[Game] Game 75: Kings v. Pelicans, 4/3/15 - 7pdt, 10edt

I honestly do not understand why people seem to have a problem with this. The entire country of Israel pretty much stayed up for opening night when Omri came to the Kings. It's a big deal for a country with about 1/6 of the world's population. Let them enjoy their moment. It's not like it takes anything away from anybody else.

I don't necessarily have a problem with it. Just thought it was a funny juxtaposition, given Boogie's historic string of performances.

It's not that he's better, it's that he's getting more opportunities.

Karl is having the wing on the weakside break when a shot goes up. Cuz usually boards strong side, so he's got an immediate cherry picking outlet cross court. When it's available that is.

I'll take the beating that I know is coming with this comment.......

Cuz is better without Gay. We're better with Cuz moving the ball and having control vs. the ball stopping in either Gay or Cousins hands. I'm all for moving Gay and our pick for a couple complimentary pieces. I'm realizing I'm not a fan of Gays game.

AD is scared of JT.. I'm convinced.. AD did all his damage vs. Williams.
We will run into the Pelicans in the playoffs sooner rather than later. I sure as hell hope JT is here, if for nothing else. He has a gift vs. AD.

Is it just me, or does Karl sound disappointed as hell tonight? He highlighted the missed shots that would've tied it or brought it closer to 1. 1 by Nik, and I think 2 or 3 by Ben.

He's going to get their asses back in the gym.. he doesn't sound happy at all.

It's because he's looking for the long outlet passes and not being a point guard. It's also because the style of play (PACE - "having the wing on the weakside break when a shot goes up") affords those long outlet passes because guys are being told to haul a** down the floor and you're going to get the ball on the outlet passes. I grew up on John Wooden fast break basketball. This game reminded me of those golden days when Walton was gobbling rebounds and instantaneously outletting to the wings. It can be absolutely devastating to the opposition. This is what should have happened from freaking Day One, and after years we are finally seeing it. Better late than never!

I do judge him against us because of that reason. Many say that Davis and Cousins are the two best young bigs in the game, and I agree. If I'm facing the guy that is the other part of that equation, I wanna show up and ball hard. I want him one on one. You see none of that. Cousins lives for this kind of ****. The bigger the name the better. It's a personal choice because I greatly enjoy watching Cousins play and I love his style of play. Davis.. not so much. I just can't get all goo goo gaga over him like everyone else.
But that's bad logic, though. You don't base player rankings or post-season awards based solely on head-to-head match ups. They're not even the most important thing.

I really would have liked to see more JT tonight. Karl went with offense over defense. Considering we were getting killed on the perimeter all night, I dont know what a big difference JT would have made.... But he would have at least grabs some boards and done a better job on D than Williams. And its not like Williams gave us offense either.

Anyways....Hard fought loss. We win a bunch of these games if we had DC and/or Gay on the court.

Yes those are shots good shooters should make, Nik had a wide open look that would have put us up one and he clanked the side of the rim. Ben had two open looks that would have made it a 1 pt game and he clanked both. We really need some consistent shooting out there.

In a close loss, it's easy to blame one or two plays. It's tough, sure. Mistakes happened on both sides of the sidelines.

Looking at the game, sure, it's easy to point the finger at free throws. They simply should have made more of them. Missing a couple shots? That's not what did it. Had Sauce hit the 3, though, Sleep Train would have imploded.

Being out rebounded almost 2-1 when the game was still in doubt? Now you're getting towards a root cause.

I'm not doing this as a critic. I'm doing it as a fan. For me it's not about logic sometimes. Just like LBJ vs Paul Pierce in the playoffs as an example. They went at it one on one. Stuff like that. I want to see grittiness, passion, heart, etc. And yes as a fan when two beasts go at it I want it to be epic. The only advantages AD has in my book is better shotblocking ability and a better team. Cousins has him beat in all other areas.

Cuz may be better, but we really aren't. Cuz is going record breaking here, and we are dropping every game. He needs more serious help. he can make scrubs look decent, but in the end we are still losing. Doesn't have to be Gay, but it needs to be somebody to take the load off.

Many supporting cast members have been gift wrapped an opportunity to take that next step, but they haven't. Right now it needs to be Gay, because that player isn't yet on this roster.

You mean someone like Davis' wingman?

Its fools gold, yes Cousins is a beast playing point center, but we are riding him to the ground just to compete. In a 82 game season you need balance and on some nights Cousins shouldn't have to go for 30 and 20 for us to compete. We are just risking him going down with an injury if we were to play like this all season. I'm not saying Gay should be un tradeable but you really have to get a good deal(2 solid starters, or 1 solid starter and 2 good bench players). Also depends on what we do in the draft. We could go after someone like Winslow or Johnson. Really though this core of Cousins, Gay, Collison, Karl deserve on full training camp with an upgraded supporting cast.

I think someone who could take some of the defensive pressure off Cousins would be great. He picks up fouls precisely because he has to be so dominant at both ends.
Add a veteran SG, (or maybe Ben is seasoned enough by then), and we're in a much better spot.

We're not that far off, if we get the right pieces.

Derrick Williams has so many plays where he simply is clueless out there.

