If that really was the case they wouldn't start Evans at PG... Just saying... That's not his biggest strength.
Evans' biggest strength may not be his passing ability. Evans' biggest strength may not be his open-court ballhandling. Evans' biggest strength may not be his decision making. These points have been raised before,
ad nauseum.
We haven't seen any of this yet at the NBA level, though, and he's only 19, so there's actually hope that these aspects of his game improve.
On the other hand, if you look at our roster, designing an offensive and defensive system that allows both Kevin Martin and Tyreke Evans to be on the floor together for significant minutes would very likely maximize what we can get out of our roster. As others have said, it allows Evans to take advantage of mismatches on both ends of the floor (if he guards a smaller PG) or gives us additional defensive options on the SG (if we need a "Kobe-Stopper", and no I don't think Tyreke could stop Kobe, certainly not yet, but you get the point). And whether he's a traditional point guard or not, playing Tyreke Evans in the primary ballhandling position is pretty much the only way to do that.
So you don't have to call him a "point guard". Call him a "blunt guard" for all I care. But unless it turns out to be an unmitigated disaster, he's going to be playing a lot of minutes next to Martin and acting as the primary ballhandler when he does. The positional stuff, and the roster, will sort itself out over the next couple of years. For now, Evans is going to be playing the point and that's almost certainly going to be the way to maximize our roster as it stands.
