Draft position thread

Doesn't it seem unlikely that the Clipps and Golden State are going to finish in the bottom seven? Clipps have too much talent. Warrior will have Ellis coming back in the 2nd half. These teams have got to start improving!:)

as much as it pains me to say this and it's something I never thought I'd resort to, but here's to another 8+ game losing streak.

God I hate myself right now. But I just have come to the realization that it truly is neccesary.

Okay, there were a few important games tonight, so another update. We have some real competition for the cellar.

1. OKC 2-21 .087
2. LAC 4-17 .190
3. Min 4-17 .190
4. Was 4-15 .211
5. Sac 6-16 .273
6. GSW 7-15 .318
7. Mem 7-15 .318
8. Cha 7-15 .318
9. Ind 7-14 .333
10.Mil 9-14 .391

I hope you guys don't get offended guys. Just take this thing as something like a joke. And for me it is a very weird feeling I am having whenever I visit this thread and that I think it is funny.

Whenever I visit this thread I feel the same way as though I'm observing people who are so desperate in life that they have to sell their souls to the demon. :p

Sorry guys. But I think this is really funny. Please, one of the moderators just delete this post if it is offending. I don't mean to offend - just funny. :p

Okay, first the bad news... we just went from .238 to .272.

The good news, aside from beating the Lakers for the first time in 2 years, preventing a franchise record home losing streak, and so on, is that it didn't change our position, we were in good enough shape before that we're still #5. Minnesota found a way to choke to the Clippers, so we never made it to #4. Then again, that makes the #2 spot seem attainable...

1. OKC: 2-20 (.091)
2. LAC: 4-17 (.190)
3. Min: 4-16 (.200)
4. Was: 4-15 (.211)
5. Sac: 6-16 (.273)
6. GSW: 6-15 (.286)
7. Mem: 6-15 (.286)
8. Cha: 7-14 (.333)
9. Ind: 7-13 (.350)
10.Mil: 9-14 (.391)

The last playoff spot in the West is currently held by a .591 team, with a .550 team at #9, so we can keep on forgetting about the post-season.

In closing, I'll just say...

GO PINGS!!!
(But not during Lakers games!)

It is like winning is no longer a value/virtue anymore and it feels kinda weird.

It's like yahoo.....the Kings WON....then....ooops....I can't celebrate coz the devil might me see. :p

Also, at the same time that it is funny/weird.......it is also very very painful.

I can feel the pain in this post. :o

We do not get Atlanta's second round pick this year, either. We got it last year. His name was Sean Singletary.

True, which indirectly landed us Donte Greene, Beno Udrih and Bobby Brown.

Had singletary still been on the roster, NO BROWN.

He was dealt in part of the Greene deal. AND we were able to sign Beno.

So the Bibby Trade results are kinda mixed so far, but looking solid.

Did you ever see, "Damned Yankees"? You might get some takers for the protagonist in, "Damned Kings". You've got to do what you've got to do....:D

Offering an opinion on the Internet is like peeing into the ocean; anyone who got worked up would be attaching way too much weight to it.

After this recent trade, Charlotte is no "competition" for a top 5 draft slot.

Seeing how narrowly they lost to Dallas (in Dallas) tonight, I have to agree. I don't think Washington will keep up their linning ways either, although I wish Arenas would hurry up and heal.

Only real update of the night, Charlotte and Washington both lost, dropping to .304 and .200 respectively. No change in rankings.

Tonight's game was absolutely no indication. Bell and Diaw were not in uniform. Surprisingly, this was the same Bobcats sans Richardson.

I'm not so surprised, Richardson's not been doing so well this year. His shooting's fine, but his rebounds, assists, steals and blocks are all career lows so far this year. I was thinking they might get perked up a bit by letting him go.

But I think we can agree that the new blood they have coming in will help a lot.

We move into 4th.

In an unexpected upset, The Clippers wost to Houston. A few other recent games have changed things, too, so time for an update.

1. OKC who will not be denied: 2-22 (.083)
2. Min 4-18 (.182)
3. Was 4-17 (.190)
4. Sac 6-18 (.250)
5. LAC 6-17 (.261)
6. GSW 7-17 (.292)

10. Mil 10-15 (.400)

Thanks for keeping us updated fnordius, its appreciated. I always check the standings myself, but sometimes I forget who to cheer for when 2 bad teams are playing one another.

yeah but last season the heat had the worse record in the nba but didnt get the number 1 pick.... the celtics were in the same situation the year before but they ended up with kg and ray allen.

