NBA does not want teams to play defense. Casual fans like offense. More scoring means more $$$.
Your absolutely right. Stern believed that fans came to games to see players score, not defend. But it goes beyond that. Stern was the man that believed in the star system. Therefore he loved the Michael Jordan's and Kobe Bryant's of the world, and he wanted the game to highlight their abilities. It was no secret that the team he disliked the most was the Spurs. He thought that their brand of basketball was boring. And his on going feud with Pop's didn't help either. He thought Kobe going one on one and scoring 50 points was what people wanted to see. Of course I disagree with him, but he never consulted me. I'm sure that the old bad boys Detriot Pistons team must have kept Stern up all night with indigestion.
