Donte Greene

Go to the "archive" link in the Houston game, and you can watch his whole 40 point performance.

I missed a couple of Houston games, and I just watched them tonight.. He's definitely got Rashard Lewis talent, and the Kings should play him at SF (unlike the magic playing Lewis at PF) where he belongs. This can only be a good thing for the Kings. So good I removed the "fire Petrie" in my sig ;)

He's definitely a nice addition to our platoon of young guys. He's got a lot of big questions about his game, but that's to be expected of high risk guys like him. Right now, his biggest fault seems to be shot selection, or lack thereof. Though, he's only 20 years old, so he's got a lot of time to grow. All in all, a solid pickup, and with so much potential wrapped up in him, Hawes, and Thompson, there's a good chance that one of them will turn out to be something special. The future is starting to look a lot brighter.

That fade away from the baseline was pretty.

The reason Donte slipped so far was because he played a very immature and selfish game last year -- taking half of his shots from 3pt land, and just chucking up garbage with no conscience, not trying on defense, and just generally being a knucklehead. Its why the Tim Thomas comparisons might be the most apt for the time being. But he's certainly got amazing potenital if we can reach him and get him to settle down and do the things it takes to win. And the most encouraging thing? He's 19. That is the advantage of nabbing really young guys -- have so much room to grow. If he's a 23 yr old knucklehead, that just might be who he is. But at 19 many of us were less than focused, and so now you just wait on the maturity and see if he gets a hold of his considerable gifts.

Can't complain about getting Donte, I think essentially 2 first round picks for Ron is pretty good value. 1 issue with Donte is I don't think he had an assist throughout the Summer League although I could be wrong. He is really selfish, hopefully he grows up a little.

Whether or not achieving his potential and learning what it means to play as a team happens for him will be another measure of Theus as a coach. I'm cautiously optimistic.

Absolutley, this is almost an extension of the Noah conversation we had going yesterday. Donte is a fantastic risk to take. He has lottery talent and with a "safe" pick already in here in Thompson, this is a great gamble. Hopefully Green will take nearly slipping out of the first round (after being initially projected as a lottery pick) and being traded twice before ever playing a NBA game as motivation. Some of these guys get coddled from the time they are young because they are a "special talent" and getting this type of harsh slap-in-the-face can be a great motivating factor.

The funny thing is, we know Theus and he will get on Green and be harsh and tough. It will be interesting to see how Green responds to this and if it motivates him or he folds and rebels.

You are right too that if Green doesn't respond to it, if Theus has another dimension to his coaching or if he is a proverbial "one trick pony" and dismisses Green as a lost cause if he does not respond to Theus' primary style of motivation.

I know it's probably paranoia, but I'll withhold the welcoming wagon until Aug. 14th ...

With "the Artest formerly known as a King," too much can happen in the meantime..

I'm glad to read the Greene is someone who the Kings were specifically impressed with and interest in prior to the draft. So, he's a player we targeted rather than just taking whoever Houston happened to have to spare.

Looking good here.

I don't need to watch these clips. I saw this guy play a few times during LVSL and let me tell you, this guy has game.

For a 6'10" guy, he has great mobility and fluidity up and down the court. He is very aggressive. Rashard Lewis comparison is a good one....

But to tell you the truth the guy he reminded me of when I watched him play was TRACY McGRADY. Now of course his game is nowhere near as polished and refined as T-Mac, but he has this type of skill set.

SUPER aggressive, really good balance, uses both hands, fills the lane, faces up his man and attacks, will bring a set of skills to our team we don't have. I see him really complementing JT's game.

I don't think we would have pulled the trigger on this deal if he did not destroy like he did in LVSL. Just as we would not have signed Bobby Brown had he not excelled as he did. The risk to the deal is LVSL is misleading in terms of translating to real NBA competition, but I think its fair to extrapolate and draw some pretty reliable conclusions. (i.e. Sean Singletary is not NBA ready.)

This deal is a winner in terms of cap space, future salary obligation, and potential talent. And Ron-Bill is not going to LA which is another plus.

I watched him play a lot last year Bricky, and to degree your right. As I said in another post, he played pretty darn well the first half of the year. But if you watched his team play, they were all selfish, and I think he just got caught up in the thought concept that if I don't shoot it, when I get it, I'll never get it back again.

In baseball they have a term called a five tool player. Without going into that, one could say the Greene is Basketballs equivalent of a five tool player. Now all he has to do is work on his game and he may become a special player. But your right, he's young, and I know when I was his age I made a lot of stupid mistakes. Lets hope that he's smarter than I was.

I think it should also be pointed out that the Kings worked him out twice before the draft. So they had interest in him prior to the summer league.

Also, I never heard anything bad about Greene in the sense of something that would have made him drop in the draft. I think he slid because a couple of the teams that were interested in him higher up, such as the Warriors, were able to get a player that maybe they didn't think would be there. Also a lot of bigs were in the draft along with some talented pt guards.

I think most GM's thought he was a talented player, and it was just the luck of the draw in his case. It happens every year, and occasionaly, the team that ends up with that player gets lucky. Lets hope so in our case.

Before the draft I wasn't a big fan of Greene's at all, but after seeing him play in Summer League he really impressed me and looked really good. Let's hope he can keep that momentum going with the Kings this year.

He'll be fine as long as he isn't just a tool.

Where did you read that at? I would like to read that article. I's like to see what Theus and GP say about him.

In the early going before he started to slip, I am pretty sure I remember some of the mocks having him going to us there, but that's just the mocks.

Makes sense anyway though -- the kid has many of the attributes we always focus on.

I think he just means that we worked him out twice.

There were also a few general statements that our staff was impressed by him and some mock drafts like Ford's that noted the Kings were "big fans" of him, but I don't remember seeing any specific direct quotes from our people.

He averaged 1 assist a game.

If they could re-do the draft now after the summer league, i wonder how high Greene would have went? in the teen range probably is my guess...what do you guys think?

Thats what I like right there...

Definitely a lot higher then he ended up going. He was one of the most impressive players at the Summer League.

I cant find it now, but it was from the ESPN.com article when the news first broke about Donte Greene being involved in the trade. It said the Kings really liked him when he worked out in Sacramento and should fit well in Theus' system.
