2007 revisited, ESPNS Mock Draft 4.0 posted tue 6-19

They have us taking Hawes. problem is that it looks like we get Hawes based on Y falling to the bulls and Noah being taken in the top 10. both of which i personaly dont think are strong bets. Noah could very well fall to us or past us. and Y could go as high as #5. i cant belive that Hawes could go to the bulls over us because we beat the freakin clippers! and then got screwed with the tie breaker.(i hate you MUSS!) also J. Wright dropped to 14th.

Again if we did walk away with Hawes, got another first round pick and drafted Jason Smith i could not explain how happy i'd be. we need to get Bigs this draft. next year there will be Guards. also if we could add dorell wright and filler for Artest. we got a solid really young team. i really like the idea of playing 2 centers Hawes and Miller together. its like the super poor mans twin towers. Miller would play well at the 4 on offense. and could guard the slowest man on defense (so probably 5)

Bibby / Price / Douby
Martin / Garcia
D. Wright / Salmons
Miller / Smith
Hawes / Williams

I think this is a 8th seed team. but maybe this also puts us back in the lotto for a PG. i didnt put SAR or Thomas cause im sure one will not be back(likely SAR)

Is Hawes the next Brad Miller or not.? somebody in the know tell me. I would be very, very nervous picking a player that is close in skills to Brad Miller.

well hes not considered to be super stud athlete. but he makes up for it wit natural talent and skills. hes got a solid post game (so no not like Brad) and hes got great footwork wit a nice jumper. hes not a shot blocker but i think will be a much better defender than brad.

He's nothing like Miller... the kid can actually move. Nice little fade away jumper. I really wouldn't mind getting him at all (along with Julian Wright via trade).

Hawes does have a very nice offensive game, he actually operates very similar to Tim Duncan in the post (not similar in talent, just in play). He has a good array of post moves and can use the mid range jumper if he is doubled in the post. He also passes very well, hence the Brad Miller comparison. The thing that worries me though is that he is not as strong as he should be and his game may not translate well to the NBA.

Also, his defense, shot blocking, and rebounding are all way below average for a center. Even though he has a nice offensive game he is slow and unathletic and would really slow down a team that tries to run and gun. I'm definitely in favor of getting a center to move Miller to PF, but with those two guys on the front line we'll never get a rebound.

It's a shame the Bulls are in front of us in the draft as they want similar players, that's causing most other teams that want those players to talk trade with them as opposed to us.

I was unexcited about how Hawes did on the prederaft physical tests. It kind of confirmed his reputation as unathletic.

What he did well: Hawes measured a hair away from 7’1’’ and 244 lbs. That’ about it.

What he struggled with: You know you hurt your stock when the assistant coaches running the combine have a higher vertical than you do. Hawes’ 29’’ vertical did not compare to the big men he was competing against. So even though he can’t jump, he’s really strong, right? Not quite. Hawes performed a disappointing 9 bench reps and compounded it by running the slowest sprint time (3.51) and one of the most pedestrian lane drills (11.88).

I'm hoping the Kings don't draft Hawes. Although there is a glaring need for a big man, they would be better off drafting the BPA and plug him in along the way. I'd much rather see us grabbing Julian Wright or Jeff Green if any of the projected top 10 don't fall.

Hawes is NOT the next great white hope.

Ah, good. Another unathletic big guy who doesn't block shots and rebound. He should fit in just perfectly.

:p

I've seen Hawes play and I don't think he's another Brad Miller, the main reason being that he is a very good post player. I've seen him demolish teams in the post. So, right now, at age +/- 20 he's a better post player than Miller at age +/- 30. He's very aggressive. What I really like about him is that he ATTACKS teams. Unlike Miller, you don't have to tell him to be aggressive: he IS aggressive.

Exactly what I was thinking and going to post until I read your take. Plus, he isn't as "athletic" as Bogut. Don't we REALLY need an athletic, shot-blocking defender? Oh Lord, please don't allow this to happen to the Kings. ;)

NO WAY! We don't need Hawes. According to the Espn Video Analysis...they said Hawes was the worst athlete in the draft, but had great shooting and passing abilities.

Uh...hellloooo! I think we have that kind of player already!!

We need more athlete's on this team. No more softies!!

Petrie said he want's to get better defensively. I say we pick up the best athlete and best player available, when it's the Kings turn to pick.

Well, unless its part of some bigger plan in which we get rid of Brad for someone with some defense and athleticism I'd say no to Hawes.

I have to ask the question about taking the Best Player Available. In the NFL Draft you always here people say don't draft for need just take the BPA. Is or should that be the case in the NBA too? Just wondering if the same strategy applies for teams in putting together their draft boards in the NBA.

If it is the case and he is the highest guy on our board at that time we pick then we should. If not, then we probably shouldn't.

by the time we draft,Hawes is the best pick and best big, BY FAR THE BEST. it should be known that the tests dont mean anything Monta Ellis last years MIP over kevin martin scored as one of the worst athletes. actualy some of the worst athletes in this test have went on to become studs. i think in some cases its actualy fine that they scored bad. that just means theres a chance they will drop, when really they shouldnt. can they ball or not thats all that matters.

Now if we trade down and get Smith and Sean Williams i would be pretty stoked on that. if the team we traded down with hooks us up wit somethin on top of those guys. that makes sense.

but at the 10 spot Hawes is the best pick. if we dont want him we trade up or down.

i guess im open to Noah if he makes it to us but man is his shot ugly. and his post play is sorta raw and ugly also.

I would literally CRY if we took Hawes... Seriously. We do not need this guy. We need a guy like Jason Smith. Someone who is an athlete. Someone who can rebound. Someone who can play both PF/C and actualy be able to guard either position.

Either Noah, or Smith would fit that role. I would rather have Noah, but if we can't get him than Smith will do. I would love to have them both! BUT NO HAWES! HE IS A BUST!

If we pick Noah I will cry. The guy has no offense and is an arrogant punk IMO. Anyone going out to Arco to the draft party and watching the draft on the big screen next Thursday? I think I might go out there. I went to the one back in 1996 when we were all chanting Wallace Wallace Wallace for John Wallace and Geoff Petrie comes out and says we have drafted Predrag Stojakovic and the whole arena was like who? and started booing.

i like the idea of picking hawes, because he has size, great post skills, and a lot of potential, being that hes only 19 or 20 years old.
