How would you dish out minutes if you were coach?

BawLa

Starter
The stipulation is that everyone is healthy.

I would dish out minutes like so:

Bibby: 40 min at PG
Bonzi: 30 min at SG
Artest: 40 min at SF
SAR: 30 min at PF
Miller: 40 min at C

Kevin: 18 min at SG
Cisco: 8 min at PG, 8 min at SF
Skinner: 8 min at C
KT: 18 min at PF

I'd give Skinner much more than 8 minutes (for a number of reasons), Bibby a few less, and Bonzi a few more.

My first thought:

J. Hart - 0 mins

F. Garcia - back up PG mins.

When J. Hart went in last night...everything went down hill.

I'm in the minority, I suppose, because I just don't buy the "cast in stone" minutes stuff.

And, aside from message boards, I don't think anyone else does either.

;)

Personally, I would like to keep the starter's minutes down to around 35 each. It keeps them fresher, reduces the chances of injury and they can play harder when they know they won't be on the floor for so long. Earlier this year the starters had to play a lot of minutes because the bench performed so poorly. I think the bench is good enough now to give the starters more of a rest.

The substitutions should still be based on what is going on in the game but I think that 40+ minute games for the starters is unnecessary.

This pretty much mirrors my feelings. Keep the starters below 38-40 when possible. But, base substitutions on the game in progress, not on some preconceived plan...i.e. be flexible.

what happened with "earning" minutes.

How about -

You play well - You play

You suck - You sit

it depends on the schedule and opponents... starters would have to play less minutes on the first game of a b2b unless i have to play them to stay in the game for the win.....

good thread idea but it really depends....

It is no exact science to set the minutes your roster will play- I think that is what VF21 was getting at- because you need to be flexible with each opponent, foul and injury situations, who is playing well, etc... For instance, last night against Phoenix we saw Rick be flexible because Bibby wasn't playing well and Brad was a bad matchup, and that is what any good coach will do.

However- you can set a range for what each player should be getting, however, this is almost a fruitless exercise because I have a feeling that "the starting five" might never play together (sort of like last year when everytime someone was ready to come back, someone else went down)....

Point guard, off guard, small forward
Bibby, Bonzi, Artest- these guys should all play around 36 minutes a night give or take, depending on matchups. The key backups at these 3 positions are Kevin and Cisco, and they should split the 36 minutes that are left over at these three positions. A few things that should happen with these smaller positions...
1) Either Artest or Bonzi should be on the floor at all times for defense and intensity
2) If Bibby is out of the game, both Artest and Cisco need to be in
3) Bibby and Brad should never be on the bench at the same time because they are the two best at stretching a defense
4) If Cisco/Artest get pressured and start turning it over a lot, I like Price as the backup PG

Down low
Assuming SAR becomes the starter again, he should play about 30 minutes a game, Brad about 36. The primary backups are KT and Skinner... A few things that should happen...
1) Ron Artest should never be the PF
2) SAR should never be the center (unless the matchup- like last night against Phoenix so dictates)- but this should be RARE
3) Skinner needs to get about a 6 minute run each half

I agree with the cast in stone minutes part, but I DON'T want Brad playing 40 minutes a game. That is just plain asking for it. I'd rather our guys be down around 36 minutes for once.

If I were "dishing out minutes" I think I would stick with a clasic. I mean you really can't beat Franciscan Wear for day in day out service... I'd stay with the Delicious Apple pattern. Of course it does not travel well so away games I'd be looking at recycled paper paltes and tupper wear for dishing out those minutes. Then come play off time... break out the Wedge Wood china and the Waterford crystal! I mean it's the play offs after all you have to show some class!

Had that system been in effect earlier this year, we would have forfeited at least 6 games for failure to have 5 players on the court.

I see your gameplan with Hart... Run him so hard (3 straight games in fact) without rest, that way, he will be so tired that he will be unable to play in any more games... I like it!

agree with everything BUT the PF position...Kenny fits this style of play in the starting line-up alot better....Kenny=30 min, SAR off the bench...he can contribute mightily from there, 15-20 min. of offense off our bench is much more valuable. Kenny might be struggling with his shot at the moment, but it will come around soon...no need to give him the hook for the bench for that, we cant get alot of what Kenny offers, coming off the bench. He's consistent with about 14 pts/8-9 rebs a game in the starting lineup, and he's damn quick and aggressive on the defensive end, which fits our new style. SAR is a low post offensive player, who is very slow on the defensive end of the ball, and with him in there 3-0-40 mins. a game on the offensive end, he draws the tempo of the ball movement down to a crawl sometimes, which creates alot of lulls.