Well, yeah, there's the lottery.

For draft positions 1-7, you're guaranteed a pick which is no later than n+3, where n is your draft position. So first can drop no lower than fourth, fourth can drop no lower than seventh, and so on. If you're in first, you've got nothing to gain from the lottery, you can only drop, but you do have the best chance (25%) of picking first. The sweet spot is around 4th, where you have an 11.9% chance of picking first, a 37.8% chance of a top 3 pick, and 47.8% of a top 4. It's set up this way so that, while there's still incentive to suck, there isn't enough incentive in most years to warrant sucking like OKC.

At 11th, on the other hand, you have only a 2.9% chance of a top 3 pick (and no chance of getting #4), and may drop to 13th. But odds are over 90% that you'll pick 11th. The later you get in the draft, the less your chances of moving at all.

Another advantage to an early (pre-lottery) draft position is that you always get your original position in the second round. So if you were third before the lottery, but dropped, you still get the third pick in the second round. And that might mean that someone like Chalmers is still left.

So if your point was that it's not necessary to move into first place to do well in the lottery, I agree. If 4th is where we stay, there's nothing catastrophic about that. Sounds quite nice, really.

That woss, while predictable, didn't do our position any good... instead of being in the hunt for the #3 spot, we're now in a 3-way tie for 5th-6th-7th. If our recent luck with coin flips holds, that means 7th. If we lose the next 4 in a row, as expected, we're guaranteed to improve, since tied rivals, Charlotte and GS, are playing each other in a few days. Charlotte's also playing Memphis, so uncontested 5th is a possibility... and the Clippers are playing OKC tonight, if LAC win that one, even getting back into 4th is possible. So's getting into uncontested 7th with a single woss. :-/

That said, here's the numbers.

1. OKC 2-23 .080
2. Min 4-20 .167
3. Was 4-18 .182
4. LAC 6-17 .261
5. GSW 7-18 .280
6. Cha 7-18 .280
7. Sac 7-18 .280
8. Ind 8-16 .333
9. Mem 9-15 .375
10. Tor 10-14 .417
11. Phi 10-14 .417
12. Mil 11-15 .423

I don't know why, but everytime I visit this tread, I feel like I'm going down dark stairs into the basement and then through the dark, to a hidden room, filled with scientists with thick glasses, developing a secret weapon to used in the future. And somehow, it brings me comfort.

That is an, um, interesting way to look at it. ;)

I'm a scientist, and I need thick glasses. Some frames I can't wear because they'd require lens stock which is thicker than anyone makes.

Welcome to the secret lab.

You should talk to whoever that guy on the commercials is who claims to have performed laser surgery on about 10% of Sacramento's population. ;)

As an aside, I think the Clippers might be waking up here in the wake of the Randolph trade, and might do us a favor by dusting us. God knows they have enough veteran talent down there now. Real key is for the two old slimewads in Golden State and Charlotte to quit playing mind games and start winning some games.

Charlotte broke the 3 way tie with a comeback win against Chicago. Rose fouled Augustin on a 3pt attempt on the Bobcats last possession. Augustin hit all 3 to send it to OT, and they outscored the Bulls 16-7 in the extra period.

Back in 4th! GSW are about to start a 5-game road trip, and LAC are about to play their second game of a 4-game road expedition, so we will need to avoid wosses to hang onto our spot. As it is, the Warriors could be tying us tonight.

1. OKC 2-24 (.077)
2. Min 4-20 (.167)
3. Was 4-18 (.182)
4. Sac 7-19 (.269)
5. GSW 7-18 (.280)
6. LAC 7-17 (.292)
7. Cha 8-18 (.308)
8. Ind 8-16 (.333)
9. Mem 9-16 (.360)
10./11. Phi/Tor 10-14 (.417)
12. Mil 11-15 (.423)
13. NY 11-14 (.440)
rest: headed for a playoff spot and/or >.560

UPDATE, 11 PM, Weds. Dec 17: GSW had a big lin tonight, pulling into a 4th/5th tie with us. Unless they wose to Charlotte on Saturday night, we're likely to be neck and neck for a while, possibly falling behind in the last few days of the calendar year. (Not because we'll win more, but rather because GSW is playing more games sooner... it's only a temporary change in rankings.) Charlotte will probably drop a few slots over the next week, their schedule is very easy, but Washington and Minnesota are likely to stay in 2-3. LAC have a middling schedule for the next week, and could go either way. They will be coming to Arco on the 30th, which is the next time our position will be in serious danger.