On offense : DMC is in the paint, double-teamed with a third (Tyreke) hovering nearby. Instead of backing away and getting in the opposite corner and wait for the kick-out if DMC gets stopped, DWill chooses to go forward, into the middle of the lane for some inexplicable reason. (BTW - McCallum stayed bolt still on that play, and never sidled down to DMC's side corner 3 to give Demarcus the easy assist. He stayed up top, which is where Omri inexplicably snuck over to from his 5 o'clock position. The whole team seems oblivious as to where to stand for open 3 ptrs. I've never seen a team this braindead on offense - nobody else in the league has this many people incapable of going to the open spots for 3's.)

On defense : DWill has no clue how to block his man out off the rebound. Not only does he not know where his man is, but he doesn't position his body remotely in a place that he could interpose between the rim and his man.
Similarly, what was the point of him lazily pushing AD in the chest while he shot? Does he really think that will affect the shot?

Not that I disagree with the stupidity of such comments VF, but are such comments really against the rules of this forum? I know it ruins the mood but I do think this mod warning is a bit out of place. That's just my humble opinion though, as the mod you're free to enforce the rules as you deem best.
Agreed, I was too careful to say this myself. While being a jerk can cause a person to say "we don't deserve DeMarcus", saying "we don't deserve DeMarcus" doesn't necessarily mean that that person is a jerk.

But mods have special privileges, so they have the final say; can't do anything about that.

He wants them to win. He will make them better so they will win games like this in the future. I personally love the fact that he's gonna get on them tomorrow for what they did wrong.

I believe that its better to keep Gay as a #2 option when Cousins is in and as a #1 option when Cousins is out. We use the Gay isolation or the Cousins post-up, depending on the situation, and then improvise "jazz band" off of that.

The team performs O.K. when Cousins is out for a game, but Gay is in. The intersection of these two talents requires post-ups/isolation while the other one stays on the perimeter/rebounding position.

On the plus side....

...The more dumb plays Williams makes, the less likely we are to resign him!

His dunks are coo....But if we are talking backup 3 going foward, I'm on team Omri.

Cousins may put up better numbers when Gay isn't in but we have a much better shot at winning with him out there. He's a fantastic second option on offense. The ball may stop in his hands but it leads to high percentage scoring plays. I'll take that over the rest of the roster not named Cousins shooting the ball.

I personally don't think we will be serious contenders until Rudy is a third option.

This. Had Rudy been in rather than D-Will at the end of the game, I can't guarantee that he would make a shot but he certainly wouldn't have pulled off Derrick's turnaround airball maneuver with time on the shotclock and Boogie literally two feet away.

DMC was just insane again but the Pelicans made outside shots and we missed at least 3-6 game changing 3's/long 2's.

Also Ray just can't do anything to stop Tyreke, Evans is just the ultimate nightmare match up for him.

Omri had a decent performance as did Ben but Ben missed to many cruical wide open 3's.

With Cousins improved shot blocking I like the idea of Rudy Gay at the 4 if we could get another 3 man like with good size who can switch with Rudy like Wilson Chandler/Marcus Morris/Midds (while bringing Casspi off the bench)I think we could be onto something. If we could draft WCS (or trade for another good shot blocker) I would use him like Karl used McGee off the bench so we have 48mins of shot blocking rather than playing both our shot blockers together.

I'm not a fan of Gay for this team either. That said, this team is better with Gay on it than not. He's really the only other guy that can get his own shot most of the time. But if the Kings move Gay for more complementary pieces that would be very ok with me.

Who would those complimentary pieces be? Guys, who can make open shots and get out of the way, so Cousins had to create for everyone on every possession?

The Kings need at least one dynamic guard that can get his own shot. It's such a huge advantage for the opposing team not having to be concerned with the scoring of the Kings guards. You've got to have at least one guard who makes the opposition toss and turn at night. This group allows them to sleep like a baby (and that includes Collison). Also, if you're a good scoring guard on the opposition, it's such a psychological advantage to know that the guy you are facing is not a bigtime threat. You can concentrate much more energy on the offensive end rather than the defensive end. Heaven forbid if you're a guard who is a mediocre offensive threat and you're going against guys like Curry, Paul, Parker or Westbrook in the playoffs.

I don't know concretely who they (or he) might be. In the abstract, if it's one player that we get, I'd be looking to get a three who is not the one on one scorer of Gay, but who is better at defense, passing, and rebounding and can hit the open 3. The other idea, which I know is not popular because it is trading the present value of Gay for future value of youngins: Trade Gay for one top 4 pick and another pick in the 8 through 5 area in this draft, as well as a good vet. That would give you 3 picks in the top 8. Then you could really have a major infusion of athletic basketball talent. Then you might get your WCS and maybe Hezonja and get a top 4 player in this draft who is going to have both an offensive and defensive impact. No doubt you lose the experience of Gay with this latter scenario, but you gain in talent. I just feel there's no free lunch - you've got to give up something to get something and Gay is really the only something we've got other than Cousins. (I guess Collison is something, but not a major something).

I dunno, man, just, like, players... who compliment, like, the system or whatever.
