this is clearly a move motivated by money more than anything else. i don't care if oj mayo isn't ready for the big time yet, you don't take a talented and prolific young scorer and slide him behind a washed-up, formerly-prolific scorer, unless your motivation is something other than the development of young players. the grizz, like most nba teams not situated in los angeles or new york, are struggling to sell tickets. its not a matter of whether allen iverson will "fit" in memphis, because its already understood that he won't. iverson is a ten-time all star, and he will most certainly attract more fans to the grizzlies arena this season, but he's never "fit" anywhere he's played, philadelphia included. he's a one-man show. most who play alongside allen iverson feel alienated before too long, coaches included. he's never managed to win anything because he's a chemistry nightmare...
of course, memphis signed iverson on THE CHEAP, and that's why this move will pay off in terms of tickets sold. AI's 34 now, but still, who the hell would have thought that he would be forced to sign a one-year, $3.1 million offer sheet from the effing grizzlies?! they'll rent out his services for that one year, sell a few more tickets, barely stay afloat as a franchise, and ponder the future of their young team later...
