ESPN gives 'Reke no votes for ROY

You cant base Evans being a longshot on what a bunch of colunmists say in august. I like Flynn just as much as the next person, but i think in the NBA Tyreke has the ability to produce more. The ROY is usually the guy with the best numbers. In my opinion Evans doesnt have much to compete against for minutes and it looks as though he'll have the ball quite often. With his ability to get to the basket id say Evans has a fair shot at ROY. Id say its Between Griffin and Evans. I dont see any other rookies seperating themselves enough for consideration unless Thabeet is the next Mutumbo.
P.S.- The players dont fit into the system. The coaching staff fits a system around the players.
BEAUTIFUL. What ESPN fails to understand, or their analysts at least, is that there is a whole new coaching staff with a blank slate to incorporate a system. You never know what is going to happen on either side of the ball with a new staff until you see it implemented on a game to game basis.

This really is a great point.

Good when it's true, less good when it's not. If you're the Lakers, and you just got the 30th pick or whatever, he needs to learn to play the triangle, or he's gonna get traded. Presumably they tried to draft a triangle-compatible player. If you're the 4th pick, and headed for the rebuilding Kings, the story may be different. But it's not an inviolate rule or anything. Coaches do the opposite all the time.

I certainly agree with that but I was saying it was a good point applied to the KINGS. With a team like this and a new coach, the coach should build the best system for his team that minimizes weaknesses and maximizes strengths. I am happy to have Westphal because I believe he will do this.

If that really was the case they wouldn't start Evans at PG... Just saying... That's not his biggest strength.

We have to bear in mind that to be considered ROY you have to consider a lot of factors that ultimately determines the over-all performance of the player - most obvious of which are talent, playing time ( fitness to his team ), and FO/coaching staffs' support for the player. I am pretty sure those analaysts used them in deciding who will get the ROY.

Will Evans have all those in him?

IMO, Evans has that undeniable TALENT to give Griffin a good fight for ROY. But knowing how slowly this Kings organization develop their players, Evans wouldn't have a chance against Griffin. Just like some of the fans here who subscribe to the old thinking of slowly developing players, Petrie/Westphal will find a way to retard Evans' development.

I hope I can be proven wrong, because I hate to see such preparation from the Evans family just go down the drain.

That is your opinion which everyone should learn to respect.

Unfortunately though for you, not everyone sees it that way especially in this forum. A lot more people finds it more logical to try another tactic which maximizes the utilization of Evans strength. A lot considers using Evans to create mismatches at point guard position which may actually be better for the team. And that you should call maximizing Evans' biggest strength.

Evans' biggest strength may not be his passing ability. Evans' biggest strength may not be his open-court ballhandling. Evans' biggest strength may not be his decision making. These points have been raised before, ad nauseum.

We haven't seen any of this yet at the NBA level, though, and he's only 19, so there's actually hope that these aspects of his game improve.

On the other hand, if you look at our roster, designing an offensive and defensive system that allows both Kevin Martin and Tyreke Evans to be on the floor together for significant minutes would very likely maximize what we can get out of our roster. As others have said, it allows Evans to take advantage of mismatches on both ends of the floor (if he guards a smaller PG) or gives us additional defensive options on the SG (if we need a "Kobe-Stopper", and no I don't think Tyreke could stop Kobe, certainly not yet, but you get the point). And whether he's a traditional point guard or not, playing Tyreke Evans in the primary ballhandling position is pretty much the only way to do that.

So you don't have to call him a "point guard". Call him a "blunt guard" for all I care. But unless it turns out to be an unmitigated disaster, he's going to be playing a lot of minutes next to Martin and acting as the primary ballhandler when he does. The positional stuff, and the roster, will sort itself out over the next couple of years. For now, Evans is going to be playing the point and that's almost certainly going to be the way to maximize our roster as it stands.

He's fits our drive and finish/drive and kick position. That's a new position I just made up. It should be in wickipedia shortly. After that Webster's. He'll get plenty of opportunities to do just that.

So instead of point guard, Reke is gonna be our "drive guard"? I kinda like that.

:)
