I still believe that the Kings might have Robinson slotted for the SF spot down the road, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him log some time there this coming season on occasion. In the video interview with Alex English, he was asked about Robinson's position on the team, and he said he thinks he could play SF, PF and even center in the right circumstance.
Do you happen to have a link to the Alex English video? I can find his Day 2 video, but he doesn't make that statement in the 4.5 minute video that I'm finding.
As to TRob playing the SF position....
You know that it was that one play during the NC State game, where he got the steal, took it down to the other end and finished which really, really impressed me.
I felt that for a guy that size his speed and quickness based solely on that play were mind-blowing.
I think that he could play defense against a good majority of SFs, and could even be the best defender we have against big SFs like Carmelo and LBJ. The issue of course would be how he would fit on the offensive end.
I mean from a defensive perspective can you imagine a line-up of TRob, Whiteside, & Cousins?
That's a monster line-up that could work defensively.
Then if you wanted to really tighten the screws defensively, you put out Tyreke and TWill at the guard spots. Of course, there's basically no 3pt threat in that line-up, so the opposing defense will be able to squeeze the floor more and make it far more difficult for both dribble-drive, post play (due to easier defensive double teams/recovery), and getting good passing lanes.
So even if you have JT/Whiteside/Cousins able to hit the open mid-range shot at 15-18ft, if you play Robinson at the SF, then you need to have at least one of your guards be a good 3pt threat, and you'd be better off having both guards being a 3pt threat.
If you don't have any 3pt threats on the floor, it really makes it easier for the opposing defense, and you might lose on offense what you're gaining on defense...unless the plan is to continually dump the ball down low to Cousins/Robinson. But then it would be easier for the defense to recover on the double-team because your shooters are only 18ft out instead of 22-24ft behind the 3pt line.
Anyway, I'm definitely all for trying TRob at SF on defense, but my fear is that in order to compensate for the lack of 3pt shooting we'd trot out a guard line-up of IT/Thornton, Jimmer/Thornton, or IT/Jimmer...which brings the team defense down a bit and you might wind up losing the defense that you gain from having Robinson at the SF position.
It will be interesting to see if we see TRob playing SF at all during summer league.
