Freeagent class of 2012. If season is lost:

Hall of Famer
Although the lockout and the potential of losing the entire season is extremely depressing, there are a few rays of sunshine bursting through the darkness. You know me, ever the optimist! I ran across this article listing who will be available in the freeagent class of 2012, if there's no freeagent period for 2011 because of the season being cancelled. It could well be the best freeagent class ever.

Being a Kings fan, 2012 could be a terrific year. We might have a new arena under way ( I pray) and still be loaded with freeagent designated money shopping in a store loaded with some of the top freeagents. Here's the article!

On top of that, with the season cancelled, I'm assuming that the draft order will be the same with perhaps another lottery. The Kings can't do any worse than they did last time, and the odds are that they will do better. Add in that this next draft will be one of the most talented and deep drafts in the last 10 years.

So in the short term, its painful to miss a season, but the end result could be a huge bonus for the Kings. Just saying!

Yeah, on top of the huge free-agent double class, we have a stacked draft...the NBA landscape could look very, very different by the end of the 2012-2013 season. I'm not sure the draft order will be the same with a re-run of the lottery, though. After the lockout the NHL gave their teams lotto odds based on their cumulative record over the past 3 or 4 years, and my best guess is that a similar system will be put in place for the NBA. The good news for us is that we'll have great odds in a system like that!

Yeah, I almost alluded to that. I had it in my notes and then forgot it. But your right, we should come out smelling like a rose either way. We might actually come out better using the NHL system.

I think I should remind folks that the Kings included a first round pick in the J J Hickson trade. Its top 14 protected in 2012, top 13 in 2013, and so on. If its not gone by 2017, the it turns into a 2nd round pick. So the season being cancelled insures that we'll have a first round pick in one of the deepest drafts in a long time. Of course missing the playoffs does as well. Bitter pill either way!

Larry Coon thinks they will factor in playoff appearances, first overall picks, and cumulative records over the three years. So as an example Washington would get marked down a tad for winning the John Wall lottery.

Minnesota has a worse record over the last three years and has not had a first pick. Other than that the Kings would probably be in the 2nd most favorable position.

Not that I'm wishing for the season to be canceled, but that would be a nice bonus. Of course if we start second, you just know that after the lottery we'll end up 5th. By the way, Chad Ford had a funny tweet tonight. It was about UCLA's center Josh Smith, who has had troubles with his weight in the past.

UCLA versus Chaminade up next at the @EASportsMauiInv Josh Smith looks like he ate (Eddy) Curry for lunch.
