Hi guys I am "UK kings fan" and I’m the newbie of the board justwant to say hello and say a bit about myself before I start posting...

As my name suggests im a Sacramento kings fan who lives in the UK (Leeds tobe precise) for the last year and a bit I have supported the kings and followedthem closely. My kings support started when i got NBA2k11 (i have always likewatching NBA but never followed a team) Where i liked playing as the SacramentoKings i learned what i could from the team and the league learning playersnames and a lot more about the league. I then moved on through last seasonwatching games where i can but it’s hard living in a +8 hour time zone andreading up on the latest trades and story’s on sites such as newsnow andNBA.com. I would like to think myself able enough to talk about the Sacramentokings with reals fans now after the research and a year of learning about themso i thought it would be a good time to join the site and start debating.

Although I’m English and a newbie to the NBA i think i will be able to talkto you about most stuff however I don’t know much about the history of league(apart from the kings and the big stuff from the past) and i know very littleabout some of the players in the league who are lesser known so please be considerate. :)

Apart from that I’m really pleased to be here talking to people who care forthe sport i like and the team I love

UK Kings fan, welcome. Most people here are passionate about the Kings. It's not perfect here but it wouldbe difficult to find a better place to discuss the Kings. Ask questions about what people are talking about. None of us knows everything.

Welcome, and Glenn is right. You can change everything as far as I know, except your name. You can add an avator, and might I suggest you find one a little more appealing than Glenns, which looks like someone from the movie, "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre", or perhaps, "The Hills have Eye's". ;)
 
Welcome UK! Quick question... Why the Kings?? I mean we have not exactly been great the past few years and you said you don't know much about the team history.. Anyways just curious!

Welcome. I'm Irish so don't worry about where you're from and how that will affect how you fit in. It's almost 7AM here as you'll know and I still haven't gone to bed - I got home and watched the Kings blow a very winnable game. I'm not sure that your love for the Kings will sustain through this utter s**t that we're witnessing, but if it does, well done. Unfortunately, I became hooked a long, long time ago and there's no way I'll miss a game anymore if at all possible, despite the fact that I may just lose my hair as a 20 year old due to the coaching and mistakes I'm forced to endure.

Enough rambling, and enjoy the forum. I would mention something about Leeds and United, but I won't! :p

like i said above i knew little about basket ball but was playing nba2k11 i played with the kings (having been to sacramento,la and san fransico on holiday) and fell in love with the team it had the rookie of the year and i just liked them.... i then watched a few games and followed them ever since. i now know the history of the kings and little bit about nba in general

where do you watch the game??? and i think im here to stay due to the fact i did follow them through last season and that wasnt a nice feeling at all but onwards and upwards (or anouther good draft pick)

and im a sunderland fan not leeds united so no need to say anything

Don't think there are too many Kings fans over here, i've been a fan since high school, most people in my high school team supported the Charlotte Hornets lol. No idea why.

The NBA draft - why didnt jimmier get higher up the draft he won everything a collage? and why didnt Mj only third pick dispite being great in collage or even IT an all amarican but 60th pick??

how does the draft work what do nba teams look for???

This may be one of the most difficult questions to answer. I will start out by saying that the college game is different than the professional game. I hope bajaden answers this question for you. I could try but can't do it justice.

I CAN say that most people saw Jimmer as a shooter and nothing else. Don't include me or bajaden in that group. I actually would have picked him higher if we needed to but we didn't need to do that. The other teams that picked in front of us wanted someone else so we were able to make a trade to get Salmons (ugh!) AND get Jimmer at the tenth pick. I'll shut up as although I can answer this, I definitely can't answer it better than a few others.

It's a great question for someone trying to understand what this dang game is about. It will take you a long time to understand much a it took me awhile to figure out rugby. Now rugby is my favorite sport.
 
I thought someone else would want to be more helpful. Guess not. It is usually very difficult to tell if a players game will translate to the NBA game. On draft day, picks are usually fairly close as to where they should be picked, though. Sometimes height trumps athleticism and you will see big guys get picked over mere mortals. Frequently the big guy is simply not very athletic. The biggest mistake of that sort that I remembr was picking Kwame Brown at #1. He hasn't proven to be much of anything except a very tall man with a lot of muscle.

Another mistake was picking Karl Malone at #14 as Karl went on to be one of the best if not the best PF in NBA history.

