Grizzlies sign Iverson

We need to pounce on Rudy Gay or Mike Conly. Gay might be especially available at mid season because his numbers are going to to go down with all the stat vampires on the team. The Grizz need some bench players so mabye we can find a way to unload Beno and or Nocioni. Mabye they want some cap relief if the team doesn't work out and they will consider Kenny for Gay and an unwanted contract. Either way... I want Gay. Lol.

I wish him and the Grizzlies well. This is another match, I fear, that was not - contrary to what AI might say or think - made in heaven.

I think taking on gay at this point would be a bit of a gamble for us. Without seeing how well Evans can distribute the ball first i wouldnt be too quick to make a move for gay. Gay is a potential star that needs to have the ball to be effective. So do Martin and Evans. I think our starting SF spot is reserved for a defined role player that can either play D, facilitate offense, or both. Idealy Tayshan Prince. Nocioni will suffice.
Back to the topic, I think if Memphis can minimize their turnovers, they can grab a playoff spot. They now have two dangerous scorers in the backcourt that can create their own shot. A lowpost scorer in Randolph who can also rebound. A potential defensive stallwhort in Thabeet. An athletic prototype wingplayer in Gay and a semi decent distributing pg in Conley. On paper they look really good. Like i said, minimizing turnovers will be instrumental to their success. Id like to see them use a lineup of Conley, Iverson, Mayo, Gay, Randolph/Thabeet/Gasol. Kind of like Villanova from a couple years ago.

Good fit if egos won't come first

I think Memphis is a good fit for Iverson.
They have the luxury of two PG who have legit size to easily switch to SG, that's Mayo (6'5" and Jaric 6'7").
If Conley won't improve, I can easily see AI starting for them.
That's a very potent team on the offensive end.
Gay, Mayo, and AI can shoot the ball from almost anywhere then you add a classic low post with Gasol and vet savvy of Randolph and you can expect points on every offensive position.

Their main problem is the defensive end. Maybe if somehow Thabeet/Gasol excels on the defending the post, Their is a possibility they might sneak on the playoffs. I can throw Don Nelson to coach that lineup and I can see a sure playoff spot for Memphis. Otherwise, they might be the Clippers of last season. Too good on paper but easily falls to the bottom.

Regardless of what anyone says about AI he's a true warrior like Ron Artest. In an interview I saw a couple days ago the new Griz said he's not coming in thinking just get to the playoffs, that's definitely not good enough for him. He wants much more for himself and his new teammates. Similar to when Ron-Ron arrived in Sac and guaranteed Kings would make the post season even thought at the time it seemed impossible. Yet, by force of will he got them the 8th seed with Bozi and the others buying in. I've always loved watching Iverson play way back to his days as a Georgetown Hoya. Absolutely toughest little guy I've ever seen in the NBA and plays hurt a lot - never complaining - except maybe about "prak-tiss."

this is clearly a move motivated by money more than anything else. i don't care if oj mayo isn't ready for the big time yet, you don't take a talented and prolific young scorer and slide him behind a washed-up, formerly-prolific scorer, unless your motivation is something other than the development of young players. the grizz, like most nba teams not situated in los angeles or new york, are struggling to sell tickets. its not a matter of whether allen iverson will "fit" in memphis, because its already understood that he won't. iverson is a ten-time all star, and he will most certainly attract more fans to the grizzlies arena this season, but he's never "fit" anywhere he's played, philadelphia included. he's a one-man show. most who play alongside allen iverson feel alienated before too long, coaches included. he's never managed to win anything because he's a chemistry nightmare...

of course, memphis signed iverson on THE CHEAP, and that's why this move will pay off in terms of tickets sold. AI's 34 now, but still, who the hell would have thought that he would be forced to sign a one-year, $3.1 million offer sheet from the effing grizzlies?! they'll rent out his services for that one year, sell a few more tickets, barely stay afloat as a franchise, and ponder the future of their young team later...

AI, Mayo, Gay, and Randolph are all below average passers for their positions--either Mayo needs to step it up and bring in the PG skills, or this is going to be disastrous.

Mayo IS ready for the big time. He averaged 20 ppg in his rookie year and has proven he can manufacture his own shot. Allen Iverson certainly isnt "washed up". Didnt he finish as a top 3 scorer the year before last? He got traded to the Pistons where he was relagated to backup guard. Because of that people think hes washed up??? Give Iverson the ball and he will still destroy whoever is in front of him. He's a genetic freak of a different variety.

Maybe you would want to edit your post a little bit (especially the once I bolded), because these are false.:p

First, who says Mayo will be playing behind AI? We don't know how they will use AI yet at this point in time. IMO, AI will be playing alongside MAYO if ever he will be starting - AI as PG and Mayo as SG defensively.

Also, you have to remember that AI reached the NBA FINALS once in his career and has been a perennial playoff contender most of his career. So, there is just no truth to what you are saying that the little guy had never fit to any team and had never managed to win anything.

Was he not once an NBA-MVP and two-time scoring champion?:D

A.I. has never been able to effectively mesh with other scorers. Never. The dysfunctional Denver teams were actually the best he ever did in that situation, and they got dramtically better once he left. He is incredibly ball dominant, and during his peak years would routinely hold the ball for half of the shotclock. His best team was one specifically constructed around this ball dominance, surrounding him with a whole flock of non-scoring roleplayers who would just get out of the way while he dribbled around -- Ratlif/Mutumbo, Tyrone Hill, Eric Snow, whats-his-name the rebounding roleplaying SF out of UCLA. But now in a move to sell tickets you bring in this creature and put him out on the floor with no fewer than THREE other guys who want to take 15 shots and score 20ppg (Gay, Mayo, Randolph), all of whom have their own selfish streaks. Since the Grizzlies have never mattered in the NBA, the likely implosion will scarcely matter or surprise -- how much worse can it get really? But its a tone deaf non-basketball saavy move.

i think i like my post just how it is. when AI was in philly, the eastern conference was flimsier than cardboard. getting to the nba finals once in that particular conference at that particular time just to be steamrolled by the lakers in five games isn't much of an accomplishment, in my opinion. he has no rings because he's never been able to win anything when he's had to involve his team. lebron's done more by himself in far fewer years than AI because lebron knows how to utilize his teammates, even when they are significantly under-talented...

iverson's game just never evolved. he brought a me-first street ethic with him to the nba, and it never left him. his durability has been impressive, especially considering the beating he takes night-in and night-out. he also certainly has some equally impressive individual accomplishments, and because he's the most prolific scorer that the nba has witnessed since jordan, he might be able to squeak by with some hall of fame votes someday, but i'll never think much of him, because a player of his incredible skill-level should be regularly competing for championships. all of the great ones do. and the only time iverson ever flirted with that kind of success was during a stretch in which the eastern conference was at its absolute weakest...

as for playing AI alongside mayo, i'd say that's an infinitely more asinine idea than bringing in AI to start in front of mayo as his older, fading, short-term duplicate. they both are scorers who dominate the ball. it'll be an all-out chuck-fest in that event, which actually might be kinda funny to watch...

Even in a photoshoot, they don't have enough balls to go around...
