Draft flexibility

I'm not sure if this is worth it's own thread, but I figure it's better than hijacking another thread.

Although I'm sad to see Mike go, this really wasn't a bad trade. We may not have got face value back, but how would that be possible with such a large contract? Essentially, we cut Mikes contract in half (less than half). I assume Lue, AJ and Wright will no be re-signed. Maybe one of the PGs but that's it.
We traded big for small. Shelden is not proven by a long shot, but he is talented. Never be a star, but he can be an important player on a good team. It can never hurt to accumulate young talent.

Anyway, my main point is this. As well as getting a young guy in return, we get a 2nd round pick. This is a deep draft, and players fall every year. We are in a good position this year with a lottery pick and two second rounders. I think this gives us added flexibilty (not the KT kind of flexibilty ) come draft night. We could package any of our young guys with with our lottery pick to move up, we could trade our two 2nd rounders for another first, or we could simply trade a combination of picks alone to trade up.

I may be looking too far into it, but I think this is something Geoff had in mind when doing this trade. He may not be the best GM in the L, but he's a saavy player. He's cute, and he knows what he's doing. He may well be looking forward to draft night. Either way, I'm excited by all the possibilties ahead of us this June. Even if we don't move any picks, we could easily land a good player and a guy or two with potential.

Good points, especially about Geoff being a good player; and cute. I agree that this year's draft is going to be exciting. I won't go as far as to say he's planning to trade up. Draft flexibility is going to be hard to acheive unless we see those balls drop in the kings favor. I foresee the Kings drafting euro-talent, because euro-talents do not understand the words "Big-market". I do like the depth of the 2k8 draft, but it seems to be clear that if we dont get in the top-three....it's not going to be pretty for the kings anytime soon.

I've seen Bayless only once and Rose numerous times, but I would definitely take Rose for his size and ability to distribute/control the pace of a game. Bayless is more of a SG IMO. Rose is as pure a PG as they come.

The four new players are all backups -- should not be much of a ripple. Now if we make another move...

Far bigger issue down the stretch is that by the end of next week we will have used up all of our beat-up-a-wuss games against the East and every singel game we play in the final two months of the season will be against teams from the West, against whom we're 10-19 this season (we are 13-9 vs. the East)

Draftexpress has Rose and Bayless at #2 and #3. We will have #12, and (unless one or more are traded away in a Ron deal) the 11th and 12th picks of the second round. That gives us a 2.5% chance at one of the top 3 picks, a 3.9% chance of dropping to #13, and a 93.6% chance of picking at #12. Even if we have a 29-win season, we're looking at no earlier than the #10 spot, which means a 6.4% chance of an early pick, an 84.6% chance of #10, and an 8.9% chance of going 11th or 12th.

So unless you're the sort of person who uses the rent money to buy lottery tickets every month, and wins every month, or unless you expect to have some of Stern's relatives held hostage on lottery night, you might want to lower your expectations a bit. The current system has been in place since 1994, and, to the best of my recall, no team #10 or later has gotten a top 3 pick during that time.

i'd like to see the kings roll the dice in the second round and pick foreign players. let them develop and then bring them over when we are ready to challenge for playoff spot. san antonio, detroit and portland have been doing this successfully. this will create a farm system for the kings. the players won't be playing against inferior (maybe thats a harsh word) nbdl players or rotting on the bench behind the likes of mikki moore, kenny thomas, ron ron. this will allow the young players to gain some real game time experience against top level competition.

i think we will finish alot worse then 12th pick. if we trade artest only john and cisco play great d, with mikki. 12th is our projected pick. maybe we are like minn last year and get the seventh. then personally i take batum.

Well, it's impossible for us to get the #7 pick unless we are in the #10 or lower slot. Assuming that most teams keep playing about like they have, to get into the #10 slot means winning less than 29 games. We've already won 23, and have 31 left to go, so we'd need to go 5-26 (16.1%) from here on out. So if we have suddenly turned worse than Miami, then it's a maybe. But AJ isn't a huge downgrade from Bibby, so that's not going to do it. Even if we traded Ron for some horrible scrub, Theus would have to give that scrub Ron's minutes, which isn't going to happen, they'd be going to Salmons and Cisco.

So I think if you're looking at picks earlier than #11, you're in for a major disappointment.

I was thinking about this guy...but ill have to pass. I would like to take a player who weighs more than me. just my opinion. I also pass on Thabeet. I like Dorsey from Memphis, and Dozier. I also think its time for the reincarnation of Larry Bird. Just a thought.