There is another very big difficulty in judging how a player will do in the NBA is that players can be drafted at age 19. They are just kids who are still growing. There is no exact way of telling how well a 19 year old will mature. There is a lot of beating and banging that goes on in the NBA and many young NBA players simply don't have the muscle and never develop it. The average male can keep growing up to age 21 so height can change. The NBA is different than college also in that the speed of the players in the NBA is often a shock to players coming out of college. I think this has been a problem for Jimmer. I think he will solve it. He came out of a weak college league and has never been challenged regularly even by great college players. That's a bit of a guess but probably true.

As to MJ: he was quite a find. I believe a 7 footer was chosen #1 that year and I don't remember #2. I didn't know IT was an All American. In any case, his height at 5' 9" scared everyone away. Heck, 6' is considered short in the NBA. There are PGs who are so big they would be very difficult for him to guard. In any case, he may be able to contribute more than one might expect.

I wish someone else would comment. I am hardly the NBA/vs college guru as I never watch college ball.

I am also no expert but I was debating writing this when you first asked the question and figured someone more knowledgeable would jump in also. The Draft is also like a popularity contest and there are ups and downs ebbs and flows. Taking our own players as examples. Jimmer played 4 years in school and while not short most believed he wasn't a pure point guard. He already has NBA range and beyond but most looked at his 4 years and figured he is closer to a finished product then a 19 year old who just oozes "potential". This is not a knock on jimmer playing 4 years he improved tremendously in the last 2 and it used to be everyone came out of school after 4.

Height and "potential" (this player could be the greatest since) play a huge role in the draft. IT is short there is no denying it and that is why he fell. The Kid can play he is tough strong fast but he is short so he fell to the bottom. I didn't think he would fall to 60 he has too much talent for it and most of us who knew his game didn't think he would drop that far. Dimemag did a series of diarys on him leading up to draft day. They didn't think he would fall either. But the gms chose noname size over him till the last pick. When you step from College to the NBA everyone you face is bigger stronger faster and better then all but the very best college players so alot of time the way a college player is successful is hard to translate to the NBA. If a 5-8 guy goes in and bangs to the rim and jumps into a 6-3 guy then lays it up its a bit different then driving into a 7-1 guys and doing the same.

Last year We had Cousins and Whiteside. Whiteside was talked about for a long time as a late lottery pick. 5.5 blocks in school is still 5.5 blocks. He as the height and athleticism to be good and the Kings were talking about trading our pick down for 2 later lottery picks and getting him and someone else. Shortly before the draft it came out that he has Adult ADD. This isn't as uncommon as people think but suddenly he was not teachable and slow and his ability to time blocks didn't matter so he dropped to us in the second round. Cousins was the best or second best potential in the draft and he is tall already had good fundamentals but had a history of having problems. With people calls coaches and whatever. Now if you dig a little some of those problems were justified but that is irrelevant here. What that means is instead of going 2 likely he fell to us at 5 because some teams didn't want to deal with him.

Its like an election. stuff comes out at the wrong time for a player and they drop even though if it had come out a year earlier gms would have had not such a strong reaction to it and while they would have dropped a little wouldn't have killed them on the draft. Alot of GMS are looking for the next MJ and where there isn't an obvious one there they look younger and at potential to gamble for one.

It used to be the NBA rules were nicer to the Tall 4 and 5 position. The 4 has changed into much more of a shooter then it used to be and the 5 has been decimated by rule changes. Alot of those rules were made because of someone like Shaq who is so big strong fast and heavy that no one else in the league could move him and defenders flew off him even if there wasn't alot of contact. Before 2000 it was almost a given that a tall center and 4 were in the top few draft slots. You can't teach Height.

does this mean we are better at drafts by going for the gambles or whould you prefer to stick to the rest of the teams in picking the safe players???
 
The Kings have tended to gamble every once in awhile whether it is in the draft or by trade. I think the feeling might be that no player really wants to play here by choice so they take what appears to be "damaged property" and take a chance. Picking Cousins was one of those deals. He was definitely "damaged" and has been a handful for the team to manage. He has been suspended several times and even threw a punch in the locker room. On the other hand, when he has his head together, he can be the best big guy in the league. CAN be.

