ESPN Mag - Reef

Dog On It!
Got my ESPN mag today and this article on Reef was in it. I couldn't find it online, so I typed it up.

Sweet Surrender ~ ChrisBroussard

Commotion reigned in the Kings’ locker room as a swarm of journalists descended - as usual - on Ron Artest. Five feet away, a former Dream Teamer, former All-Star, former 20-point scorer sat in anonymity, munching popcorn.

Shareef Abdur-Rahim is content to hang on the periphery. Over his 10 NBA seasons, Reef has become known as a man who can do without the limelight. On a less positive note, he’s also been known as the league’s biggest loser.

Seven hundred thirty-four and counting. That’s how many games the 29-year old big man has played without making the playoffs. No one lese is within a 140 of that string.

Thanks to his new teammate, Artest, the streak is starting to look like history. But now, with his best chance at the post-season, not only is Abdur-Rahim not a star, he isn’t even a starter.

Bittersweet? Hardly. “It feels good just to be playing for something,” Abdur-Rahim says. “Some situations I’ve been in, the season’s over by now and the guys are already thinking about where they’re going after the last game. You could run all the plays for me, give me all the honors and all the press, but I wouldn’t want to be back in that situation for anything."

It’s hard to pin the run of ineptitude solely on the man in the middle of it. Five seasons in Vancouver, three in Atlanta and one and a half with the knuckleheads in Portland would keep anyone out of the playoffs. But he’ll take the heat all the same. “I was the leader on a lot of those teams, the highest paid, the best player,” he says. “so if people want to blame me, I’ll take it. But it won’t kill my spirit or deflate who I am as a player.”

Reef was sure his streak would end when he signed with Sacramento last summer. After all, the Kings had made it to the playoffs seven times running. But although he shot almost 50% and averaged 17 and 6 out of the gate as a starter, the Kings were 10-17. Was the curse of Reef real?

In late December, an inadvertent elbow by Trail Blazer Zach Randolph broke Abdur-Rahim’s jaw. He returned 10 games later with it wired shut, but eventually lost his job to Kenny Thomas. The Kings were winning in his absence, so Reef now is chipping in 8.7 ppg off the bench. Coach Rick Adelman hasn’t ruled out starting him, but the more the Kings win (they’re 22-14 with Reef off the bench, 18-10 since Artest arrived on Jan. 31), the more unlikely it is. So be it. “I just want to contribute and help the team win,” Abdur-Rahim says. “Everything else is irrelevant.”

And if anyone should know about irrelevant, it’s Reef.

I wish every player(or player-fan) on this team has this mentality. I really admire this man.

Reef is awesome, it sounds like everything playmaker said about him wasn't true. I'm glad that he would rather win than start, really glad. He's not a selfish player.

i've been one of the unfortunate few who had been thinking it better to not make the playoffs and get a lottery pick. this article is just one more reason to say f*** no to that. It will be nice to see Shareef in the playoffs, and in a Kings uniform.

I don't care if we go in and get bounced in the 1st round. I want Reef to make the playoffs so this "curse of Shareef" crap can stop!!!!

It was great to see how pumped up he was in the game last night when he got the bucket while getting fouled, plus getting to go to the line. You can see how much he wants to win and get to the playoffs.

I've been thinking lately that Reef gets too much grief here.

He's solid, not showy. Good decision maker. I'm never nervous when he's got the ball.

Reef doesn't get grief. What happens is a couple of people are so over the top about what THEY want to assign as SAR's feelings, beliefs, etc. that it appears as though we're dogging on him when we're actually trying to get those few to take it down a notch.

;)

If you want to be picky (or controversial), you could say Shareef cares more for religion and family than basketball (he's not one to go diving for loose balls), and that attitude may be detrimental in such a competitive league.

Reef has got a lot of heart and passion for this game and this team. I truly admire this man who wants to play and goes in with his jaw wired shut and battles. He is a warrior. Already a champion in my eyes. If you can add faith and the love for family into the package....Wow. That's one heck of a man.

Reefs a pro. A champion? Hardly. But a pro.

I'm actually interested to see what happens this summer, because contrary to popular myth Reef HAS had problems with each of his previous employers. So I want to see what happens if it looks like he'll be a bencher again. Was not the plan when he came here. But Brad/Reef is simply too soft to stand in the NBA. Reef wasn't happy coming off the bench in Portland. Turned down offers from the Heat and Spurs top come off the bench for contenders. So if it looks as if he'll be the 6th man here, what happens? Being a pro and not raising a stink midseason is not the same thing as being happy and holding his tongue in the summer. Be interesting.

I totally agree with u brick, if they tell sar that he is going to becoming off the bench next year, in my opinion he will be the same hell raising sar he was in portland (the offseason before he left). Sar is just keeping his mouth shut because the team is winning, like he should. And also i don't expect Brad, Sar, and Thomas all being on kings together next year, i see at least one of them being gone next year.

Would you be upset if it was brad, and not sar or kenny that was the one gone?

who would we trade brad for?

bonzi, kenny and corliss for kg and hudson(jaric) be'd nice but sar would still be a bench player... so i'd gues you could throw in sar instead of kenny....

If Brad left, i would have no problem with it at all as long as we replace him with a def center. Brad is just to soft, i have nothing against him and he has alot of talent but he is just to soft. Weak post game and def player, and somewhat rebounding makes him what he is. If we replaced him with a guy who could hit a wide open jumper (when need), block shots, rebound, play solid D, and thinks D before offence to go along with Bibby, bonzi or K-mart, Artest and sar that would be great.

Reef reminds me a little of Corliss Williamson, and that's a good thing. He is a big talented guy that has a very pleasant demeanor. Ron, Bonzi, Corliss, Kenny, and Reef. Maybe all our big talented guys can get into the playoffs and scare some people?

I would not be surprised if Reef has finally abandoned his emotional fix on being "a starter". There is nothing like time, a little humiliation, combined with hope and an improved team spirit, to modify a man's long-established behavior and way of looking at things. Such things happen to most men as they get older. :)

Ya think?

;)

Dude, you're talking about an amalgamation of players, not one.
