Monta Ellis of the Golden State Warriors was named the winner of the 2006-07 NBA Most Improved Player Award, the NBA announced today. The annual award is presented to a player who has made a dramatic improvement from the previous season or seasons.

Ellis received a total of 352 points, including 47 first-place votes, from a panel of 129 sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada. The Sacramento KingsKevin Martin finished second with 349 points (44 first-place votes) followed by the Utah Jazz ’s Deron Williams with 101 points (13 first-place votes). Players were awarded five points for each first-place vote, three points for each second-place vote and one point for each third place vote received. This is the closest finish in the history of the award since 1990-91 when Scott Skiles of Orlando edged out Kevin Gamble of Boston by four votes

After averaging 6.8 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.6 assists and .415 shooting for the Warriors in 2005-06, Ellis increased his scoring by 9.7 points (16.5 ppg) – the largest increase in the NBA this season -- to go along with his averages of 3.2 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 1.71 steals. Starting 53 of the 77 games he appeared in, Ellis reached double figures in scoring 68 times, including 24 games of 20 or more points. The 6-3 guard recorded three or more steals 20 times and had at least five steals three times, including a career-high six at Seattle (March 17).

Selected by the Warriors in the second round of the 2005 NBA Draft (40th overall), Ellis was second only to Chris Paul (17.2 ppg) of the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets in scoring among players from that Draft class. Ellis also noticed a significant increase in his assist numbers as he dished five or more assists 33 times, including a career-high 13 at the Los Angeles Clippers (Feb. 24).

Total BS. 'Nuff said.
It sucks for Kevin, and I'm sure that the fact that Ellis helped lead a Warriors resurgence while the Kings stunk this season factored in, but Ellis and Williams were both strong candidates, so calling it Total BS isn't really fair to Ellis who edged out a very strong field this year.

Who cares about fair? This was probably Kevin's only shot at winning an award in his career, and he just barely got edged out. And it's probably only because the Warriors made the playoffs and the Kings didn't. It sucks.

This was the closest vote in the history of the award. I think Martin has every reason to be very proud of his season; I know I'm proud for him.

Yes, but its not like Ellis didn't earn it, because he did. He had a great season too, as did Williams. This is a fairly trivial award. Its not like Kevin is a lesser player because he didn't win it.

Who cares, this is the most frivilous award in sports. All it means was you outplayed the suckies from last season by more than the next guy.

What matters to me is that Kevin has the better career than Ellis and I think he will. I think it's easier to improve ballhandling/passing than it is to improve the deep ball shot. Martin is LIGHT years ahead of Ellis behind the arc.

And I'm sure the people on the Warriors boards are very proud of Ellis. I think Kevin could have easily won this award, which does mean a lot to the players BTW, if he had a better coach but that's neither here nor there...

;)

Yeah, it was just that Ellis was a lesser player last season. But I still think Kevin should have won the award.

My point in calling it a trivial award is that MIP is not something that is going to stick with a player throughout his entire career the way "6th Man of the Year" does and its a loooooooong way from MVP. Of course players appreciate being recognized, but this award wasn't going to salvage our lost season. I'm actually glad we won't be winning any awards for this turd of a season, its another wake up call for the Maloofs and anyone else thinking a quick fix is possible that this franchise has fallen off the map and needs a major reboot.

we'll just have to see it differently. I would have loved to be able to see Martin get recognition for everything he did despite all the hurdles, including a coach who benched him for significant periods of time for virtually no reason.

It's not a team award; it's an individual achievement award and, considering how little most people thought of Martin when he first arrived, I think it's pretty significant that he was even in the running.

I see why Monta got some votes, but, again, this proves the institutional, league-wide bias against small market teams that we all know exists. Rationalize this however you like, but Martin was robbed.

I'm sorry that Kevin didn't get it. :(

I think it just goes to show that the NBA voters are a little more on top of things than the journalist voters. Kevin slumped a little as the season wore on, and while part of that was undoubtedly fatigue, I think that enough of it was goofy coaching that, under another coach, he could surely have swung 2 votes away from Ellis. All you have to do to see how far off the mark journalists can be is to look in the Bee sports section, and if Bee writers can get matters related to the Kings wrong, what will writers in New Jersey do?

It's not terrible, like all-star voting, but it's not entirely different, either.

No need to put "only" there. I can't blame someone who voted for him based on his team making the playoffs; I'd probably agree with them with that.

It is what it is and sincere congrats to Ellis, but...

I imagine if Don Nelson had been the coach of the Kings this year, Martin could have had an even better season and won this honor outright.

Feel annoyed that Kevin didn't get the award after all the hard work and improvement. But, Ellis did improve greatly so I think it could have gone either way. I think Martin deserved it more, but the fact that he didn't doesn't take anything away from the great season Martin's had and we will still all be proud of him. He keeps working hard, he's only going to improve.

Well there goes our ONLY shot at having SOMETHING to show for this season. We were the only team not to have someone representing us at the All Star festivities, missed the playoffs, missed the lottery, etc. Wow is just keeps getting better. At least we were the first to fire our coach. Funny I saw him at the gym today sporting a Memphis Grizzlies t-shirt as was his girlfriend. Bibby and Artest were there too, kind of weird dynamic happening there.

It is like we have just been invisible this year in the NBA.

this is crap. partly due to the fact that htis is one of the most ambiguous awards to be handed out in the nba. do you factor in season success? who actually "improved" the most? whats the jump... from a nobody to a somebody? or a semi nobody to one of the most efficient scorers in the league?

this is all venting and doenst make sense. im so pissed.

Not that it's a consolation, but the other day Grant said on his show that a poll taken by the leagues General Managers voted Kevin MIP.

It was a really close vote (could have gone either way) and doesn't take anything away from Kevin's break-out season.

To tell the truth, I think Ellis earned it. He is definitely the better defensive player, as well as better at passing. Sure, Kevin Martin is a great shooter and is extremely efficient, but he is lacking everywhere else.

Ellis also shot a better field goal percentage than KMart (though did worse with 3 point shooting), and still had great stats even though he averaged less minutes and didn't start all of the games. He will also be known for helping the Warriors make the playoffs, and the Kings did not make it this year.

Ellis definitely earned it, don't take that away from him.

Ellis doesn't play defense, where did you get the idea that he did? And Ellis averages like 3 turnovers per game... not really a better passer than Kevin he's just a combo guard so he handles the ball more. Put him on the Kings and his stats are like 13 PPG 3 assists. Playing in Don Nelson's offense inflates his stats so much dude.

I thought Ellis earned it as well -- he was a nobody last year, and a major factor on a playoff team this year. Certainly could have gone to Kevin with no complaints, but calling it B.S. to award it to a guy who jumps from a 6.8ppg player to a 17ppg player or whatever is kind of silly.

And realistically, Kevin probably lost it with those last couple of months -- he shot something like 42% over the last 20-30 games..

Me, I think it's BS. I don't care what ya'll say.. Martin imo earned it. Frmo 10ppg to 20ppg is pretty damn good. Esp for a young guy like Martin.

Shoul dhave ben Martin #1, Ellis #2, and Williams #3.