When Cousins (aka DMC, Cuz, Boogie, etc.) had his recent fit, some people called for us to trade him as soon as possible. They might be right although the team put out an announcement that Cousins was not going to be traded. Short of murder or a revolt of his team mates against him, I will stand behind him no matter what as I see him as the future of the Kings along with a couple others. As to skill, he is VERY difficult to replace and I think most people would agree that the only player actively playing that they might prefer to have is Dwight Howard who is the best center in the league. Therefore I think we need to bend over backwards to keep him. That is my opinion only but we will NOT get another player of his caliber who wants to be here voluntarily. This is also my opinion and may not be shared by others.

I think Petrie tries to "catch lightening in a bottle" if that phrase is used in Leeds. It is the only way that I can see this franchise getting into the top half of the league.

We drafted Peja Stojakovic several years ago and the fans boo'd Petrie. Now I think almost to a person, everyone loves Peja. An unusual pick at the time, that's for sure.

We have made trades for troubled people like Chris Webber who turned out wonderfully for us. We traded for Ron Artest and that didn't turn out as well. Petrie, our GM, was one of the first to scout Europe to find players.

BTW, the numbers 1-5 are thrown around.

  1. Point guard
  2. Shooting guard
  3. Shooting forward
  4. Power forward
  5. Center

You will see arguments about whether Tyreke Evans is a 1, 2, or 3. He is 6'6" so big for a PG, can't shoot reliably from a distance so a bad shooter for a SG, and I think just too far out of his natural position to play SF although people will argue this point. (Ignore them as I am correct. :) )

I personally don't know what to call Evans either which, for me, means that the label of the position he plays is far less important than how well he plays and fits wih the team. This is still a work in progress and I think having Westphal for a coach his entire career slowed his development down. There seems to be no concept of "team" yet but simply 5 guys on the court at the same time. The last game showed some signs of hope but it's only one game. Our new coach has said he wants the team to be a family. I'm not exactly sure what that means but it is certainly a step in a different direction than before.

He is like having a prop who has great running skills or a Lomu who was 6'4" 250 lbs. who was very, very fast so he was a wing.

I'm going to keep babbling until someone else chimes in.

The present big issues to be discussed on this forum are about Jimmer. There are people who think he is awful and there are people who think he is almost the best player on the team. Certainly he is someehere in between but these discussions have drawn the most attention.
 
How does the draft work:

The team with the worst record gets the first pick (maybe - to be discussed later) and so forth. The team with the best record gets that last pick. There is a system that has special rules for the first three picks. Using a lottery system, all of the teams that didn't get into the playoffs (13 teams) get a certain amount of chances to move into the top three. Certainly #13 has a rare chance of doing that and by statistics, the worst team still has the best chance of getting the #1 pick. However the first three picks can change and recently this has worked very poorly for the Kings. I may be wrong with this but one year we had the worst record and had the most likely chance of picking first. By luck of statistics, we ended up drafting 4th and took Evans. The next year we also finished very poorly yet by luck of statistics ended up picking 5th and took Cousins.

The lottery didn't work well for us.

This lottery system was set up so a team would not deliberately lose in order to get the top pick as with the lottery, there is no guarantee that a team would get the top pick.

Somebody please step in if I got this wrong because i am not sure.

No as an answer to the first question.

Evans was a point guard in college. He was considered a PG when he was Rookie of the Year.

Most felt he would be another good player with a lot of potential. Griffin was expected to win ROY, but missed the whole season due to injury and won it the next year.

I'm going to expand just a bit on Glenn's response here. First, he slipped up - there are actually 14 teams in the lottery, not 13. The lowest-finishing team to ever win the lottery was the Orlando Magic in 1993 after having the 11th-best chance to win, although that was under a slightly different system. The lowest under the current system was the Bulls in 2008, who had the 9th-best chance. In both of those cases, the team's probability of winning was between 1-2%. In total, 8 out of 22 lotteries have been won by a team with less than a 10% chance of winning, but the highest possible probability is 25%, so the team with the worst record still doesn't have a very good chance. (There are 14 teams all with a chance, remember.) Surprisingly, in 22 weighted lotteries, the team with the highest probability has only won three times.

On the other hand, the team finishing worst is guaranteed to draft no lower than fourth. That is because only the top three slots are distributed by lottery. The remainder of the slots are distributed by order of finish of the teams who did not get one of the top three spots. This guarantees that no matter how bad their luck is in any given year, no team can drop more than three slots.
