Draft position thread

So I'm starting it early this year, what else is there to do?

Current standing: 6th, due to some nefarious and unexpected lins. How, oh HOW, could Memphis have lost to OKC?
&@^*#&@!!!

Note that this year we are again seeing a big split forming between the have and have-not teams, but this year the West is weaker, and we are clearly in the have-nots (so far) instead of stuck in the middle.

1st: OKC (2-16, .111)
2nd: Washington (2-12, .143)
3rd: LAC (3-13, .188)
4th: Memphis (4-13, .235)
5th: Minnesota (4-12, .250)
6th: Sacramento (5-14, .263)
7th: Golden State (5-13, .278)
8th: Charlotte (6-11, .353)
9th: Milwaukee (7-12, .368)
10th: Indiana (6-10, .375)
11th: Philadelphia (7-10, .412)
12th: Chicago (8-9, .471)
13+: .500 and better teams we don't have to worry about

What other draft slots do Kings have for 09? Atlanta from Bibby trade? is that an 09 1st rounder?

What others?

I think we got a crappy 2nd round pick in that Bibby trade, along with the other garbage (Sheldon and Johnson). How the hell did we get hosed that bad? We should have received more for Bibby.

Also, this draft thread is pointless because this will be the year that the Kings get the #1 pick and there won't be a clear cut #1 pick (i.e. Pervis Ellison)

Well, for better or worse, the Bibby trade gave us room under the luxury tax threshold to give Beno the MLE. So you have to consider that a net result.

ehh, I wouldnt be too sure about that. The college season has just started.

Ps. I really like Jennings and DeRozan .. I think going for a PG should be a no brainer .. DeRozan would be the exeption for me

The only second round pick that I recall Petrie ever making and keeping was Anthony Johnson. For some reason he can pick at the bottom of the first round and do fine, but anywhere in the second and his picks are doomed.

Our acquired picks might not be all that great, since Atlanta's currently in line for 22nd, and Houston for 21st.

P.S. - Due to tonight's glorious lin, we're now tied 5th/6th with Minnesota at .250.

We do not get Atlanta's 22nd pick (1st rounder)..it's only a 2nd round pick, which, like the previous poster said, is usually a throw away pick for GP. :(

We do not get Atlanta's second round pick this year, either. We got it last year. His name was Sean Singletary.

Not sure, but I believe that Petrie drafted Michael Smith and Funderburke, both second round picks in the same draft. Lets also not forget the great Jabari Smith, who did stay with us for one season.

I'm not sure either, I remember that Petrie arrived in '94, and that those two were drafted in June '94, but did Petrie arrive before or after June?

Ah, more than one season. 137 glorious minutes of PT over the course of 2 years before we let him go... and then a third, equally riveting season a while later. How could I have forgotten him? Must be getting senile.

I can't help but think about the game against the Twolves when Peja went to the line for 2, missed the first one, then Flip realized he could pick whoever he wanted to shoot them so he chose Jabari, only to see Jabari sink em both. Anyone else remember that game? Was that in the playoffs?

Don't forget Jerome James either. Actually, he had a couple of mildly useful seasons as a backup for Seattle, before riding one good series against an injured Brad Miller and 6'9'' Brian Skinner to a predictably awful contract.

99% sure Petrie drafted Tyus Edney too. He was mildly useful as well.

We have our first and second round picks this year and Houston's first round pick this year. That's it. Everything else has already happened. Two first round picks and a high second round pick is better than we've had in a long time though.

I remember that. I loved it! :D I do think it was the playoffs. (Do not trust my memory on that, tho.)

Oh I remember this game. I was there. It was I believe either Game 4 or 5 against the Timberwolves in the playoffs. Same one where KG decided that his good ol' teammate Anthony Peeler decided an elbow in his face was necessary for Peeler to get suspended. Ol' Flippy decided to try and pull a fast one. Jabari was the man... it was like the only thing he did that game.

It was pretty much the only thing he did his whole career

I didn't forget him, but we didn't keep him, either. The famous garbage bag.

Yeah.

Okay, so AJ was merely the pinnacle of Geoff's second round picks. There were a few others that weren't waived... just none in more than a decade.

Now, back to draft position...

Dammit, all the competition is LINNING tonight!

1. OKC (2-17, .105)
2. LAC (3-14, .176)
3. Was (3-13, .188)
4. Mem (4-14, .222)
5. Minn (4-13, .235)
6. Sac (5-15, .250)
7. GSW (5-13, .278)
8. Milw (7-12, .368)
9. Char (7-11, .389)
10. Ind (7-10, .412)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Chicago slotted to draft sixth last year prior to the lottery? Sixth might not be a bad place to finish?

I think they had the 9th slot. The Clippers had the 6th. Anyway if we're gonna miss the playoffs then I'd prefer having one of the worst records. The worst team is guaranteed to have a top 4 pick, and extremely likely to have a top 3

I think Chicago was 8th last year, but Portland was 6th two years ago when they got the #1 for Oden.

It's a great place to finish. But if you look at our December and January schedule we'll be "competing" for close to .200. And if that's the case, It sure should incentivize Petrie even more to dump Miller and Salmons by the Feb trade deadline (I hope). I think we have a very good shot at the top 5, barring Petrie making a trade for some more mediocre vets to keep us "respectable".

Forecast for Sunday, 7 Dec. 2008
I'm assuming that, in all cases, the teams with better records will beat the teams with worse records. In case of ties, I assume that the home team wins.

1. OKC 2-19 .095
2. LAC 3-17 .150
3. Was 3-15 .167
4. Sac 5-17 .227
5. Mem 5-15 .250
6. GSW 5-15 .250
7. Min 5-14 .263
8. Ind 7-13 .350
9. Char 7-13 .350
10. Milw 9-13 .409

Looking good!

Friday night update: As expected, we've now risen to 5th. A lin over Denver, combined with Minny beating the Clippers tomorrow, and 4th place will be ours.

Well, the Bobcats and Thunder both lost, but the good news is that Memphis beat the Rockets (both good for us since we own Houston's 1st) and the Warriors beat the Thunder.

My two top picks. If we for some odd chance got one of the top picks then I wouldn't mind trading down to get one of those players if they are projected lower and we could get something nice from it.

Okay, first the bad news... we just went from .238 to .272.

The good news, aside from beating the Lakers for the first time in 2 years, preventing a franchise record home losing streak, and so on, is that it didn't change our position, we were in good enough shape before that we're still #5. Minnesota found a way to choke to the Clippers, so we never made it to #4. Then again, that makes the #2 spot seem attainable...

1. OKC: 2-20 (.091)
2. LAC: 4-17 (.190)
3. Min: 4-16 (.200)
4. Was: 4-15 (.211)
5. Sac: 6-16 (.273)
6. GSW: 6-15 (.286)
7. Mem: 6-15 (.286)
8. Cha: 7-14 (.333)
9. Ind: 7-13 (.350)
10.Mil: 9-14 (.391)

The last playoff spot in the West is currently held by a .591 team, with a .550 team at #9, so we can keep on forgetting about the post-season.

In closing, I'll just say...

GO PINGS!!!
(But not during Lakers games!)
