I Can't Stand Listening to Gary Gerold

Purple Reign

Starter
I respect him and everything he has done for this organization. But man he accentuates the negatives so much, so early into a ball game. Listening to him, you would think that the Kings are being blown out 105-2 with 11:30 left into the first quarter.

Dear Gary,
An NBA game is 48 minutes. It is never over after half a quarter, i don't care how poorly you think they are playing.

Signed,
Aggrivated Man:mad:

P.S. I know I am in the minority, so let me have it!!!;)

Just try listening to the guys who do the Hornet's PBP down here. You will be very GRATEFUL for Gary!!

As long as I can remember, he's had that borderline whining apocalyptic style. When things are going good, he's great to listen to. When the Kings are struggling or not really showing effort, he's very predictable in what he's going to say and how he's going to say it.

I like Gary. He's a welcome voice. The only thing that you have to laugh at every now and then is how old school corny he is with some of what he says.

Gary is ace. He's just watched a lot of bad games. I personally prefer a bit of pessimism to blatant PR.
Exactly. Gary Gerould doesn't sugar coat what he sees. I think he's fantastic. His PBP really lets me "see" the game, when I can only listen.

EDIT: Yes, he is old school, which includes being the penultimate professional. And very highly regarded by his peers.

Disagree...

I really enjoy the G-Man's pbp, he's unbiased, and objective as they come. Plus I think his voice and pace are easy to follow along with.

But that's just me.

Not just you...me too.:)

Haven't listened to him in years, but back when I did, he was one of the very best. And part of that was precisely because he was never a pathetic homer spouting out silly platitiudes and excuses. Always knew where his loyalties were, but if we sucked, we sucked, and there was no politics about it. Never had to translate from "Garyese" into "realityese".

That's funny; I love listening to him call games for precisely the same reasons...

I love listening to Gary Gerould call Kings games for the same reasons already mentioned. After todays game, I flipped it over to the Pacers-Celtics game and had to listen to the "ultimate homer" (ex-player, ex-coach, still a moron) Tommy Heinson....He's so bad I feel like sending Gerould cash for being so great!!;)

Gary's just a veteran broadcaster who's seen more than enough losing basketball over the years to recognize the characteristics (turnovers, bad shot selection, etc.), and he probably has a shorter fuse about those things these days than he use to.

I know the feelin' Purple Reign ....

When the King's are losing ..... it's like he gets me ALL WORKED-UP and the frustration just ALL COMES OUT .... and I'm yellin' and everything ..

... but listen to my words .... it's not GG ... he's saying what we are feeling and watching .... and it sucks ... what I do is get-up, get-out and leave the room ... it's funny how I listen-n-go with what the G-man says.

He really sets a mood - negative or positive .... and I'm right there with him !!!

At this point, we don't need sugar-coating. We need someone who will give us the cold, hard facts. If anyone can do that without making it unpalatable, it's Gary Gerould.

He knows what the players need to do and NOT do as well as they do. I'm glad he's right there, saying it loudly enough for them to hear. It certainly can't hurt...

;)

Don't get me wrong, I respect the heck out of the guy. Class with a Capital "C". But when the Kings make mistakes that NBA teams tend to do, he gets all bent out of shape like he is ready to throw his headset down and go home. AND IT IS ONLY THE FIRST HALF OF THE FLIPPIN FIRST QUARTER, FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!! I am not saying he has to be a homer, but what I am saying is he has to have some balance when things are going bad at a time when there is time to turn it around. IMHO.

Just remember that he's been the Kings radio announcer since they came to Sacramento. I'm sure he loves his Kings just as much as any of us. So he gets frustrated as much as we do and vocalizes (because that's his job).

ditto...hell, I'm the same way, after 21 seasons of following this damn team!:D

I think he's seen enough games to know when they are falling into bad habits. He's letting those of us without a TV know what he's seeing (and, more importantly, what he knows we'd be seeing/feeling if we were watching the game).

He's probably the best radio guy I've ever heard.

i haven't had many opportunities to listen to gary, but what i have heard i adore. he has such a great quality to his play by play, i love his emotions. i also love the soothing ton of his voice, the excitment he gets when the kings do something good.

i really wish i had more opportunities to listen to gary

Tommy Heinsohn has a special charm, so long as you're a Celts fan. For local guys you can do much worse, usually the more recent ex-players wearing the hideous pin-striped suits who can't speak coherent English that are clearly in the wrong line of work. When I first got league pass I was amazed at how bad most local announce teams are. At least you can understand Tommy. He's doing the job he's paid to do since Gorman and especially Cousy are far more critical and objective. Its just a schtick like Walton and Snapper.

Nope, he does/did IRL... with Dr. Jerry Punch down on pit road.

Don't forget the Raley's commercials either. :D

That was a few years ago. Gman's doing NHRA for ESPN/ESPN2. Hes the Victory lane pit reporter(If you can call it that) where he talks to Drag racers after their runs.

Theres no Event this weekend(Friday-Sunday) so he'll be on the call Sunday.

Hopefully Gman will be in Indy in May.

I love the Gman's call. Hes honest. Doesnt B. S. I echo pretty much every post in the thread.
