he's shown us this season and build on that for the next couple of years the Kings are in very, very good shape.
