whenever you think keeping GP around might be a good idea, remind yourself of the offseason of 2011 and realise that he can't go fast enough.

Exactly. People keep saying that it's all the Maloofs' fault (I agree for the most part), but GP has his share of blame too. As many have said here, it wasn't a matter of not spending money. He spent it, in the worst possible way. When you give Hayes 5 millions, Outlaw 3 millions, Salmons 7 millions, you should understand that you could get an elite players for that amount instead of three useless players on the wrong end of their careers.
GP looks to have lost his touch in drafting too. Ok, maybe Jimmer was the Maoofs' choice, but what about T-Rob? Barnes and Drummond where there, and they were perfect fits for this team.
Another note: there's always a market for teams willing to take on salary, often expiring, at deadline to help teams avoid Lux tax for some minor asset. If you need to reach minimum salary don't do it at the start of the season. In the end the gap will be spread among your own players if nothing works out - I'm sure they would be happy. That's why Outlaw signing was especially mind-boggling.
For me it boils down to this. 2011 offseason, on the heels of Mavs winning championship, Kings FO and Maloofs say they want to add shooters. Technically they achieved that by resigning Thornton and drafting Jimmer. The trade was absolutely stupid, but at least the FO achieved what it set out to do, in theory at least. Come 2012 offseason and Petrie says we want to add shotblocking and perimeter shooting (so apparently the goal of previous offseason wasn't achieved eh?). While cursing and swearing for not simply re-signing Dalembert, I breathe a sigh of relief that at least Petrie's realized his mistake and can see the flaws in our team. What happens? We draft Thomas Robinson of all people, neither a shotblocker nor someone who can spread the floor. IIRC there were some reports of talks with Dorell Wright and Ryan Andersen, but whatever it is the result was no shotblocking and no outside shooting. Thankfully the shooting problem has been alleviated slightly with Patterson's ability to hit corner 3s, but it's still not ideal to have your PF in that role.
Point is, the FO set out to accomplish certain goals during the offseason and didn't even come close to accomplishing them. It wasn't a "hey we tried, who knew he sucked" kinda thing as in 2011, it was an absolute failure. And it's not like the opportunity to draft Drummond wasn't there either.

From those names that are still interested in the job, he is the one that is probably the best gamble. Wallace, Layden, Sund, Dunleavy, etc are all failed GMs. Morway is probably the best of the experienced lot but his time at Indiana ended on a sour note. He did finish as a runner up for the GM role at Portland last year but still. Kenny Smith is just a joke, D'Alessandro might be a good for contracts and salary cap management but I am not sold on his basketball acumen.
Morway and Schlenk combo might just be the best we can come up with. We simply CANNOT afford to make any errors this off-season in terms of roster. We are at a very critical time of taking a direction with the franchise! Our main guys are up for renewal this off-season or next and there is very little if any salary cap room this off-season. Crutial time ahead. Get this GM thing wrong and we become the Clippers of old. Cousins will eventually sour and walk away and we will be stuck as a pennial lottery team looking for a franchise center piece. We got him but we managed to make a wrong move after a wrong move to blow up all the cap space on a pile of rubbish!

Jimmer was clearly a Maloof pick but the school of thought with Robinson was that JT was a free agent, we needed a ready made replacement in case he walked and Robinson was widely considered as a ready made player and Drummond was a long term prospect. School of thought was very wrong.

That is pretty much expected. Take a look at his history in New York, he absolutely made one wrong move after the other.
He joined San Antonio less than 12 months ago and I can't help but feel like it's to give himself another chance at getting a shot somewhere else because it's pretty obvious that even the janitors from Spurs have a chance of getting a GM job in the league.

Wouldn't be surprised if they settle for Wallace. Which would really disappoint me. I'd rather give it to Schlenk or D'Alesandro over him.

02: drafts Nene and trades him along with M. Jackson, Camby to Denver for McDyess fresh off major knee surgery, a 2nd rounder and Frank Williams. McDyess ended up playing only 18 games for them in 2 years.
03: Drafts Sweetney over David West, Diaw, Pietrus, Ridnour, Outlaw, Barbosa and Josh Howard
Also took Lampe in 2nd round over Mo Williams and Kyle Korver
In 1999 he resigns Sprewell for 5ry $62 mil.
In 2000 he traded Ewing for Glen Rice, Longley and Travis Knight and Vernon Maxwell.
In 2001 he traded Erick Strickland, a first and 2nd round pick to Grizzlies for Othella Harrington. (first round pick turned out to be Jamal Tinsley)
In the 01/02 season he resigned Allan Houston for 6yr $100 mil. He also traded Rice and Bogues in a 3 team deal that landed them Howard Eisley and Shandon Anderson. That deal put them on the hook for 6yrs each at a combined $77 mil, which was about $47 mil more worth of contracts that they traded away and put them deeper against the cap.
In the 03/04 season he traded Sprewell in a 4 team trade that landed them Van Horn. Signed Mutombo to 2yr deal.
He inherited a good 50 win team in 1999 that was already built. Two years later they were below .500 and didn't hit .500 again until 2011.

Chris Wallace has never demonstrated an eye for talent in the draft and giving that the Kings have a top ten pick this year and likely will next year that's a crucial component to the job.

I really don't think it is. Petrie drafted Evans and Cuz, that alone puts him far above anything Layden has done. And though he signed a few bad contracts, none were crippling to the extent that Layden's were. KT was a terrible contract but it wasn't crippling.

Amick says Wallace, Morway and layden at top of ranadive's list. If they hire layden, it will be a pathetic start to the new era.

Layden has to be pure smoke... I hope... Again, I have been disappointed so far in this GM search at the quality we have been associated with.. I was hoping there would be exciting, accomplished names fighting each other for this opportunity..
At this point I'm just waiting to hear that the decision is down to Layden and dark horse candidate David Khan.
And while any comment promoting David Khan as a GM candidate has to be dripping with sarcasm, the sad reality is that I'd honestly prefer him to Layden.
I maintain that Ranadive & co deserve every chance and bit of goodwill I can muster given that they saved my Kings. But at the same time if what Amick is reporting is accurate and the top candidates are all retreads with mediocre to awful track records it makes it hard to be very enthusiastic for the time being.

As an aside, Scott Layden was an unmitigated disaster in New York. Now could some of that disaster have been the meddling of Dolan, perhaps. But people outside this region may not understand just how bad he was. At everything. He once traded rookie Nene and prime Marcus Camby for the ghost of Anotnio McDyess's knees. He kept on trading for washed up former names in the last year or tow of their careers. He signed Alan Houston to that $100mil contract. He drafted Michael Sweetney. He replaced Jeff Van Gundy with Don Chaney.
This could be a brilliant strategic move by Vivek -- threaten 'em with Layden, and then they'll be happy/relieved when you sign Chris Wallace instead. Or possibly:
